We are a big family, with 5 kids. We all love our toasted sandwiches. However our machine which is not very old has a broken clip. This makes it impossible to make good toasties. We expected it would last longer than a few months 😞

Like most children of the 80's, I grew up with fond memories of the Breville toastie maker. It's presence in most homes was so ubiquitous that for most of my generation, there was no concept of 'jaffles', only 'Brevilles'.A cheese and baked bean Breville was a thing of joy, especially on a cold afternoon after sport! What set the Breville apart was the 'slice and seal' action, which kept any runny elements inside and not all over the place. An unfortunate side effect of this was a volcanic effect - I have lost count of how many times I burnt the roof off of my mouth due to the cheesy lava inside. Small price to pay, and a good way to teach patience...Which leads me to the current product I am reviewing. Small price to pay, and a good way to teach patience...Which leads me to the current product I am reviewing. At first glance it seems to tick all the boxes - larger capacity (4 v 2); automatic countdown timer; super power (2000watts v 1000watts of the original); cut and seal. However, the results are not consistent with expectations. Using plain white bread (the gold standard when making jaffles), I encountered 2 issues. Firstly, the outside did not crisp up as much as it should. This was despite using a small amount of butter on the outside (as all good jaffles require). The result of this can be seen when removing the jaffle - when levering up the jaffle from an outside corner ( the preferred method), it would bend due to the degree of sogginess. Second, once removed, a jaffle should be able to be separated into its 2 halves by bending across the slice and seal line - at which the crisp line should snap easily. With the Power Toastie, this is not possible - I have had to use a knife each time to halve them cleanly.I am unsure as to whether this is an issue with the slice and seal action itself, a temperature issue (not hot enough to crisp up properly), or both. I know that this is not an issue with the smaller Original or Original '74, as I have one if these also, so am tempted to buy another Original so that I can make 4 at once (as I have 3 kids under 7...)So for those new to Jaffles, this may be sufficient for your needs, however if this will be a little bit of nostalgia for the Gen X'ers out there, I would recommend the Original'74

The last Breville Toastie maker we had lasted over 20yrs! We only threw it out because the lock broke. I bought this machine believing it will be the same as the last, especially because it is the same brand... BOY WAS I WRONG! In the year i have had it not once has it come out crunchy, all the crusts glued together & the 2 halves snap apart... INSTEAD it is soggy, takes forever to cook, the crusts come apart (all contents throughout the machine & my counter top) & you have to cut it in half with a knife! VERY disappointed family here! I read through the other reviews below & i can see i am not the only one having these same issues! SORT IT!

I have been using this machine for the last 3 months. On the Plus side it does cook the toasties. On the minus side.... u can't get them out in one piece once cooked.I have tried an endless combinations of fillings. I butter the things to death, and still no joy. Please invent one that cooks, cuts and then lets you remove the food.kind regards,A broken man.
We thought we'd buy a better toasty sandwich maker and was instantly disappointed, over complicated and no matter how much butter you use it sticks and dries out the bread. Because of this we have used it about 5 times in a year one time the handle cracked, tonight we plugged it in and it made a weird noise and let out a puff of electrical smoke and is now dead. The only good thing is I am finally rid of the thing.
I have been using this machine a quite few times now, the cut and seal, seals but doesn't cut, need to use a knife. The toasties don't seal on the outside edges, I have tried 2 different sizes of bread. As the edges don't seal the mess is on the inside, making the toasties soggy and fillings, mainly cheese, pour out of the corners of the machine. The button depression also filled with cheese. The machine is hard to clean, warm or cold using multiple strong paper towels. I had planned on buying a Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer, not sure now. What has happened to the reliability of the Breville brand. As I said, Really Disappointed.
Kudos to Breville. This toastie maker completely lives up to the reputation forged by Breville as a market leader in the small appliance category. Back in the 80's, I had an SG8D which functioned perfectly as described for 35 years. Based on that experience, I shelled out for this unit, and find it is simply an updated version of the same product. It is extremely simple to use, and the non-stick coating makes it a dream to clean - it's as easy as wiping over lightly with a damp cloth before the unit has cooled. This unit comfortably handles sandwiches up to 2.5 inches thick, with the best cutting action of all the toastie makers working brilliantly. This unit comfortably handles sandwiches up to 2.5 inches thick, with the best cutting action of all the toastie makers working brilliantly. It may still need a little assistance with very thin pieces such as tomato skin, but if cooked properly, the crisp cut line of the sandwich is very simple to snap apart.Ignore the claims that this unit doesn't seal the sandwich properly as they are untrue. The instructions explain exactly how to operate the toastie maker with larger sandwiches - and the method works perfectly. As for the reports of fillings running out of the sandwich - this is entirely operator error. I make tinned spaghetti and honey toasties regularly, and nothing ever runs out of any of the sandwiches. Although, I apply the honey directly to the bread, and don't use half a tin of spaghetti on each sandwich either. Be smart in your sandwich preparation, and remember heated cheese melts and becomes extremely oily. Common sense should tell you to NEVER put sliced or block cheese in any toastie maker. If you want cheese, try applying a layer of cream cheese to the bread. It will never be any runnier than it is upon application, so it won't run out anywhere. As for sauces, the same method should apply. If you apply sauce directly to the bread, you end up with a uniform coverage across the entire sandwich, and there is no excess sauce to escape - which is exactly what happens when you put the sauce on last..So, the bottom line is; this is by far the best toastie maker out there, and it works exactly as described. If you're in the market for a product to toast your sandwiches, you've found exactly what you're after. Your search should end right here.
It’s terrific! Set a timer and the little more button is perfect if you want to brown them just a wee bit more! They cook evenly, and with the four sections you can cook up a few in just minutes. Good solid construction, low profile for a streamline look, and the coating on the cooking surface is good quality. Super easy to clean. I’m very happy with my purchase :) Price for the product having used it now a few times is good value.
It is a cool looking design, but unfortnatly that is where it's good qualities stop. The toasties just sticks to the surface get torn apart causing a mess when opening or trying to pry the toasties off the machine. This is not a case of wear and tear and scratches, this was a prioblem from day 1. And within 6 months, the latch that holds the lid closed broke. All that money, and now it is landfill. By far, this is the worst toasted sandwitch maker I've seen. I cannot deliver on it's core purpose of existing. Don't waste you time or money on this product.
This would be the worst toastie pie maker that we have bought. Right from the word go we have had bread stuck to the cutting fins. Also appears that the coating is coming off these also. This has only ever been cleaned with a wet cloth. Will never buy one of these Breville machines again.
