Australia Warranty

I was excited to discover that this grip was included when I purchased the R6 body. I did however receive one with and Australian/New Zealand warranty. I sent the first one back and asked them to send a grip with a USA warranty but again received another Australia grip. I have given up trying to have B&H send the correct one. This one works fine, spoke to Canon USA to verify that it was indeed a Canon grip and not an aftermarket product. Just be aware that if you are looking for a USA warranted grip that you check the warranty card before unpacking it.

Barely useful compared to expectations.

Great for Portrait shots and doubles Run Time

There is also a thoughtfully added ON-OFF rotary switch that has noting to do with camera power, but instead disables ALL of the redundant buttons and dials if you are shooting in landscape mode only, and want to reduce the chance of accidentally changing a setting. All in all, this is a well-designed, very useful accessory IF you take a lot of shots in portrait mode and IF you need to shoot for more extended periods between battery changes.

Grip works, design falls short

The joystick is not placed as similarly as the one on the camera as it could be. But the real bummer for me is that there is no USB port for charging it. You have to go through the camera's USB to charge the batteries, and that's unfortunate. The battery grip for the R was $100 cheaper, and it came with the USB charger as well as a port to charge it. I will say I understand their reasoning. With the R you couldn't power the camera with USB. You had to use the battery adapter. So the fact we can use USB to power the camera without the adapter is a plus for the camera, but I'd still prefer the battery grip have its own USB port.As for the positives, I can't say it does anything out of the ordinary. It's a vertical/battery grip. It doubles the life of the camera without having to switch batteries, and it allows more ergonomic shooting when vertical. The hefty price tag is a mark against this as well. But that's a privileged complaint, so I didn't take a star away for that since they are entitled to charge what they want. I just wish it was more function to justify it.

Improves ergonomics.

It's great that these mirrorless cameras are getting smaller and make your kit easier to travel with. With that being said sometimes it''s nice to have a more comfortable grip on your gear when shooting handheld. Got to test this on a portrait shoot right after purchase. Makes switching from horizontal to vertical shots way more comfortable. Added bonus that now I don't have to sweat battery life. It's nice that the R5 supports charging the battery in camera through the usb c port. So at the end of the day I can just plug in the camera and charge batteries up. Not a solution all the time, but occasionally a cool little bonus if I don't have the charger with me.

Indispensable

Frankly, I don't think I would ever get another camera that doesn't have the larger body with vertical grip, or a battery grip accessory as part of my kit. For one, I do a lot of professional video production, so having the extra battery capacity is critical. I'm using this on the Canon R5 C now, but I'm coming from a lot of heavy use with the 1DX mkII, and the 5D mkIV, so I want that battery life reliability I got with the full-body/large capacity battery (1DX), and battery grip (5D) that I got with those. There's not a lot to say other than it seems to stay tight against the body of the camera. I've used third party grips on other cameras and sometimes that screw gets a little loose, and the tightening wheel doesn't seem to be your friend. The build quality and reliability (so far, after a few weeks) is exactly what I would expect from Canon. I probably won't remove it from the camera unless I'm using the R5 on a gimbal.

Sent a Grey Market grip?
1 July 2023

I've used Canon grips with my DSLRs for many years. I've never had a single problem with any of them. When I received the BG-R10, I discovered (as have several others) that B&H is sending Grey Market equipment without notification that it is Grey Market. The Warranty card is for Australia/New Zealand. I'm tempted to return it and insist on a USA item, but I need it for a job in just a few days. I've been buying virtually all of my equipment from B&H for nearly 40 years and have never before had them try to pull a fast, dishonest trick like this. Shame on B&H!

Solid

Feels like a solid part of the camera. That comes with some weight (especially with the batteries), but it really extends the number of photos I can shoot at a time. I like being able to put all my fingers on the grip, especially with larger lenses.I really liked that it had a place to store the camera's normal battery door so I wouldn't lose it. Nice attention to detail. The controls on the battery grip are good, but maybe a little bit of a different placement that throws me off just a bit.

Some upgrades from prior grips
3 April 2023

Comparing this to the prior grips for 5DMk4 and 5DMk3- the basics are in the same relative position. There is the addition of the control dial to match this new addition to the R5/R5C. The ability to charge both batteries (not simultaneously though, one then another) in the grip while connected to the camera is very handy. If you have used prior grips, this is what you would expect plus the upgraded functions. Of note, for the R5C - the battery grip only gives longer duration but not more voltage. More power is still required to operate RAW + Lens/ etc.-- either USB-C or Canon dummy battery specific for the R5C (R5 standard dummy battery only delivers standard voltage).

Why the step backwards?
16 January 2022

It's a nice grip and should serve me well for years. However, there are a few things I don't understand. Like others have said, the buttons are placed a little differently, but this doesn't bother me much as they are in the same general alignment from left to right. I also find the placement of the joystick as troubling. I can use it with a little finger gymnastics. What I like the least about this grip is the battery tray. It feels like its made of the cheapest of plastics and they have spring-loaded holders for each battery now. It just feels like it will break in your hands one day. So, what do you prefer? Charging using the camera's usb port and risk breaking/damaging this port one day, or, pulling out this flimsy tray which will also likely break one day.
