I was tossing up between this and a Marshall code, and after reading reviews decided to go with the katana. I was mostly drawn to the amps 0.5w setting, allowing me too shape tones at a 'bedroom' volume. I like high gain sounds, as I play metal, and at low volumes the amp sounded tinny, treble and lifeless. I was really disappointed. I downloaded patches, watched tutorials and tweaked and tweaked but no matter what I did the amp sounded like a cheap practice amp.I took the amp to a rehearsal studio (with my phone and tone studio app in hand) where I could let it rip and switched it to 50w mode on about 4. After some tweaking in the app, using both eq's (you can simultaneously run a ten band and parametric eq), running a metal zone into the brown amp it was like a cross between a 5150 and a jcm2000; tight, aggressive with plenty of guts. This amp can easily handle classic and modern metal/punk.I paid for and downloaded some of the juca nery tones and am of the opinion that he creates them using the line out into a DAW, as they sounded terrible to me through a loud amp. The line out tones sound OK, and watching his videos they can be manipulated using IRs and other plug ins which makes this thing far more versatile than I first expected.I am genuinely happy with this amp and will use it for years to come. I know it will keep up in band situations and has a enough clarity and headroom to cut through the mix.

I have had this amp for a few months now, and every time I plug in and play I am blown away. The versatility out of the box is a nice feature, but once you get it set up with Tone Studio the possibilities are nearly endless. The tone is very malleable and has that unmistakable tube punch when you get things dialed-in. The two-speaker setup really helps move lots of air and capture all the right nuances. And when I say this thing can move a lot of air, I mean it. It is LOUD. At home I practice at .5 Watts, and at just half a Watt it's louder than any little 1-3 Watt practice amp I've ever encountered by a long shot. At the 50 Watt setting it's loud enough to annoy your neighbors. And at 100 Watts... you better be wearing hearing protection. BUT, even at the lowest power setting you can still get that full amp tone.I have been burned in the past by music gear purchases, and I really wasn't expecting much when ordering this amp. But it has blown past my expectations in every possible way and I highly recommend it to anyone even slightly interested. There is currently nothing that compares at this price point.I also have to recommend the Boss GA-FC foot controller; it really opens up the performance side of the amp letting you switch between banks and toggling individual effects. I was expecting to start re-building a pedalboard to go with this amp, but as of right now I'm perfectly content having everything in-the-box because of how great it sounds and how easy it is to use. I can't recommend it enough.

I've owned multiple amps over the years; Marshall, Mesa Boogie, etc. and the Katana is, by far, my favorite all-round amp. It can go from sparkly clean to aggressive metal to crazy effects without batting an eyelash. What I like most is that you can just plug it in and start playing right out of the box. Sometimes you just want to plug in and play without getting complicated with an editor and you can totally do just that! That being said, I do recommend using the editor to get access to all the Boss effects and for tweaking; it is truly easy to use! Also, the wattage is measured in-comparison to tube amps, so it is PLENTY loud. I don't really gig anymore, so I'm using it mostly for practice and recording, so I'm usually only using the 50-Watt setting and that is ... MoreI've owned multiple amps over the years; Marshall, Mesa Boogie, etc. and the Katana is, by far, my favorite all-round amp. Prior to this, I had the original 100-Watt 1x12 version, so I knew what I was getting into and glad I upgraded. Boss made some quality of life changes that were very welcomed, mainly the dual concentric pots for the effects section (this has made tweaking so much easier).I'd recommend this to everyone regardless of style of music you play. It's THAT good.

After watching and reading about the Katana on Youtube and other web sites, there were hardly any bad reviews on this amp. I was able to get really cool sounds very easily. If you have something against transistor based amps, you should look again and find out for yourself before you bash the Katana. Boss has gotten it right on this amp and the technology is only going to get better. The amp is very intuitive to use right out of the box. You don't have to go and use their software if you don't want to. I used it for recording and a few gigs and I have total confidence in the amp. The only gripe I have is that it doesn't have an extention speaker out. I have the 2X12 100 watt version and it would of been nice to have an extention speaker to augment the Katana. I wonder why...If anyone has any info on that, I would certainly like to hear from you. But overall I rate the Katana an A-.
The 100 212 is an absolute beast. You can spend hours trying to dial in your own tone, download pro lives and do all in between. Every effect, modulation, etc that you may want from BOSS can be found in the Boss Tone Studio. I have gigged a lot with this amp and there has never been a situation where I have not had enough wattage. This thing can blow your head off or be used in the basement with headphones if you need to hide away. It doesn't not completely provide the saturation of a tube amp but you can do a ton of stuff w the Katana and it is great value for the money.
Overall:If your looking for a great amp that can accomplish many roles then this is your go to. I own a Marshall tube amp as well as this one and the sound from it is comparable. It may not be perfect for getting the tube amp sound, but it will come close. The effects built in is a nice feature if you dont want to tote a pedal board, but it handles pedals very well on the clean channel, and with 100 watts of power driving the 2x12" speakers it is loud, loud, loud. Highly recommend.
Excellent amp. Up until now, I have been using a Katana 50 which I like a lot, so when I wanted more volume for gigging I chose the 100 twin and am very pleased with it. I think the tones are great straight out of the box, but can be fantastic with a bit of tweaking. If you want really classic tones I think it it's important to be subtle with the effects otherwise it's easy to spoil the sound and make it sound digital. Crank the effects only when you actually want/need them. The twin cabinet really sounds rich.
Overall:These are absolutely great amps, I had bought the KTN 50 a couple months ago and loved it. My friends all kept asking if I'd be interested in selling it. I thought about it a bit and ended up selling it for almost what I paid for it. I used that as my first payment on upgrading to the Mk2 2x12. I've had that amp a couple weeks now and just ordered a second one to use the new stereo damping feature. Loudest 2x12 amp I've ever heard in a combo, and this amp modeling stuff has come a long way in the last 20 years. If you are new to the katana series, I can say that they are worth every penny, and if you are new to zZounds they are a great company. This no hassle credit they offer is the best thing I've seen a company do for musicians. I have had the 50 watt for several months which is a great amp, but decided I wanted more foot switching options provided by the GA-FC controller. I figured if I was to buy the 100 watt it might as well be a 2X12. The 100 2X12 sounds awesome. And it is really loud to play at home even on the .5 watt setting. I'm tired of messing with tube amps and effect pedals so the Boss Katana series is just what I need. I have not dived in to the software and deep settings on either amp yet. These are apparently had to get. SAM Ash had it on backorder from Boss. The web and phone support at SAM Ash is great. I've owned and own a number of tube amps. I've also tried EVERY solid state. Some do some things well while not so good in other areas. Most do cleans well but they struggle on good distortion tones. Either too fizzy or flabby. This does it all. Imo it doesn't replace tube amps, but comes closer than anything else. A GREAT practice amp. Once again for the money nothing touches it. (including Peavey,Catalyst, Blackstar and the rest including Fender). When I read the review on how the tone isn't good, I'll put money it was due to not spending time with it and understanding how to dial it in.
