Compact and Good Looking

Good looking printer with clean lines. A4 so takes up less space than our old A3 Brother printer did, but has all the same familiar features. Only 4 stars because* although it prints very quickly (both black and colour) you have to have the paper lugs pulled out to catch the prints as they shoot out in portrait* you need to keep space in front of the printer clear, so not so compact after all.*plasticky comapred to older model - and the lid doesn't hold itself up, needs TLCOverall, pleased for the price at JLP. Service and Delivery were excellent.

EXCELLENT PRINTER/COPIER

I am very much enjoying my new Brother printer. I like its ease of operation and especially the big paper bin. Love it. Most if not all other eco-printers I've used have small bins for paper. I've had no issues with my Brother, encased in its neat frame with easily accessible ink. A "Brother" was recommended by my flesh and blood brother, who has used Brother printers for some years. Excellent choice!

Ordered this printer as the old one had finally given up the ghost. Was so surprised when it was delivered the very next day. Wow! That was super speedy. Easy to set up and love the wifi connections. Now can easily print from my iPhone or Mac just by using wifi. I can even use the Brother App and print whilst away from home - not sure why I'd use that but it's clever! Office grade pro printing. The printer was recommended to me by my brother-in-law who researches what's good and what isn't. I'm very pleased with it and with the speedy service from JL

Excellent value for money printer
1 October 2022

You get what you pay for. This printer is excellent value for money. When you buy a printer, you really have to think about the cost of running it. The cost of the ink can add many times to the cost of the initial purchase. This printer prints many more pages from one set of cartridges than our previous printer from a different manufacturer which cost us an arm and a leg to run. This printer has room to store paper as well which means you are not constantly having to put paper in the feeder. An excellent product.

Great MFC but software too basic and full of bugs
27 December 2021

Scanner driver failed to install, Wireless mode would not work so I used network mode installed via USB and then the installation failed to exit the USB dialog box. Iprint&scan is too basic for my needs (doesn't even have a preview). Paperport would not install even though it went through the motions and then left no trace in my win10 apps and programs. I ran the installations at admin level 5 times each on both of my computers and finally gave up and called geeks2u. He had all the same problems which was reassuring but frustrating. Then I had to figure out which Twain and WIA drivers were the correct ones. Brother should not release software unless it works and this is a prime example. I had another MFC years ago that gave similar installation problems with downloaded software and I had to resort to the original installation discs. Pity there weren't any of these shipped with the Brother machine. Hardware wise, the Brother is great. The software lets it down.

Great printer but scanner feed eats documents.
10 October 2022

Fast quality printing with fairly straight forward setup on all devices over Wifi. Biggest issue is the document scanner on the top eats my documents. The first few documents scanned a little crooked but acceptable, but one document was eaten by the rollers and jammed the mechanism that required opening the scanner feed and cleaning it out. Luckily the document wasn't irreplaceable.Yet to see how the ink usage performs. I run the prints on economy mode and they are slightly lower in contrast, hence saving ink but I need most of my documents clear and crisp so I have to change the setting when required to normal.

Lot of functions in a small footprint
22 April 2022

I like the fact it has auto feed for scanning documents so I don't have to hang around to place each page on the scanner. The dual paper trays allow you to have plane paper and photographic paper in the printer and switch between the two. Having USB, Ethernet and WiFi connectivity allows you put the printer on your network or print to it from your mobile or attach with a USB cable.Very capable printer with good print quality.Downside is its not that easy to set up the wireless printing option.

Perfect! Ignore the Which review!
28 April 2022

Easy to set up on a Mac, and just works without any fuss or setup needed by any other devices, both iOS and Windows. It is responsive - no wake up delay - and prints clearly and quickly, and the scanner is good quality. Ink cartridges are huge and you are not tied in to monthly payments or any of that tosh.Which magazine states that this printer uses a lot of ink during cleaning cycles, but looking closely at the figures in that review it becomes clear that don't they make any sort of sense, since they imply that it would use rather more than an entire set of inks for cleaning per year of printing a few sheets each month. Very Disappointing
20 May 2022

I bought this printer 3 weeks ago from JL. It has been a pain since day one. When it prints the noise it makes is terrible. More like a tractor engine than a printer. You cannot speak to a real person in support (unlike HP) and all they send you is a long list of links none of which have made any difference. I am now awaiting my latest missive from somewhere in deep space with yet another set of potential remedies. Oh, by the way, once you take your noise cancelling earphones off, the print quality is very good.

Worst Printer Ever

Brother mfc-J4540W Is the worst printer our business has ever owned. Worked good for about first month, then it started getting worse every week. Now it has PMS 27days a month. It goes offline for no reason, then you turn back online, if your lucky that will work. Then you run trouble shooter, it says printer is turned off when its on, another 10minutes waisted, turn printer off and on, run troubleshooter again. It works but now windows says USB device not recognized. Finally, you remove the device re-install the device again another 10 minutes waisted. So it finally works WOW then next day after the computer been turned off overnight you have to do it all again. WOULD NEVER BUY BROTHER PRINTER AGAIN, so once all ink is used it be in the bin.. NFC works with iPhone but doesn't work with New Oppo Reno 5G phone.
