Even though the notes don't look like it would be doing anything that wild (though the sapodilla is definitely unique), it's unique for a unisex-marketed fragrance. I can't think of many other unisex fragrances that smell quite like this one. It has a light, creamy, airy touch in the opening that feels like it's a mist floating around you. That said, I don't think it's as unique when compared to many women's fragrances, and despite being labeled unisex, this leans feminine to me. It would be really appealing on the right person! I can picture walking by someone wearing this and finding it captivating.

Despite not being particularly fond of any notes in Bal d’Afrique aside from cedar, I recently became fixated on this fragrance and blind bought a full bottle after many internal battles with myself (A Sméagol/Gollum situation, where Bal d’Afrique was my precious). The reviews that I stalked had me expecting something of a pineapple mango creamsicle scented bar of soap. Incidentally, I don’t experience anything close to that. It begins as a nearly underripe lemon, but calms down to a scent strikingly resemblant of August, a discontinued Hollister fragrance marketed for women in the 2000’s. It was, in reality, completely gender neutral, but much too original and apparently ahead of its time; it was discontinued after a what I imagine must have been a successful but ... MoreDespite not being particularly fond of any notes in Bal d’Afrique aside from cedar, I recently became fixated on this fragrance and blind bought a full bottle after many internal battles with myself (A Sméagol/Gollum situation, where Bal d’Afrique was my precious). It was, in reality, completely gender neutral, but much too original and apparently ahead of its time; it was discontinued after a what I imagine must have been a successful but short period of availability. Heavy citrus opening that mellows into a cedar/vetiver dominant woodsy heart with smokey ambered facets. 100% unisex. I don’t experience any black currant, tropical, or floral qualities. No creamy feels. I can smell the “ivory soap” in the drydown, but only with discernment, probably wouldn’t have associated it with soap had I not read that others made that interpretation. As far as vetiver goes, I wouldn’t think this contained any, had I not read the notes listed. I haven’t yet learned to appreciate or even tolerate vetiver as a focus note, aside from its use in Angel Muse, so I tend to..hate it deeply. Like I said though, there’s no typical assault by vetiver here, I think it pairs exceptionally well with cedar and amber to contribute to the dry woodsy effect. In my unrefined but honest opinion, this is simplicity at its finest. The longevity is much better than anticipated on me. In the equitorial heat/humidity, I get 5 hours before I need to compulsively reapply, and I’m more than happy to bring the big awkward bottle with me to reapply prn. Regrettably, the sillage is as tragic as they say. Still absolutely worth a try, and in my opinion it’s worth a blind buy, for anyone. It really is a scent both intriguing and unique; fit for any season, day or night. Easily signature material.

Byredo Bal d'Afrique is a fragrance that exudes warmth, sweetness, and exoticism. The scent opens with a burst of zesty citrus and tangy bergamot, blended with the fresh green notes of neroli and African marigold. As it settles, the fragrance unveils a soft and sensual heart of violet, jasmine, and cyclamen, rounded out by the warm and comforting base notes of vetiver, musk, and amber. Overall, Byredo Bal d'Afrique is a captivating and versatile fragrance that can be worn for any occasion, from a casual day out to a special evening event. The scent is long-lasting and has moderate sillage, so it won't overpower those around you. It's a great choice for those who appreciate unique and sophisticated scents

It's really interesting reading the contrasting reviews on this scent. All scents smell a bit different one everyone, but this seems to be one for which the scent profile varies drastically on different people. I, like some others, first smelled Marc Jacobs Daisy right upon the first spray on my arms and wrist. Daisy has opening notes of gardenia, violet, violet leaf, and fruits, which makes a lot of sense as to why the first spray of Mojave Ghost would be reminiscent of Daisy for many people. Gardenia and magnolia have similar scent profiles, and Mojave Ghost also has violet, and the fruitiness is there in both perfumes on first spritz. To me, Daisy is feminine and young, and keeps smelling that way. It loses that fresh fruitiness that's there when you smell it right out of the bottle. It's unique in that it also smells a bit earthy/smokey? Imagine freshly lain mulch or a damp forest floor coupled with darkly sweet florals and sandalwaood. I wouldn't call it particularly fresh or fruity, but it's pleasant and unique and natural in a way that if someone were wearing this around me, I wouldn't even guess it was from one singular perfume. I would think it was from their floral perfume, their body soap, and their home, and maybe a lingering smell from a bonfire.I'm still trying to figure out if I like it for myself, but I definitely would find this smell pleasant on somebody else. The dry down on me smells sweet and woody and quite musky, so pretty unisex.

I am completely blown away by this scent. I have been eyeing this up for a long time now and kept purchasing other fragrances first. Well my husband bought it for me for my birthday and omg it did not disappoint. I had him purchase the oil first to see how I felt about it and I will now be purchasing a bottle as well. The packaging is gorgeous! This scent is absolutely intoxicating. It’s a woody, musky, and floral scent but not an overpowering traditional floral scent. It’s very unique and I cannot get enough of it. I don’t typically go for floral scents but I have been addicted to violet since owning Tom ford ombré leather and I love most of the notes in this so I was very intrigued. A Divine Revelation

I’ve read a couple of reviews here saying this isn’t up to Byredo standards, but I think it has actually surpassed them. I use their shower gels on a regular bases but the perfumes have never sat on my skin in a pleasant way. My body chemistry has not previously mixed well with their scents. However, Young Rose has been a revelation. I got a free sample and then had to immediately buy a bottle. A friend described it as being very ‘come-hither’ and I think that’s very true, it’s pretty addictive. The results have been (fanning myself) remarkable. I also saw people commenting on the price, which doesn’t strike me as particularly unusual for 100ml. I don’t think I can describe the complexity of scents any better than the literature produced by Bryredo, but I will say that on my skin it isn’t sickly sweet at all, it more sexy and slightly musky. It also lasts a long time on my skin. In fact when I tried the sample I deliberately didn’t wash a patch of skin on my neck to see if it I could still smell it the next morning and I could. And although I probably wouldn’t be considered a ‘young rose’ it doesn’t matter as this is a really grown-up perfume. It’s not just light and airy, it has depth and packs an extremely delicate (because we’re roses) punch. With any perfume I would recommend getting hold of a sample or trying in store before buying a full size bottle.

About two years ago I took a trip to London and on the flight there, the flight attendant had this beautiful scent on that immediately grabbed my attention. I regret not asking her what she was wearing at that moment. Fast forward, I’m in the London airport and I continue smelling the scent and I go inside a perfume store but... I can’t find it. Fragrance that lasts

I don’t know what has happened to my skin but recently I haven’t been able to wear a fragrance and still be able to smell and feel comforted by the scent only a short time after I wear it. I didn’t even realise how this made me feel. I only have the little sample vial of this one and it has become precious to use! There is something about the notes that last beautifully on my skin. I love this scent but really need to justify buying it for myself. I have Rose of No Man’s Land and would never have thought Gypsy Water would have been one I wanted to try. The sample offered with my order has lifted me as I really thought my skin had changed so much I would no longer be able to wear perfume. This is really beautiful. My signature scent, but its name is an ethnic slur
8 November 2022

Byredo's G Water is my signature scent. It is one you can wear to work and no one will smell you unless they are very close. That's the way I like it because in general I do things for me and don't want to intrude on their space. I wear perfume for me. If I want someone to smell me I will bring them close to me. Otherwise, I don't want to smell your banger cologne either. The longevity on this perfume is poor. It doesn't matter if you apply half a bottle. It's going to be gone soon. I apply frequently and get an uplift by smelling it on my wrists. It's very calming scent. It's a good alternative for or a great addition to taking sedatives. I do think that the G word has become or always was an ethnic slur. Certainly in its verb form it is, but that's just me. And a ... MoreByredo's G Water is my signature scent.
