I replaced my Isomac Tea with an Oracle! Read my verdict!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] OK. I’m a convert. After 10 years as an Isomac Tea E61 home espresso machine owner, I took the leap and purchased the Breville Oracle. It’s quite a leap - the Isomac was a totally manual machine with a separate grinder. Every coffee was subject to coffee blend, grind, tamp, temperature, extraction rate and time, steam intensity and ability to texture. I’m not bragging, but I pretty much got it down over the years. But it wasn’t something most people could walk up to and operate in a way that would deliver a great coffee without some level of skill. In the 10 years since I purchased the Isomac Breville have been steadily sniffing the scent of what attracts people like me to spend a couple of grand on a coffee machine. They have been building a reputation for not simply creating an appliance that makes coffee but a true coffee machine. I have to say, this machine is pretty remarkable. Not only have I found myself with a machine that replicates the sort of standard I’d expect from the Isomac, it’s incredibly easy to operate! Now I can show a friend how to use it and they are making their own coffee, grind to milk frothing, with incredible consistency.Jump onto youtube and watch any number of reviews - there are a LOT of people like me out there who are very impressed by this machine. The combination of serious build quality - dual boiler - convenience - built in grinder and automatic milk texturing - technology - auto clean, back flush reminders, adjustable settings - and result - great coffees - The Oracle has redefined what I think makes the ideal home coffee machine. The Isomac style machine is still out there as an option for those what want to dive deeper into the manual world of coffee creation, but I feel that with the range of settings on the Oracle along with the ease of use I’ve landed in a great sweet spot. Ultimately I want to make a great coffee at home and it’s all become so much straightforward. PLUS I love the tweakable long black settings - BAM! Love our Oracle

Makes great espresso and cappuccino but do not expect a worry-free machine

I entered in to my relationship with the Oracle BES980XL in December 2015. The BES980XL, however, is like an unfaithful lover; when it behaves it makes the most exquisite espresso and cappuccino. But without warning you are on your own!My first copy of the BES980XL went back under warranty after about 18 months. By 2019 the machine went back to Breville again, this time out of warranty, at a cost $500 to me. Breville sent me a new unit with a 6 month warranty. Three years later I am looking at another $500 to have the machine repaired! The machine will trip the GFCI breaker when heating up and then go back to normal for a few weeks. While turned on and sitting idle, without warning one of the solenoids will fire off like a jack hammer and won’t stop until the machine is unplugged! After an hour the machine becomes operable. Now the tamper is not working properly! I think my relationship with the Breville BES980XL is coming to an end. I have faithfully maintained both machines, cleaning and descaling them as soon as the reminder messages came on. I will be looking at other options before I hand over another $500 for an unreliable machine.

My 2nd Oracle and still loving it
12 March 2022

I've been upgrading Breville machines for about 15 years, and jumped on this one 5 years ago when it first came out.It checks all the boxes, dual boiler, consistent milk frothing, grinder and automated features that makes it easy to use. If you're picky, it allows you to adjust every setting (milk frothing, milk temperature, brew temperature, tamper force, grind grain, pre-infusing time, water force, amount, etc). After 5 years of use I had a bittersweet experience, where its brewing temperature wouldn't go above 160F, after a descaling cycle. I upgraded to the Oracle Touch (this model is/was soldout), but after experiencing issues with its touch screen I ended up returning it. My wife convinced me to call Breville to try to repair the original Oracle (I thought it would be a waste of time because the machine was out of warranty) after emailing them, Breville support offered to service it for $500 (upfront). A couple of weeks later Breville emailed me that the machine was not repairable and instead they shipped a replacement, exact same model (seems like new, but not sure).Bittersweet experience aside, the machine consistently makes awesome coffee, americanos, cappuccinos, etc. Easily beats any chain coffee house. It is an integral part of my household's morning routine, while the automated grinder and tamper fills the portal filter, I am cracking eggs, simultaneously, the automated frother foams and heats up the milk to my specified settings, while I am beating the eggs, the Oracle pours the most creamy brew, while I am cooking eggs I am enjoying a luxurious cappuccino, the routine goes on and on doing three others coffees for my wife and two daughters, 365 days of the year. In the weekends, my wife and I look forward to getting up in the morning and enjoy the coffees this machine poors. It saved us during the COVID lockdown, it is a small luxury and sets the tone for the day.

Overpriced, but makes great coffee so far.

We haven't had this machine for long so I can't give it a 5 star just yet as we are still figuring out how it works best. We've had both Brevilles and Sunbeams for last 30 years and we can see that Sunbeam's products have got worse, rather than better. It's a beautiful looking machine, in the black truffle finish, easy to wipe over. It definitely requires very fresh beans and with this, one has to then keep adjusting the grind because of weather changes. I have had to go from 11 to 9 just because a tiny bit of humidity arrived. I also think you need to make a coffee and then toss it out just to get everything warmed up properly, before you make one to drink. I also think you need to make a coffee and then toss it out just to get everything warmed up properly, before you make one to drink. We haven't gone in and changed any of the default settings, but we would probably like to get a slightly longer pour so it works better for large mugs, so will play around with this. We only ever use the 2 cup filter basket, but for a large mug (450ml) there needs to be more coffee extracted so that the ratio of milk added is balanced. But I think all of these machines are specifically set up for expresso shots anyway. I have found the auto milk texturing to work best when a jug has more milk in it, rather than less. It creates too much froth and bubble otherwise. I've tried the manual frothing option, but this machine does it better on the auto. The default temperature for milk is great and I've worked out where to put the texture for a flat white. I do love how I can walk away from this machine and let it do pretty well everything for me, but time will tell whether this machine is worth the price. I would say right now, it is overpriced by about $800 and I'd love to know why it is the price it is. I've read some horror stories about parts failing within a few weeks and shocking service by Breville, so we will see. This was a Qantas point buy and also on special, so we weren't too much out of pocket.

It was super easy to set up and it took next to no time at all. The build quality is top notch and the number of features packed into this machine is phenomenal, the more you look the more you find. The quality of espresso delivered is great and the dual boiler setup is super convenient and the steam wand in auto mode is simply brilliant and works consistently every time. I cannot get consistent results with this machine which is incredibly frustrating as that is the whole point of the machine. I will use the grinder to get a dose on one setting (18 for example) and volume of the shot will not be enough. I set the grinder one notch higher (19 for example) and the amount of ground coffee I get will be different and will cause my next shot to have way too much volume - leaving me no way to actually get the correct amount of espresso in the cup because the machine doesn't allow you to manually dose. I contacted customer support over this but was ignored. Can you get great tasting coffee out of this machine? Yes you can - I have had the occasional great shot out of the machine. However, the reason this machine is so expensive is because it is supposed to keep certain variables constant - and it cannot do that therefore I think 1 star is the only appropriate score.
