Finally... a reason to upgrade my 1996 MULE!

There is a lot to like about the latest generation of CamelBak bags. Overall, the new MULE Pro is a great bag and will be my new "go to" for long rides for many years.Construction of the bag - like all CamelBak products my family has owned - appears exceptional. I have two bags that I have used (heavily!) over the past 25 years, and neither of them have a single stitch out of place. I have every reason to believe that this bag will endure equally well. The suspension on the MULE is very good. I love the materials selected for both the ventilation and shoulder straps. They seem to be very durable and are quite comfortable. They seem to be very durable and are quite comfortable. With a load of 2L water, tools, and food for the day, the bag is hardly noticable and the bag itself moves very little on my body when it's adjusted properly.I like the magnetic sternum strap as well, especially that it physically locks in place with a slight twist. It is very secure and is easy to operate with one hand. I do not like the magnetic hose clip paired with it, but more on that below.I frequently ride 20-30 miles in the mountains of North Georgia, and I find that there is more than enough room in the bag for my trips. At the same time, the compression straps on the sides help to keep everything tight enough that it shifts very little while riding. I will be doing a series of 60+ mile rides this summer, and do not expect that I will need as much room as is available.Internal and external organization is good. The main compartment is long enough for a compact bike pump, and the zippered pouches help to keep smaller items in place. The external top pouch is perfect for things like sun glasses, but I use it to stow my satellite tracking device (the fabric does not seem to degrade the signal). I've not found a use for the external pocket low on the left side, but whatever you put in there would need to be durable since the contents of the main compartment would be (mostly) on top of it.The storage in the waist straps is a great feature, though they would be more useful if they were an inch or two longer. I find some items, like my gel blocks, are a tight fit and ride a little further back on my hips than I would like. They would be easier to access if they were further forward, and a little extra length would be appreciated. When I first saw the new design on the bladders, I had my doubts, but they are the greatest upgrade on this bag over prior models! The detachable hose was a pleasant surprise, and the baffle built into the bladder helps to control the shape so that it sits flatter against your back. The opening is more than large enough to load ice or drink mixes, and secures with just a quarter turn. The large opening also makes the bag easy to clean since I can fit my entire hand inside.Perhaps my greatest complaint is that the hose has a magnetic mount intended to pair with the sternum strap. I do not find that the magnet is sufficient to retain the hose (it pops loose), and I do not like the position of the mount (across my chest). As an alternative, I have added a "Magnetic Tube Trap" low on the right shoulder strap. Even this is awkward since the clip is "keyed" and the hose has to be aligned to enter the trap. I have a strong preference for the older clip-style tube traps, which were indifferent to the orientation of the hose.I am not a huge fan of removing the bladder from the side. This makes having to secure the bladder at the top of the bag awkward, even with the clip on the strap. It can be hard to see, so the bladder has to be installed or removed more by feel. This is not a major inconvenience, and I'm sure I will adjust to this.I am not sure why there is a new design on the buckles at the waist and cinch straps on the sides. This new design jams once in a while, and I just don't trust them as much as a more traditional design. I will likely end up replacing the buckles on the waist straps at some point, and it is unfortunate that the others cannot be replaced easily. It's a strong bag with a lot to like. Fix the issues with the hose clip and the buckles, and it's easily a five star product.

Something I've been wondering about CamelBak for years: Why do some straps have elastics or velcro to roll up the excess but others are just left to flap in the wind? Why velcro on the shoulder strap roll-up? Do you secretly hate your customers and want to cut up their shirts or their bare skin? The external straps on the bottom are a nice addition if you're hauling wet gear you'd rather keep apart from whatever you've managed to squeeze inside the bag.

Great pak. Ventilation against back
20 May 2024

Great pak. Ventilation against back is good. Storage is plenty. Tool roll is an added bonus. Only thing that is not 100% clear is the battery sleeve. I believe it's the outside pouch, hut nothing that I've found seems to clarify that.

I was a great fan of Camelback product, but I'm soooo disappointed. Who ever thought that magnet clip was a good idea? Fiddly you changed your gear, the tube fall off, you open a gate, the tube fall off, you ride downhill, the tube fall off. The bag itself is very wafer thin so I suspect it will get shredded once the brambles are back. But I guess we have to be used too now, law quality for premium price. Not happy.

It's okay, but I'll be looking elsewhere next time

I bought this pack to replace my old 2017 era CamelBak H.A.W.G. LR pack. There wasn't anything inherently wrong with my H.A.W.G. other than wanting a slightly less bulky pack. This is now my third or forth CamelBak pack.I use the pack for mountain biking and ride about 30 to 40 trail miles every weekend with the pack. And monthly during the summer camping/riding trips. I have used the pack for around 600 trail miles now.The newer 2023 era designs are just not as functional or comfortable as the older ones. I do not think I will be purchasing CamelBak packs again, not unless the straps become more comfortable, even at weight penalty. The good:* Cleans up fairly easily after moderately soggy conditions without a rain cover.* Comes with a nice tool storage roll. ... MoreI bought this pack to replace my old 2017 era CamelBak H.A.W.G. I do not think I will be purchasing CamelBak packs again, not unless the straps become more comfortable, even at weight penalty. The good:* Cleans up fairly easily after moderately soggy conditions without a rain cover.* Comes with a nice tool storage roll. Holds pretty much everything tool-wise I like to carry.* Vented mesh backing works fairly well.* CamelBak bladders and hoses are good.* Seems to mostly be holding up well (see rust comment below). That said, I haven't taken a major spill yet.* Good size and looks good. The bad:* The straps are just not comfortable for longer rides (3+ hours). They dig into my shoulders, even leaving marks after an hour from the pressure. I even have the waist strap fairly tight too. Given the narrow waist strap, it'd be nice if the shoulder straps were a bit wider up top.* The integrated chest + hose clip lacks functionality. The host cannot be attached to the strap without the chest strap being attached. The hose is left dangling around when the chest strap is not in use. It's annoying when standing around or carrying the pack to the car.* Similarly, the hose mount on the strap appears to be non-replaceable. The hose clip mount cannot easily be moved from the left strap to the right strap. I do not like the hose going across my chest and prefer it on the right side.* The magnetic clip on the hose has already busted through its (zinc?) coating and is rusting.* The soft lined pocket is too small for many modern phones. It does not fit my Pixel 7 Pro. The internal mesh pocket fits my phone.* I find the newer buckle design on the compression straps and waist buckle to be annoying at times. You need to insert them mildly precisely so the buckle doesn't end up in a weird, half locked state.

Needs improvement
18 June 2023

The magnetic closure does not seem to be designed properly. No matter how much I attempt to adjust, the bite valve is practically in my armpit. I prefer the winter packs because the hose conceals in the strap. There’s just no good way to store the hose with this pack. Other brands have superior hose strap/magnet function. I do like the vented back. With a full bladder, there isn’t a ton of storage room compared to other 100oz Camelbaks I own, but enough for a rain jacket and snacks. Would be nice to have easy access to a phone without removing the pack.

19 May 2023

So, I have used this bag for a few weeks now, approximately twice per week. I like the bag's size, but other than that am not impressed. The zippers throughout are kinda chinzy, so they don't work smoothly. Also, the tiny snap at the top of the bladder pocket doesn't work at all -- has not held even from the first day. Finally, the magnetic clip on the sternum strap is a poor design choice -- it is too easy to release, and has done so unexpectedly a few times. Would not buy this bag again.

Don't waste your money on the Pro version. It is super heavy, Camelbak advertise it at over 800g but when I weighed it it was over 1kg. It was heavier than my old cycling backpack (not Camelback) with my gear inside. The back of the backpack is very curved outwards and very stiff and as a result there is very little space left in the zipped pockets as the curved back is taking up most of the space. And once you fill the water reservoir with 3l of water you will not be able to fit anythin else inside. Your only option will to use the elasticated pocket on the outside of the backpack. The water tube for some reason goes horizontally across your chest from right to left as the magnet to hold it in place cannot be repositioned as it is integrated into one of the buckles. As a result the tubing sticks out over your arm and just gets in a way. I would say save your bucks and go for the 2019 camelback mule which at the time of writing this review is available at half the price.

Winter where I'm at the ride starts off cold and by the halfway point it's time to shed the heavy gloves and wind breaker. The stuff pouch works perfect for that and also holds my drone and controller with no problem on those days. And I've never had a pack that's fit so well, it feels like a coat of armor for your back. All my older Camelbaks had the old-style fill caps, this new screw type cap is a major improvement. The MULE Pro 14 has excessed all my expectations.
