A worthy lens!

After using the 18-135 STM, this lens was most definitely a step up in quality. What you give up in focal range you gain in sharpness, better contrast/color rendition and also much less chromatic aberration (I can still see some but it?s very minimal). The resolution I might add is excellent. I recently had to crop down a photo by almost 50% and it still looked great. No vignetting at all on a crop sensor either unlike the 18-135. It?s an all plastic build with metal mount but it feels pretty solid and doesn?t weigh much at all. I?m using it on a 7D Mk II and focusing has been quick and accurate for the most part (I shoot moving subjects with AI servo). I would definitely stack it up against the ?L? version (which I?ve used) and look forward to using it a lot more. ... MoreAfter using the 18-135 STM, this lens was most definitely a step up in quality. I bought this lens specifically for the EOS C100 Mk II, because only STM lenses work with DPAF continuous face-detection autofocus on that camera. The focus is fast, accurate, and nearly silent. I would rather just use the existing EF 24-105 f/4 L IS USM that I already have, but face-detection is not supported by the C100 on the L-series.To be honest, I really can't see any difference in image quality between the L versus the STM when comparing at the resolution of the C100, except for some slight Chromatic Aberration on high-contrast edges. For me, the benefit of continuous autofocus outweighs any other minor image-quality issues. So - while I would prefer to not have to buy a second lens with the same focal length just to support the C100, I can't blame the ... MoreI bought this lens specifically for the EOS C100 Mk II, because only STM lenses work with DPAF continuous face-detection autofocus on that camera. bad experience, I bought it open box online. When pick it up it was in a plastic box, no rear or front caps, it was scratch, the AF did not work at all. It was a waste of time, very disappointed. The store I pick it up want to charge me for returned that didn't work, but the store in The woodlands help me to not pay for returned it. I'm not recommend buy open box online.

Canon's 2016 homerun! Wow!!!
18 November 2016

I've a retired pro of over 25 years. I've been carrying an EF 28-300 L lens since I retired last year. I've had the best version if just about every lens you can imagine - so I know a thing or two about lens quality. This is going to be my only zoom to accompany a full bag of the latest non-L primes. L lenses are very tough, but once in a while they are not the best option in Image Quality. Well, I've owned 6 (yes, SIX) 24-205 F/4L's and I'll tell you - not one of them performed as well as this new version. Sharp as it gets entire image, amazing stabilizer, perfect contrast and color - immediate fast ACCURATE focus EVEN in near dark conditions. I shot photos tonight in a room with one 25watt bulb and a 30" flat screen tv on. Very dark by photo standards for apertures this small - EVERY TEST SHOT AT 1/5 SEC @ ISO 5000 (5D3) came out perfect! I literally could not believe it. WOW! With abberation/vignette correction activated the shots look like they were taken in a room with perfect photography conditions. My fears of not having constant f/4 are GONE. GREAT Bokeh when close to subject (almost identical to what f/4 delivers - (unnoticeable difference). If you're having trouble deciding between the two - I recommend the new f/3.5-5.6 HANDS DOWN! The numbers all say that the L lens is "better"...but after shooting with it; drawing from all if my experience, I wholeheartedly disagree. I wouldn't trade this lens for a brand new f/4L version. I'm VERY happy I took the risk going with this lens. I hope my experience helps you. Happy Shooting!

Incredible value

I bought the awesome Sony A7III from B&H in April of 2018. I wanted a 'go-to' lens. The obvious choice would have been the Sony 24-105mm, but it's very pricey. Fortunately, I also bought the Metabones V adapter so that I could use the Canon EF lenses I owned. I bought the Canon F 24-405mm STM (with macro!!!) for $600 bucks, way under budget. In fact, it absorbed the cost of the Metabones V adapter.I've now used this lens for 2 years. It exceeds my expectations. There is never a need to correct for vignetting and only minor lens correction is needed for architectural images. I don't do video, so no comment here, except that the lens will auto-focus with my Sony/Metabones V combo in video mode.IMHO, this lens earns a 'best buy' rating. It was a gift.
13 May 2022

I purchased this for my dad to use and only briefly used it myself to verify that it worked. It's not my L series glass, but I'd recommend it for anyone who's not hellbent on the sharpest possible images or fastest apertures. It's definitely well built and fairly quick to focus accurately. The IS is smooth and effective, and the zoom and focus rings are smooth. It's better built than I expected, comparable to my 24-70 f/4L IS USM, but not quite as fast or sharp. My dad is extremely happy with it on a Canon 6D.

Lightweight alternative to the L series lens,
24 May 2017

I use a Canon 5D Mk IV camera. This lens is a lightweight version of the L series lens of the same focal length range. It is also slightly smaller and much quieter when focusing, which the benefit of the STM technology. Compared to the series 1 (not the latest version) 24 -105mm f/4 L series lens, I find it to be equally sharp or better at 35 to 104 mm and sharper in the 24 to 35 mm range. Although the aperture is f/5.6 and not f/4 at the telephoto end, I do not find this to be a disadvantage using current low noise sensor cameras. The big advantage to this lens is that it is smaller, lighter and quieter than the L series lens. As a general purpose 'carry around' lens for use in good weather, this lens is superb. If you are a hardened professional, you may want to buy the new Series 2 L series lens which will take the harder use and last longer. For me it has proved a revelation, allowing me to pick up my 5D Mk IV more often and not worry about lugging around those heavy lenses.

Receiving and sending the lens
1 May 2022

Receiving and sending the lens was such an ease. Also, the lens was a blast. This was my first time using this kind of lens. Great wide range of wide to zoom. Plus it took away bringing 2 additional lenses on the trip. I will be referring you to everyone I know. Thanks for helping us make beautiful memories.

During the period I had the loaner, I was did some quick in-house checking how the image stabilization feature worked and was extremely pleased at the results. I know Ill appreciate now being able to still have the 24mm w/a end but now zoom out that additional 35mms to 105mm. If youre a Canon person you already know youll get reliable operation and highly competitive image results for the price category.Rex

great lens
23 March 2019

I have been using this lens foe only a couple of weeks but find it to be a really good lens - especially for the price. The AF is fast and whisper quiet. I am extremely satisfied with the results in my photos. The only complaint I have (and the reason for only 4 stars) is the location of the lock. it is very close to the grip and difficult to reach on a full size sensor camera. I am a fairly small woman and have trouble getting my fingers on the lock. I think it would be quite difficult for a larger person. Other than that very minor detail I highly recommend this lens!
