FYI: My upgraded 18-55mm STM that came with the Canon 70D is not going to waste, as I now keep it mounted on my old Canon T3. It's better for videos and only added about 1/4 inch to the lens length in my bag. (The original Canon T3 18-55 lens is retired.) My advice is to get a Canon 18-135mm STM upfront with your camera purchase, as once you have it, you'll never take it off and the 18-55mm STM will gather dust, unless you have another Canon EOS or Rebel like me to use it on.

While image quality is good, the build quality is where this lens suffers. Then again I purchased this lens to build a kit for my son who inherited an older Canon 40D that I had sitting around. I did not want to invest heavily in equipment until he gained more experience. I want to be clear, this lens does at least have good image quality not to mention the STM IS capability which makes for the all plastic body and mounting.

The lens auto focus stopped working after couple of months and use of 5-10 times . Also the vendor Tristate Camera is also not very responsive . I have dropped an email regarding my concern but there was no response from them . Though I understand that the issue might be with lens and I’m trying to get connected with Canon support but I expected the vendor TriState Camera to be lil’ courteous to their customer .Don’t recommend this lens and the vendor TriState camera

It is reasonably quiet, smooth operating, quick to focus accurately, steady and reliable over time. While it is not a macro lens and close ups are limited, it shoots close enough to show details on small plants, flowers, and other small items (like a watch or other small object) - especially useful for shooting images for eBay listings. If you need to get closer, buy a macro lens! Image quality is inferior to the 18-135 even with image corrections applied, but for the size, weight and cost, this is a good value. My use case is indoor and some outdoor around the house picture taking and did not want to damage or carry the weight of the 135 zoom. Taking one star off for build quality and use of plastic mount. In volume, adding a metal mount should cost no more than a $5 and Canon chose to keep more profit than offer a metal mount which would be more durable.

Only 45 AF points are supported and of those, only the middle group of 25 AF points are cross type, the outer 10 on each side are vertical or horizontal only. This is a major limitation of this lens. I have the 18-135 mm USM Nano also, and that lens has all 65 AF points active in full cross type mode with the 7DII body. None of the reviews I have seen on the internet about this lens have pointed this out and it is not mentioned in the Camera or Lens manuals. Yes I know this is not a premium lens and for that reason it does not have a premium price but it is excellent value for money. The pictures at all zoom settings appear sharp and un-distorted to all normal eyes. The auto-focus is fast and silent as is the the image stabilisation. The zoom ring is smooth to turn and knurled enough to provide a non-slip purchase. The lens is lightweight and compact so it has become my go to lens when I only want to take one with me. The short macro-focusing distance is useful and gives a nice blurry background. The only niggle is that it is f4 not f2 but the image stabilisation compensates for this to some extent. For very low light conditions I use another lens. Very happy with my purchase.
I purchased this as a pre owned unit as I was wanting more versitility than the two lenses that came with my camera provided. I am working on 70,000 photos with this camera and since receiving the lens have taken just over 800 photos with it and it has become my go to lens. It is so versitile for what I like to do. I take a lot of photos at car shows and may be better known for my sunset photos plus my cats tend to be great subjects.
Pros: This is a replacement for the same lense I had for a few years. The motor eventually quit. Fingers crossed that this lense will last a longer than the other. I use it all the time! It is exactly the focal length I need in my camera "bag."
