Big Guy Heel Cushion Failure

It should be noted that these orthotics work in my other (ugly) walking shoes. This was not the case here. Again the heel basically collapsed, turning my foot outward and straining the ankle. I tried it again with different socks, different tension on shoe strings, etc. Nothing worked. Now I am stuck with a pair of shoes that have only been worn a couple of times and no solution for my problem. I hope Brooks reads this and provide some other options.

Comfortable, but a little too much shoe for me.

I really wanted to like this shoe. I haven't worn a Brooks running shoe in many years. I usually wear an 11.5 or 12, but based on reviews, I ended up ordering the 12, which gave me that thumb's width between the end of my biggest toe and the end of the shoe. My feet are also slightly wider than normal, and I ordered the regular width. My toes felt good in the toe box and did not rub on the outside like many shoes I try on. Unfortunately, I think the drop, stack height and/or too thick heel made the shoe somewhat of a chore to walk in. While walking on a walking path for about an hour, I felt like every step was a little unnatural and took a little extra more work than normal. Afterwards, my knees and calves were a little sore. The shoes themselves are comfortable, and if I had the money I may have kept them as an everyday, knock around shoe, but unfortunately, they will be going back. Luckily, Brooks has the best try on/return policy of any shoe brand!!

Meh. The Glycerin 20 is a new shoe. Nothing like the 19 which was only a little different from the 18 which was only a little different .... (you get the idea). Perhaps Brooks is trying to copy Hoka with the fat soles? I'm not wild about the looks, but to be fair I didn't notice being taller than usual(and they say the 21 is 2mm taller!). I'll reiterate: THIS IS NOT THE SAME Glycerin. Note, the fit may be more true to size than previous models. I like "roomy" and had moved all the way up to 11.5 with the previous Glycerins from 10.5 for most other shoes, but 11 is more likely right with this model. The heel cushioning is great but the forefoot seems stiffer, a bit of a shock when it struck (wanted some sorbethane). To be fair, it was quite cold, and note that these ... MoreMeh. Glycerins have zero resistance to water (get soaked walking though short wet grass) and breath far too well to keep feet warm. Last, a general comment on previous models which is that Brooks soles wear out FAST. I run several times a week and rotate shoes(so not more than twice a week per pair), but the bottom colored layer starts to peel off long before it should and both the heel edges and center of the forefoot wear down quickly. Gone are the days of long-wearing carbon soles.

Excellent customer service
13 May 2024

I was compelled to give a review based on an excellent customer service experience I had with a problem with a different shoe (and I would give the customer service 5 stars, or more if possible), I felt very well taken care of by Brooks and note the company and customer service agent went above and beyond to help me. As for this shoe, I picked it as a replacement to the now-defunct Levitate line as I needed a neutral support shoe with which to replace it. The Glycerin 21 certainly avoids a blister problem I had previously on the last iteration of Levitate#6 (sadly! The prior ones I tried including Levitate #2 and #5 were perfect) and this model is also quite roomy in the toe box (maybe a bit too roomy for my narrow feet). It also has an abundance of cushion. My critiques of the shoe (which I knew going into purchasing it but chose it anyway) are that in comparison to the Levitate, there is perhaps too much cushion and so it is a little clunky and I lack sensitivity of the ground. It's more of a walking than running shoe in this regard, I think it might hamper my speed if using for running, but I use it exclusively for long walks and at work, and it will fit my needs just fine for the season. It also kind of looks like a "clown shoe" due to so much rubber on the bottom/sides - I don't care about this myself, but just to note for those ordering this online. I'll probably end up gravitating toward a different pair for the future, but it will work well for me for now. Thanks again Brooks for your spectacular customer service!

Glycerin 21 Review From a Cross-Trainer who runs for cardio
5 January 2024

Prior to telling you about the shoe I'd like to give a rough idea of my body type and what I use the shoe for. I'm roughly 5'11" with a slim build and have started a fairly regular (3+ time/week) cross training program to get in shape. As part of this program I will run anywhere from 1 to 3 miles either on a treadmill or with gym workouts. I have tried a few different high end running/cross training brands so I have a pretty good feel for what is out there. Generally, I tend to purchase a shoe that leans toward cross training vs pure running so I was excited to give the Glycerin a try as it is definitely a more running focused shoe.First thing I noted when putting the Glycerin on was a slightly snug fit from the stretchy top material. After using the shoes for a few weeks this fit has relaxed a little, to more of a 'just right' fit that felt great on the treadmill and on the gym floor. One notable difference from previous shoes that leaned more towards cross-trainers was that the Achilles and heal area height was shorter but not an issue, just different. Final fit note is that as a former Hockey player I struggled with 'lace-bite' on the top of my foot but found that the glycerin 21 shoe tongue provided better cushioning/protection than other shoes I have used recently. How have the shoes impacted my workout? Being a running focused shoe and the first shoe that I have tried with the large foam sole, I find running and walking to be much more comfortable, and as a result I have been able to train more aggressively here. The one drawback is that the foam sole and stretchy top material do not provide as much support as a cross-trainer would in lateral movements. Would not recommend shuttle runs or aggressive ladder workouts in these.Odds and Ends: I have the all black version - maybe should have been braver and gone with one of the more colorful options, pretty bland looking. Fit/Finish/Quality are as expected of a premium brand. Sole grip is above average for a running shoe.Would I buy in the future? Definitely. Despite the limitations in lateral movements the advantages for running comfort are definitely worth it - in the future I plan to have a cross training shoe and a running shoe in my rotation as a result and will coordinate workout plans with shoe choice.

I buy for comfort

I really like the Glycerin. I have flat feet, prone to plantar fascistic, allergic to microbial treatments in many shoes, and I have old ankle, knee and back injuries.... finding a shoe that does not aggravate any of these conditions is critical. The Glycerin meets my requirements with adequate cushioning, wide toe box and laces that do not slip I prefer a firmer arch so I remove the insole and replace it with another that I prefer.I prefer the darker shoe and lace colors because I find the oyster/cream/white colors look soiled quickly. I walk 3 miles of dirt trails, asphalt roads and city sidewalks daily. A pair of Glycerin last 3 months for me.I highly recommend following the Brooks sizing recommendations. I'm extremely picky with shoes. I like these a lot.
28 January 2024

I am picky with shoes, but hey, I'm in my 40s now, life is too short to wear shoes that make me even the slightest bit unhappy. Here is what is important to me, more or less in order of priority: a flexible upper that does NOT dig into the top of my foot when it bends with my steps (it's shocking how many shoes do this—does that go away after breaking them in?), at least some arch support, wide enough for my wide feet, breathable, overall comfort, good look/style, able to slip on and off without tying/untying, the tongue doesn't slide off to the side, my heel is held in place, good for walking/everyday use (not for running; I work in an office but some of my work requires a lot of standing and walking and hauling equipment), lightweight.I usually have two pairs ... MoreI am picky with shoes, but hey, I'm in my 40s now, life is too short to wear shoes that make me even the slightest bit unhappy. Here is what is important to me, more or less in order of priority: a flexible upper that does NOT dig into the top of my foot when it bends with my steps (it's shocking how many shoes do this—does that go away after breaking them in?), at least some arch support, wide enough for my wide feet, breathable, overall comfort, good look/style, able to slip on and off without tying/untying, the tongue doesn't slide off to the side, my heel is held in place, good for walking/everyday use (not for running; I work in an office but some of my work requires a lot of standing and walking and hauling equipment), lightweight.I usually have two pairs of shoes I alternate every other day. After three years of the same two pairs of shoes, it was finally time to find some more. This is for casual everyday wear.I set my budget at a maximum of one hundred twenty dollars for each pair.Over the past few weeks, I tried 20 different pairs of shoes. Of those 20, only three were acceptable, and from there I narrowed it down to two: this Brooks Glycerin 20 Wide, and another pair from a different brand from a different website.Basically, this Glycerin 20 checks ALL my boxes. The sole is cushiony. These shoes are very lightweight and breathable—I owned a pair of Brooks a bunch of years ago (that I used almost exclusively for running, not daily casual wear) and I loved those, too. There's a kind-of-thick seam that runs across the top of my foot, where the laces end toward my toes, where the bottom of the tongue meets the upper. There was a day recently when I felt it surprisingly strong, some pressure. But then I haven't felt it since during the next few times I've worn them, so I'm not worried. Loosening the laces helped. Not concerned, just something to watch for. I felt it more just sitting around, and less when I was actually taking steps, so I bet these would be great for running. Sorry I'm not running in these, Brooks. However, I did need to run to a meeting across town the other day, and they felt good. The arch support is good. On a scale of 0% = flat and 100% = waaay too much, then 55% is probably right where I would ideally want it to be in a shoe. These shoes are probably at 51% on that scale.I only just barely made my final decision about 2 weeks ago. So, I have limited experience—you're not getting an "I've worn these for six months and here's my report" review from me here, but I hope someone out there still finds value in this. And it's going very well so far. I recommend you give these a try. You've done it, Brooks. You have created one of the best shoes I've ever worn. Give the designer(s) a raise. Thanks.

Tongue piece design HURTS at end of day for latest versions of Brooks' shoes
20 April 2024

The issue I have with all of the Brooks shoes I have ordered in the last two years is the tongue of the shoe. Full disclosure: I'm not a runner, but I am a shoe wearer who wears these Brooks shoes all day long for comfort and stability. I noticed a strange aching discomfort at the end of the day on the top part of my foot in the upper ankle area. This has gone on for so long that I went to see a doctor and got scans only to finally come to the conclusion that it's these Brooks shoes I've been buying/wearing all day. The tongue is especially long in the center and also can slide to the side leaving the corner poking into that part of your ankle. The tongue is especially long in the center and also can slide to the side leaving the corner poking into that part of your ankle. The design department needs to revisit this issue because previous versions of this shoe along with other lines like Adrenaline had shorter, flatter tongues that did not cause as much of an issue (see pic comparison). I love the shoes, hate the unnecessary pain, and the fact that I spent a lot of money for an unnecessary doctor's visit w/diagnostic testing (since my insurance is so terrible). Since you may not be able to tell what I'm talking about based on the online pictures advertising this shoe, I'm posting my own pics to show this tongue which is found on the latest versions of the shoes of Glycerin 21 along with the others I mentioned. I bought Ghost Max because tongue piece appeared in the ad pic to be a little straighter, lower, less angular than these, but it still causes an aching discomfort when I remove my shoes at end of day just not to the degree that the Glycerins do. I didn't get an Adrenaline version this year because of ugly colors/design. Aside from the tongue piece issue, which sadly is proving significant or I would not have sought a dr and been willing to pay the medical bills, the shoe feels great. It has a similar Ghost Max cushiony sole (without the heel drop feeling that Ghost Max has). Brooks please reduce the size of the tongue pieces! You did before 19 versions and prior, I know you can do it again. If this is a runner enhancing design, can you make a shoe with a removable tongue piece and sell an alternate piece for non-runners that could be attached?

Use to love Brooks Glycerin 20 but…
7 January 2024

Use to love the Brooks Glycerin 20 shoes but something has changed. During the past 2-3 years I have only worn Brooks Glycerin 20. Iam a daily walker and absolutely loved these shoes. Bought a new pair in July to replace a worn out pair. No issues. Then Glycerin 20 went on sale at Fleet Feet so bought an additional 3 pairs on line due to better color selection and a 4th pair at the store. NONE of them fit my right foot correctly. Now my right foot has not changed but something with these shoes has. The arch support in the right shoe partially hits my foot arch with the rest of it hits my heal. It is extremely uncomfortable as it feels like I have a large rock in my shoe. It causes my foot to throb and cramp. I kept returning these shoes to Fleet Feet and ordering another color, thinking it might just be a fluke with that one pair…but alas it was not. The subsequent shoes that I purchased have had the same flaw and those have been returned. Iam now trying the Brooks Ghost Max but am not a fan. Shortly I will try the new Glycerin 21 model…perhaps the pattern for the right shoe has been corrected as I LOVE the Glycerin model but at this point unless something changes, I will no longer be able to enjoy them.

Use to love the Brooks Glycerin 20s until something changed…
8 January 2024

For the past 2-3 years I have worn Brooks Glycerin 20 shoes. I love them but something recently has changed. I bought a new pair midyear to replace a worn out pair…no issues. Then the Glycerin 20s went on sale and I purchased 4 pairs from Fleet Feet. I have had issues with ALL of them (4 pairs- 3 purchased online through Fleet Feet due to better color selection and 1 in store) and all have been returned. Originally I thought it was a fluke with that one specific shoe purchased but not when ALL of them had the same issue. Basically the right shoe’s arch support is now hitting part of my foot’s arch, as well as hitting my heal. It feels like Iam walking on a ball. My left shoe is fine. Now my right foot has not changed but it seems the pattern or the way it is ... MoreFor the past 2-3 years I have worn Brooks Glycerin 20 shoes. I love them but something recently has changed. Now my right foot has not changed but it seems the pattern or the way it is stitched or the factory where it is made changed. This change causes my right foot to throb and cramp, and makes it impossible to wear. I will see if the Glycerin 21 has the same issue, but as mentioned I have worn Glycerin 20 for 2-3 years with no issues. Now the right shoe issue is making it impossible for me to ever wear any newly purchased Brooks Glycerins again.
