This is my second unit. I believed the first was defective. I use pre-ground coffee (1-2 weeks old) in the dual wall filter. Seems impossible to get repeatable results. Better results when 18g and finer grounds are used. But machine is unforgiving. 'Air' seeps into the extractions occassionally (large foam bubbles). Doesn't seem to be an issue with signle wall. Support is very friendly and helpful. But I question the machine. I may break down and get a grinder.

Other than the operational buttons & dial, you are met with solid stainless steal. The light is not a feature of this model, so the water tank is always dark & the water level very difficult to see.Filling the coffee filter is a simple as always & I really like that the tamper is magnetically built in. The portafilter is a little stiff during insertion into the machine but no doubt that will loosen up a little over time.If you have fingernails & don’t have thumbs of steel, good luck getting the filters out of the portafilter when you are finished. The spring mechanism that keeps them tightly in position does it’s job much too well…Getting to the other accessories in the internal basket is interesting…. It is all the way in the back & has to catch on the water tray to pull out. Otherwise you’re digging around with the your fingers. Alternatively the basket can pull forward unnecessarily when all you want to do is clean out the water tray…The steamer nozzle is a single piece making it harder to clean, whereas my older model was a 2 piece nozzle that I could slide off easily for cleaning.Getting the thick foam I was used too has not yet been achieved with this new model. I’ve had the machine now for over 3 months. Irrespective of the type of milk I used I could get a decent amount of foam before. My older model (which I would have repurchased if I could) had an air hole at both the bottom & the top of the steamer nozzle allowing for greater airflow & making foam a breeze. This model has only 1 hole & I have to really really work at getting a light foam after much bobbing up & down barista style of the milk jug…By the time you go to turn off the steam, the dial has heated up & gets very stiff due to the expansion of the plastic. Again making the overall quality feel cheap.Overall I’m making it work. I’ve past the return date but I will be waiting for the next incarnation of Breville coffee machines before buying another…

Exelent "gateway" espresso machine!!

I've had my Duo-Temp since it was first released, and my experience has been incredible. When I first purchased my espresso machine, I was a bit novice, and this machine was everything you could ever want to make delicious drinks. Now after some time has passed, I'll probably move over to the Dual Boiler, but not because this Duo-Temp machine is not awesome, more so because I want bigger and better features. The Duo-Temp can do anything you need it to do and comes at a great price. Don't overlook the simplicity, it really is an incredible machine. My main drink of choice is typically either a cafe mocha, or simple shots of espresso to give me a kick in the morning. I have a routine when I make a drink, I always clean my machine thoroughly to make sure its going to work perfect the next time I need it. It hasn't failed me.Breville makes an incredible kitchen appliance, we have so much Breville in our home you'd think we were brand ambassadors... LOL ...but there's a reason we have so many of their devices. They just work, and work well.

Give the fancy ones a miss - get this great machine

I expected this to be much the same as my 2010 version (which was great), but the coffee is so much better now. I love this machine. It makes great tasting coffee. It doesn’t take up too much space on the bench top and the functions are simple and easy to operate. Why pay more? Two tricks: double-wall 2 cup of fine ground coffee runs 60 ml of water and stops. You can do it again to produce a bigger volume of coffee without diluting the taste. Second - and this was just my experience - the wand screamed in the milk against the metal milk jug causing ear pain for 20 minutes & I was worried about hearing loss. I figured out this - expel the initial air/dribble from the wand onto the tray first, turn steam off, immediately insert into milk and turn on again. If you have the wand at the right height you won’t get screaming. If in doubt, just shove into the milk to stop the squeal, then adjust. You will get the hang of it in no time and it will be a breeze.Price, coffee quality, ease of use and cleaning - all joy, no regrets. (Also, the simpler the machine, the less to go wrong.)

I attribute this to the duo temp feature, since that is the main difference from the previous Breville model.I use pre ground coffee, so the Duo-Temp Pro was definitely the right Breville model for me. More expensive models include a grinder and more settings. In general, I can adjust the amount of coffee in the brew basket, or add more milk or sugar, so fine tuning of settings is not a requirement for me. Also I found I can blend 2 kinds of coffee to improve the tastewhen I get a new brand coffee where I do not like the result. These days I use Brazillian dark roast coffee or Starbucks Sumatra Decaf with the single shot pressurized brew basket, and always I like the coffee. Generally I make latte drinks rather than espresso shots. The machine is sturdy, and easy to clean. I suggest to clean and dry the drip tray after every use, and also I remove the brew basket each day and clean it separately.I would definitely go with Breville in the future for my next machine.

Great espresso machine for the price!

I love my new Duo-Temp Pro. It consistently makes very good espresso. (I currently use pre-ground coffee and it still tastes wonderful.) It's a well-built and sturdy machine with mostly stainless steel parts. I have been using it to make a latte every morning for several weeks. My only complaints are that I can't fit a larger milk pitcher under the steam wand (I must use the supplied somewhat small milk pitcher; there's just not enough height to fit a larger pitcher) and the filter basket won't come out of the porta-filter without prying it out with a screwdriver. I have become accustomed to these minor quirks; I keep a screwdriver in the drawer below my machine for routine use. If not for these two issues I would rate this espresso machine with 5 stars - I really ... MoreI love my new Duo-Temp Pro. It consistently makes very good espresso. Off in about 10 mins.Packaging ~ So nice that you'd think there's jewelry inside. Makes a nice gift.Directions~ Nice touch to have directions on the machine and pop up reminders for maintenance and emptying the water collection tray etc.Accessories ~ Love that it comes with extra filters and metal cup for milk frothing.Tall enough~ I was so annoyed with one of my previous brewers that there wasn't enough space to fit a normal coffee cup underneath the portafilter.. this has space!CONS;All the plastic.. Yes there's some stainless but a lot of plastic or VERY thin metal. The writing wont last; On previous Breville brewers the writing next to thedials wore off and I wish they'd have changed it to somethingsuper durable. Looks the same to me..Water Vessel ~ I like that it seals well but you can NOT see the water level line. It's hardto know, since water is used for espresso, purging and frothingfeatures, how much water is left. Unfortunately you have to open it tolook as the plastic is too dark. I also wonder if theplastic water vessel is safe plastic.Noisy ~ Granted it doesn't take long to make a shot but that pumping noise isannoying. The Bambino was silent, but not this machine.Frother~ When you first turn on the frother, water comesout , then after a minute the steam. Not sure why the water...Over all it's a decent machine and their customer service is stellar. Would be nice to know the exact time to brew a double shot.Bambino machine was very fast and turned itself off immediately after the shot was dispensed. Needs more metal and insulation to quiet it down.

I really want to switch back to older machine. They just made this one fancier to sell it at a higher price.

We bought this as a replacement for a previous version of the same model which, after 10 years, stopped working and is no longer supported by Breville (the local small appliance repair shop couldn't repair it since Breville no longer supplies the required parts). When I picked up the box, I assumed I had bought the wrong item. This was so much lighter than the original machine. Upon opening the box, I understood why. The old machine was solid metal. This one is largely made of plastic. This one is made of plastic, obviously doesn't warm anything. The original machine had a very large water reservoir accessed from the front of the machine, making it very easy to access and to verify the water level. The reservoir on the new one is much smaller (ie: more frequent refills) and at the back of the machine, making it less easily accessible and more cumbersome to fill. But what about the coffee? This machine produces much less crema and definitely less froth than the old one, using the exact same grinds.Overall, we are very disappointed with this machine.
