If you have the light this is a great lens at it's focal length. Light enough to carry around and remain conspicuous. Sharp center to edge and nice contrast. Best yet, it's not huge investment (thousands) where you can risk some weathers conditional sessions and reap the rewards of some great shots. A bit noisy focusing, apparently normal for this lens.

Canon 300mm f/4L IS is okay. Good thing I bought the CPS 2 yr warrenty. The lens would only autofocus into the distance if the lens barrel was manually moved closer to the infinity mark. There was a problem with the movement of a lens element during autofocus. It is still out for repair.

Was looking for something more versatile than a dedicated astrophotography lens/telescope, but no one makes a similar lens as this Cannon with an E mount for Sony and anything close was exceedingly expensive. Found this lens and using a Metabones adapter, the lens works very well with my full frame Sony camera. Images are sharp and the lens is faster than dedicated telescope lenses. Not a deal breaker by any means, but wish it had an external aperture ring. This lens can be used in fully automatic (aperture and focus) or manual mode. Manual aperture is done using the camera controls and focus with the focus ring. Image stabilization is impressive. Other than the price of filters because the face of the lens is quite large, I have found no real negatives, considering ... Pros: Strong Construction, Rugged, Nice Bokeh, Consistent Output, Fast / accurate auto-focus, Lightweight, Easily Interchangeable, DurableCons:Other thoughts: I don't think I've ever written a lens review before, but I read the preceding review and felt compelled. The person complained it was not a zoom lens so he or she) had to run around to get the right distance from the subject at the ball-park.I've been using a camera for over 55 years and spent over 40 years in TV and Film...still photography was mostly a hobby, but my dad was a photographer so I learned early and I had the use of his equipment since I was a young child. To me, zoom lenses were a novelty that didn't perform well, they just were more convenient than changing lenses for different distances (or composition). This lens is a bargain compared to other Canon 'L' lenses in every way. My 'L' zoom lenses for some reason have noisy IS systems, this is almost totally silent. The image quality is outstanding and leaves plenty of room to crop if the subject is too far (assuming it's used with a camera that is capable of resolving as well as this lens is at capturing detail. The built in lens shade is great and should be on every lens...I think it's a joke that Canon doesn't supply lens shades at all with other than 'L' lenses, and replacements for the L lens hoods are insanely priced (and the shiny black plastic is far from the ideal material for a lens shade - I use $8 [...] lens shades that screw into the filter threads rather than the bayonet lenses I get from Canon if I have room to carry them. No such problem at all with the 300 prime. The lens is so much lighter than my 70-200 f2.8 IS it's an absolute pleasure. The focusing ring is smooth as butter and the the minimum focus distance is just amazing. I love this lens and as I said at the beginning, I think it offers more bang for the buck than any other Canon 'L' series lens.My only gripe about the lens is it is not as well weather-sealed as some other 'L' lenses. But I've used it in light drizzle and in pretty extreme temperatures and so far, so good.To the other poster who complained about having to move around...either get a zoom instead (not sure Canon makes any longer than the 100-400 which doesn't compare IMO to this prime, or get a larger variety of primes....or best of all, enjoy the exercise .it's healthy for you!. :-)For less money he could get a 70-200 F4 zoom and an extender and have it all. For sports the IS isn't a big help - he should be using a monopod or tripod and for fast action on the field the IS does absolutely nothing. My $.02.
300mm is a really useful focal length for sports and wildlife especially on APS-C cameras where it is effectively a 480mm lens. It gives clean, sharp images with lovely bokeh. Reasonably fast F4 aperture makes it usable in low light for fast moving subjects at lower ISO ratings to avoid noise. Focussing is fast but the image stabilisation is not as effective as the newer 4 stop version on more modern Canon lenses and the IS is also quite noisy and clunky! For me that's not the end of the world as most of the stuff I shoot with this lens is on the move so IS doesn't help with that. When all said and done it's the image quality that matters and this lens delivers it in spades. It blows my tele-zooms in to the weeds in terms of ease of use and image quality. Little ... Little things like the beautifully weighted and geared manual focus make it a pleasure to use. It's one of my favourite lenses and I love the way you can use the shallow depth of field to really isolate a subject from a messy background. A bonus for me is that it works well with the latest Kenko Teleplus 1.4 and 2x converters. AF is retained even in quite poor light although it can hunt on low contrast subjects.
Pros: Rugged, Consistent Output, Lightweight, Strong Construction, Easily InterchangeableCons:Other thoughts: I bought this lens mostly to photograph wildlife and I have taken some great shots with it in the short time I have had it. The lens is light weight and easy to carry around in the field for long periods of time without causing fatigue. The IS is amazing and I can shoot without using a tripod in low light and still get clear, crisp photos. I have only used the lens in the auto focus mode and I couldn't be happier with it's performance. I wish I would have gotten this lens sooner than I did!!
First off I loved this lens so much, I had to buy it! Works beautifully with the 1.4x ext. and is very light but sharp, even wide open. AF is excellent, it does hunt a bit in lower light with the ext, but I am shooting on a crop frame. The MF ring is probably the best I've ever used, the built in lens hood is convenient, and shooting handheld is a joy. If you are on the fence, try this lens! Thank you Lensrentals for the extraordinary customer service!
I purchased this lens used from Adorarma not knowing what to expect. When it arrived, I was surprised to find it in perfect condition. If I didn't know it was used, I'd swear it was new. It even came with a hardcase and the manual. I was a little concerned when I first picked it up. This thing is heavier than my other lens, but soon you get used to it. I was worried I wouldn't be able to take good handheld shots. No worries, just set the shutter speed higher and shoot away. Pictures are stunning. Yes, it takes some practice, but once mastered, you will love the results you can obtain with this lens. Even at f4, its crisp, sharp optics. I'm glad I bought this lens.
Fantastic lens. I purchased this in the current situation to do actors headshots from a safe distance. Traditionally, this lens is for wildlife and sports but it an amazing portrait lens. Sharp, speedy autofocus. The f4 aperture gives a lovely DOF that makes subjects really stand out. I had a little test on some squirrels too to see how good it was for wildlife and it did not disappoint. The lens is well built and sturdy. It's not as heavy as I was anticipating which was a great surprise. All in all this was a brilliant purchase.
Wonderful lens! Even though it lacks IS, it is very usable given the quality results with newer cameras which handle higher ISOs very well. Construction is first rate and handling is a real pleasure. Very usable with the Canon 1.4x teleconverter. Image quality? It's an "L" lens! These lenses very much deserve their stellar reputation. Unbeatable
