Prior to buying this lens my widest was 16mm which I really liked a lot for my Landscape and Realestate photography and it was getting me plenty of work. But when I read about the 11-24 being Rectilinear I knew I needed this lens. The purchase price was definitely a big stretch but wow, what a lens. This lens made my Realestate shots soooo much easier and better than the 16-35mm I had been using. I was able to get so much more in and didn't have to go pushing and pulling the final image to get lines straight so it also saved me a lot of time. For my Landscapes it simply opened up opportunities to photograph things in a single shot that I had previously had to do Pano's for and some of my favourite close and wide Landscapes have come from this unit. The only ... MorePrior to buying this lens my widest was 16mm which I really liked a lot for my Landscape and Realestate photography and it was getting me plenty of work. The lens cap must be used all the time when not taking photo to keep the scratches and ships away and to keep the dust and water off as much as possible. It is not a lens you want to be cleaning any more than absolutely necessary as that also risks scratching it and polishing off the coatings.Treat it with care and it will keep on impressing you for a very long time.

I gave this lens 5 stars because, first of all, it is the only rectilinear lens of this focal length in the world! Sure, Sigma and Nikon both have 12-24mm zooms; but 11 is 11, and 12 is 12, lol. It's on sale now; and I believe it's going to be discontinued. Be very careful in handling it because the front lens element is not protected; and you cannot place filters over it to avoid damage. I'm still putting this glass to the test. So, I have no pictures to post yet. I am going to Iceland to photograph the ice caves. That's where this chunk of glass will shine! Also, this completes my zoom kit ( EF 11-24mm f/4.0L, EF 24-70mm f/2.8L, and the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L )! With this set-up, I can cover virtually any assignment coming my way! Yes, you read correctly! I am a Nikon shooter, having both Z6 and a Z7 mirrorless cameras. My favorite non Nikon lenses are the Canon 100-400mm super telephoto zoom and this 11-24mm lens. I always wanted to own some Canon glass but being a dyed in the wool Nikon user this was not going to happen, till now.The Fringer EF to Z lens adapter changed everything. My Nikon's fully control this Canon lens plus it adds the optical image stabilization of the camera itself. Sweet! But when you need some super-wide coverage, just twist the ring and voila. Obviously at 11mm you are going to get serious perspective distortion. But with the right subject it's less noticeable. The first mistake of a newby is not getting close enough to your subject. The second is not being absolutely parallel to it in both horizontal and vertical planes unless you want an exaggerated effect. My previous super-wide zoom lens was a Tokina 11-16mm F/2.8 but designed only for cropped DX imagers resulting in an actual 16.5-24mm range. For my industrial photography or equipment racks with only a couple of feed of room, this was insufficient. Plus the lens didn't produce images worth writing home about.I've only had this lens for a few days, so I have lots of experimentation ahead. I'm documenting the effects on my small town community of the CORVID-19 pandemic and spent a couple of hours with only this lens on the Nikon for practice. My sample images are a mix of the grandeur of nature and the impact of measures to stay safe.

This lens is nothing short of remarkable, and it has the price to prove it. Of course, you get what you pay for. The lens is tack sharp corner to corner and through the zoom/aperture range. Only small amount of chromatic aberration was noted upon reviewing RAW files. It's nothing that can't be fixed with a tick of a box in post processing, though! For BEST results, use the lens and camera on full manual mode.If you've been thinking about tenting or even making the lens a "keeper", DO IT.As always, Lensrentals is the premier source for renting lenses, cameras and other pro video/photo gear, in my opinion. I spent a couple days examining photos made using the Canon 11-24mm f/4L USM lens. I also looked at countless videos, documentation, reviews from all over the Internet and have read every review of on B&H website about it. I nearly bought it. But in the end I feel the lens has only limited uses. I own a Canon EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM (prime) lens. I also own a Canon 8-15mm fisheye and many other Canon lenses and cameras but I had to pass on this one for now.I regard the 14-24mm lens as a commendable work of Canon engineering. But many people have noticed that objects on the edges of this lens appear much fatter even when they’re not significantly closer to the camera. When objects in the middle are even a tiny bit farther away, they often look dramatically farther. This is a wide lens but not a fisheye. Fisheye lenses not being rectilinear, have the opposite effect with things of uniform size and reasonably similar distance appearing smaller toward the edges.I’m not suggesting that the 11-24mm lens has any engineering faults. I’m not even sure if it’s possible to engineer a rectilinear lens that renders perfection at the edges. Having spent an enormous amount of time in my teen years working with perspective drawing in the 1960s, I’m not even sure that natural perspective follows straight lines, which is partly why I drew fisheye views of cities. As I sit at my computer typing this, I look up to a wall behind my desk. The wall appears to my peripheral vision as if it were essentially curved where it meets the ceiling. Mentally it looks perfectly straight when I stare at it more directly but even so, my direct vision sees a curve. That’s because horizontal lines appear closer together toward the left and right horizon. If I were farther away from this wall behind my desk, it might look perfectly straight. So it’s actually the brain that renders it straight mentally. Curving is perceptually affected by the distance and angle of each portion of that line.Regardless of our natural vision, I’ve seen images from the Canon 11-24mm f/4L USM lens where you’re looking up at a long fortress or other wall, and the top of it is perfectly straight. Is this visual myth, visual reality or a bit of both? I’m not sure but my experience with perspective as an artist in my teens tells me instinctively when things are off kilter. And a lot of other people have noticed that as well with regard to most if not all wide lenses of any kind. This one may be great but none might ever be perfect. If any optical engineer has ever produced a wide angle lens without barrel, pincushion or mustache distortion, it probably still renders enlarged objects on the edges. If it’s possible to engineer a wide angle lens that does not produce some kind of major fatted objects at the edges such as widened windows, fat chairs, or horizontally stretched humans, I’m not aware that such a lens has existed or could ever be scientifically possible. The rectilinear aspect of this lens seems to be the very cause of things getting fatter at the edges. I encountered this problem as an artist half a century ago. If you draw an endless fortress wall stretching to the horizon, it looks more absurdly enlarged on the far left and far right because it does not become smaller at the horizon. And that’s exactly why this camera is best for stretching small rooms, not creating accurate photo art panoramas. Unfortunately, rectilinear design forces things to enlarge at the edges.I found too many examples where the edge stretching was just too much for anyone hoping to use the lens for realism in fine photography. It’s been said numerous times that you need to be careful how you aim the 11-24mm lens when doing full wide shots. That may help but it does not enable a fine art photographer to create an image without distortion. You could shoot an image of a rustic town from a nearby hill. The image might rise to fine art quality by any number of rare qualities but then you might need to crop the sides if objects there appear enlarged. So it’s a bit more hit and miss to use any wide angle lens without getting obvious edge distortion. It’s often said that the Canon 11-24mm lens is ideal for real estate photography but then again those photos that are used to rent and sell homes are often intended to “stretch” the truth, making ordinary small living rooms look like airport hangers. Architects may also find the lens useful for commercial dramatization. Visual distortion may be useful for commercial purposes but fail to excite many fine photographers.I’ve seen some dramatic panoramas produced using the Canon 11-24mm f/4L USM lens. And that’s mostly what I had hoped to use the lens for. But most of the good panoramas that I saw were made in nature without villages or cities or other grid-like scenes that might suffer more visibly from edge distortion. Using pure nature as your source of panoramas, nobody might ever notice edge distortion because nature is not uniform. But it would still be visually unfaithful.Sadly, I wanted to buy this lens until I researched it. I believe it’s obviously best for magazine illustration, real estate and architectural promotion, but not fine photo art nor even fine architectural rendering. I may still buy it in the future. Or I may wait to see if Canon issues an updated version. But I tend to doubt that’s gonna happen anytime soon.Overall, from the images I found on the Internet, I think Canon may have achieved the best super-wide rectilinear lens in history. But I’m just not sure it’s scientifically possible to eliminate every type of distortion in wide lenses. I can see from tons of images and videos that it’s a fantastic lens. I would rate it five stars based on those photos and their rectilinear achievement. But let’s not pretend that any super-wide lens has ever eliminated all types of distortion.
We tested the lens against our other Canon and Sigma lenses on both APS and full frame Canon bodies at same focal lengths and apertures. The Canon 24-70L, both F/2.8 and F/4 + 17-40L match the 11-24. Both more than 50% cheaper. The Sigma 8-16 for APS at $600.00 12 years ago matched the 11-24after F/10- which is where we shoot architecture all the time anyway and we were looking to replace this great little lens because they are long not made anymore and scarce parts. Canon 11-24mm is sharp at f4 and at f2.8 sharpness would be lost. This lens has very little distortion when used straight on. And naturally when tilted up or down the usual linear distortion occurs. But center sharpness is tack sharp and corner sharpness is only slightly soft when shot wide open, and any stopping down instantly corrects the barely noticeable corner weakness. Rear neutral density filters are available and come in a kit. You replace Canon's rear gel filter holder with a supplied u shaped filter holder. Just make sure to use a jeweler's screwdriver to remove the rear gel holder. As the screwdriver supplied with the filter kit will destroy the heads of the screws. Expensive yes but why be cheap when you can protect the front glass elements of this pricey lens. One hundred dollar for a filter, over the cost of Canon's front glass cost and service repair bill.I was lucky enough to have found this lens in mint - condition at a substantially lower price so I could afford these additional costs.
I bought this originally with the intention of using it for my real estate business. I ended up using it more for creative photography and landscapes since I use my TS-E 17mm and TS-E 24mm lenses for that mostly. So back to this lens. To be able to get so close and still be able to capture a scene that would otherwise be hidden behind trees if I had to step backwards just a few feet is priceless. To be able to focus on an item in the foreground and let the lens diminish everything behind it is magic. Its a nice alternative to using bokeh to separate something from the background but only works in certain situations. Using this ultra wide is great for situational photos to tell a story or in really tight spaces. Using this ultra wide is great for situational photos to tell a story or in really tight spaces. It’s also great for cropped sensor videos like the Canon 5d Mark IV. Yes at 11mm it real does some wicked things, stretching the objects from the parts closest to the camera and stretching the farther parts into oblivion. Looking down at your feet through this lens at 11mm makes it look like you stepped into an event horizon and you are suffering from some serious spaghettification, looking at a face and it turns them into a cross between Dobbie the House Elf from Harry Potter and Felonious Gru from Despicable Me. Obviously this lens is not intended for portraits. What it is intended for it excels at. It’s a cool lens if you need 11mm but it’s also autofocus and has everything from 11-24mm! This is like having several ultrawide primes in the bag. There is nothing else like it. The lens is well made like other “L” glass. The beautiful front element is protected only by the non removable petal hood. I bought this with the FotodioX WonderPana FreeArc XL Core Unit Kit for Canon 11-24mm Lens with 186mm Slim Circular Polarizer Filter and the results are amazing. The polarizing filter really helps protect the front element and is awesome for shooting water and especially for real estate, for those pesky glossy countertops and tables.
11mm is much wider than I expected and the field of view offered by this lens is staggering. It's so wide, it's easy to accidentally get your feet or a building wall behind you in the frame! Build quality is impressive, and the lens doesn't feel as heavy as some reviews make it out to be. The front the lens is wide, but overall it is quite stumpy and fits easily into my camera bag when placed on its side. Not being able to use a protective filter over the front element does keep me from pulling this out if it's misting or raining (not because it would hurt the lens, but because the mist easily gets on the lens and affects the photo), but I'm not worried about dust or dirt, as I keep a Rocket blower handy. Modern lens coatings are tough, and I'm not worried about the ... More11mm is much wider than I expected and the field of view offered by this lens is staggering. This lens is wonderful for capturing cloudscapes that would normally require multi-shot panoramic techniques. I find myself switching between this and the 100-400 II quite naturally for unique landscape perspectives. At f4 there is substantial vignetting - and I mean substantial, but it can be corrected in Lightroom or used creatively to focus the viewer on the center of the frame. I find this lens captures so much contrast in a high-contrast scene (using the 5DsR to capture sunsets with extreme brights and darks), that in Lightroom I have to pull the Contrast slider all the way back to -100, then use the Dehaze effect to bring back the detail. In doing this, I've found I can closely mimic or even slightly surpass the cloud detail and rendering I get with the Leica Q. This lens would likely perform well with multiple-exposure blending in these high-contrast scenarios, but I am not the sit-and-wait-with-a-tripod type. I would love it if Canon released a prime 11 mm f2.8 or f4 IS as a close cousin to this lens.
While my photography efforts have mainly focused on shallow depth-of-field zoomed shots (using 70-200mm), I purchased the 11-24mm in an attempt to expand out of my comfort zone. Below are some comments/observations (in no particular order) on my experience that may be helpful to others this is NOT a lens review per se. (there are plenty of better qualified sites for that): 11-24mm: interestingly, even though the subjects one may capture have been captured a million times before, there is a GOOD chance they have never been captured in such a wide perspective - therefore opportunities abound to take somewhat original perspectives never before captured J f/4.0: while conventional wisdom (discounting the advantage of image stabilization) suggests a one-over-focal-length ... MoreWhile my photography efforts have mainly focused on shallow depth-of-field zoomed shots (using 70-200mm), I purchased the 11-24mm in an attempt to expand out of my comfort zone. (there are plenty of better qualified sites for that): 11-24mm: interestingly, even though the subjects one may capture have been captured a million times before, there is a GOOD chance they have never been captured in such a wide perspective - therefore opportunities abound to take somewhat original perspectives never before captured J f/4.0: while conventional wisdom (discounting the advantage of image stabilization) suggests a one-over-focal-length for a fairly safe hand-held shutter speed, what I didnt initially appreciate is that when this rule-of-thumb is applied to a 11-24mm lens, the safe shutter speed is now in the range of 1/10 1/25 of a second (and stabilization only improves on this). At these (relatively) low shutter speeds it is not usually camera shake that is the concern as most subjects will blur regardless at these low shutter speeds. Therefore, in many low-light situations, these viable low shutter speeds can effectively negate the relatively slow f/4.0 aperture (at least when there is little subject movement). Subject: it goes without saying that capturing sooo much information in an image often makes it a challenge to have a clear subject and while conventional wisdom discourages capturing people with a wide angle lens, I find the wide angle adds an interesting not-often-captured perspective google Playboy Photographer Jarmo Pohjaniemi for great examples and inspiration. Flare: while wide angle lenses may be said to be somewhat more resistant to flare (by design), realize that in sunny outdoor shots or nearly whenever strong point sources of light are present, a wide angle lens has VERY a good chance of somehow/someway capturing direct or indirect light and thus a high likelihood of introducing flare (noting, of course, the built-in hood is non-removable). Whether good or bad, it seems often unavoidable and often unnoticed and/or hard to detect in the viewfinder - just be aware it lurks. Distortion/converging lines: while the lens is a phenomenal rectilinear lens, ensuring images are free of obvious distortion due to camera/lens angle is a major challenge particularly when both vertical and horizontal parallel lines are present! Keeping the camera/lens precisely straight on to the subject (perpendicular both vertically AND horizontally) is paramount. While this applies to all lenses, a wide angle lens really exaggerates the distortion (the raison detre for tilt-shift lenses!). It really takes very little misalignment to ruin an otherwise acceptable image. However, with that said, unless one has the time and ability (e.g., tripod) to get it perfect, perhaps easier and safer to simply introduce enough angle (horizontal and/or vertical) to remove any assumption of an intended correct image. Lastly, Cambridge in Colour has a good webpage on Using Wide Angle Lenses.
