A single use printer

Like most printers, this Brother has problems, probably more than most. The wifi continually drops out. It goes into deep sleep mode all the time and requires unplugging and restarting. By the time the initial toner cartridge is empty, the drum needs replacing and these cost more than a new printer. It's terrible that this kind of techno-waste exists. Add to that the quality of text is bad and print, very bad and what have you got? Another tech headache. Whether better printers exist is problematic - inkjets dry out and clog, the ink costs a fortune. Lasers have drums that fail and expensive toner. Probably hand writing or fax is more reliable.

This printer is replacing the very similar HL-2240 printer I've had for several years. I like the compact shape, and simple black and white laser printing offered by these printers. Relatively fast print speed, good quality printing, and pretty economical toner usage...especially if you use off-brand toner offered by many different venders. I'd recommend this printer, or the corded version if you can find one...I was waiting for almost a year for the cheaper corded version but gave up waiting because of the difficulty in finding one for purchase!

Recently purchased Brother HL-L2305W to replace my colour printer. Best decision ever. This printer is compact for a home/office. The print quality is great. I'm using the 600dpi setting with print cost savings and impressive shading. No need for a colour hard copies. Print speed is good. A very quiet printer with Wi-fi connections. Plus the replacement cartridge pricing is competitive.

Good value, wireless setup was vague.
7 January 2023

This printer is the replacement for our previous Brother printer that I was given from my previous job, manufactured in 2004 it chugged right along for at least 10 years until the heat element died. Based on this I bought a brand spanking new one and it appears to be of the same quality as the old one (HL-1440 if you're curious) The Pro: It comes with an installation CD that was totally unnecessary for the Windows 11, 10 and 7 computers it was installed to, every one of them recognized and installed the correct drivers as soon as the USB cord was plugged in or found on the network, flawlessly and quick. Having wrestled with print drivers in the past this was a pleasant change of pace. Having wrestled with print drivers in the past this was a pleasant change of pace. The Cons: Only one, the quick setup guide for setting up the wireless connection is so vague that it's practically useless, and frankly the official Brother video to do this wasn't a whole lot better. Found some dude on YouTube who did a much better job of explaining it and was able to set it up in about 10 minutes, understand that their is no computer interface to set this up, you're working with a one line LCD display on the printer itself with only Up and Down buttons to input information. If you have a long wireless password it's quite tedious to enter this way and if you miss a digit the printer will think about it for a good 30 seconds plus before it spits out a page to tell you it could not connect. This is my first wireless printer so I have nothing to compare it to so can't really say if this is a typical issue with all of them or if it's a Brother issue. However having had to fight with network printers in the past I was overall happy with the results and from the time I opened the box to being able to print test sheets from the network, wireless and Android app was less then an hour. It can print at 600 dpi and has 32 megs of memory on board (I actually had to install additional memory to the old printer, added a 10 Meg chip for a total of 12 we've come a long way:) which should be more than adequate for most print jobs and test sheets came out in seconds over the wireless network. Print quality looks great, no smudging, deletions or lines, crisp sharp text and good solids. If this one performs half as well as its predecessor over the years I would call it a great deal.

Bother is an amazing printer no matter what model you have. I have bought several other makes in the past attracted by other bells and whistles but in the end I give those away and go back to my reliable, high quality black and white Brother. It never has failed me. It is easy to setup. Easy to connect direct or on wifi. Compact. And it is the least costly on a printed page basis.

Perfect for our needs
8 June 2022

We have used this printer/copier for personal use the past year after receiving as a gift from a friend. The only thing "wrong" when we got it was from user error. They couldn't connect it wireless. After finding Brother support and downloading the user manual I connected wireless in about 5 minutes and have had problem free printing bliss ever since. I have owned every model of other company's printer products and never was satisfied with their abilities and quality like this model. We also have noticed a BIG difference in the ink category as well. We get more pages per cartridge than anything we've owned prior to the HL-L2305W which is a big plus when you are retired and have a limited income like us. I would definitely lead friends and family in the direction of ... MoreWe have used this printer/copier for personal use the past year after receiving as a gift from a friend. Printer Review
11 May 2022

As I have only had the printer a couple of weeks it is difficult to make an assessment of the Printer's performance. I followed the installation instructions to the letter but was forced to pay for technical assistance as apparently (according to the technician I hired) Windows 10 retains the ability to direct printing to the printer of its choice rather than any new printer installed. I also had some difficulties installing wi fi to facilitate printing from my mobile phone. I have been partially successful in that I have connected to my wi fi from the modem but I still can't print from the mobile.

Reliable, Economical and Repairable
23 March 2022

I've had this printer for over 4 years and it has been great. Fast printing, is cheap to maintain and has not caused me any issues until recently. Printed a document and found smears on it and an awful smell. Opened the printer up and found a dead cockroach (I doubt there are any cockroach proof printers out there so don't worry about this it seems unlikely). Anyway pulled the whole thing apart and then cleaned it with a normal kitchen wipe put it back together and to my surprise, it still worked. I am writing this review to commend the repairability of the printer and because it has served me well for 4 years and will continue to do so, admittedly with a mild smell which i hope will fade with time.

I bought this three months ago and have had nothing but trouble. The set up instructions were inadequate. My previous Brother HL 2140 was a dream to set up and worked perfectly. Finally with this printer, online help from Brother sorted out the software and it worked for three weeks. However, now it sometimes prints and at other times is off line and won't. I printed an 18 page document and then it printed one page and said error, off line and stopped. Over the next 15 minutes until I cancelled the document it printed parts of pages. The print queue stated it was a 2.6 gb file when it was only a 1640 kb file. I contacted online help again and this time was told it was not the software but the router was too far from the printer. This is nonsense as the failure can occur just after I have been able to print. Be warned. There is some problem with the software or operation of this printer. It is always a lottery as to whether i can print. I am not happy.

wifi doesn't work
29 March 2022

Spent a lot of time trying to connect to wifi. I am sure I did everything right, as it did work for the first time after I set it up. However, the wifi hasn't worked at all since then as the machine always gets itself to deep sleep mode. I read the manual/googled and followed all the instructions to change the settings, it still goes right back to deep sleep as soon as I switch it on. According to manual, wifi might not work if the machine goes to deep sleep. So now each time when I use it I have to connect use the USB cable.
