I rented this lens to try and take pictures of the Christmas star. It was the cheapest to rent of the super telephoto options, so that was great since I wasn't doing any professional work with this lens. For 400mm it weight less than I would have guessed, so that was a bonus. I wish it had IS because even on a tripod I had trouble keeping steady enough to manually focus, but I was still able to make it workout. All in all I'm pleased. I just probably need more rental time with this lens to get used to it.

First, I should note that this is my first L series lens. I make it a point to shoot with an oddball setup - a used olympus E-M5 mk1, Viltrox EF-M2, and this lens... Let's just say that WOW! The detail from the RAW images is among the highest I've seen. Anyway, here are some pictures. The second bird picture is the first one (taken from about 3 meters away) cropped waaay in to show the detail retained and the third shows the bokeh possible wide open. I love to take it out and see the reactions from other photographers. This 400mm F5.6 Canon L glass is a time tested piece of kit. If you're on the fence, don't be - there's a reason why this 400mm F5.6 it's one of the most cherished lenses ever made by Canon.

This version has the latest coatings and as I have no experience of the earlier coatings cannot give first hand comparison, nevertheless the images are as good as the lighting and cameraman will allow, focusing on horses in a field 400 meters away and the trees on rising ground behind them at 550 meters pleasantly out of focus. Birds soft plumage pin sharp. I use this lens on a gimbal and tripod usually but have taken some very good hand held birds in flight. Cannot think there is a better 400mm x 5.6 available for IQ.

When setting focus limiter to 8.5 meters, super fast! 3. Using a really sturdy tripod, can get super-sharp results even with Extender 1.4x III on the 7D II !! This is actual focal lenght 560 mm, combined with cropfactor 1.6 = gets the same framing as using approx. 900 mm on a Full Frame... Rented this lens a couple times now, While a tripod/monopod is recommended, with practice and decent fast shutter speed you can get really nice sharp pictures. For me, weight is an issue so this lens worked out just fine. IS is nice too but i've had many keepers w/out IS. The only time i struggled getting sharp pictures is shooting moving subjects like birds at slow shutter speed especially in low light. Other than that, it's highly recommended.

Its autofocus is fast and crisp, the results are sharp and for the money usually asked for these used, this has to be the best introductory choice for someone interested in trying photographing birds in flight. The lack of stabilisation is not important since you'll be using high shutter speeds to freeze the bird movement. And IS adds weight, and is a complication not needed for moving targets. Many pros keep their expensive IS turned off since it can slow down AF times, the last thing you want with flying birds. I bought this for long lens photography with my Leica SL2 using the Sigma adapter. As the Leica has in body stabilisation and I use a monopod for most pictures, the absence of an image stabiliser in the lens is not a problem, and keeps the weight down. The results are excellent with sharp contrasty photos. Focus snaps in quickly with auto or manual focus. It is light enough to hand hold and is sharp at maximum aperture. Would I buy it again? Yes, it was a good decision.
I bought this to replace another lens that failed several years ago, so I have had plenty of experience with it shooting various wildlife, primarily birds for large prints, typically up to 36 inches on a side, using a Canon 40D, then a 60D.This lens is capable of extremely high IQ images. The best aperture is wide open at f5.6, f8 still holding up for critical work for 36 inch prints, including cropping, so it will really produce a highly defined 42-48" print if you are really careful in your technique.I consider this is a much better lens for use of fast moving small objects, such as small birds in flight, over the larger and much more expensive F4 or F2.8. F5.6 means you still have some depth of field at close range.The larger siblings are best used as tripod queens which naturally makes them not as responsive to quickly changing scenes in a 360 degree field, as happens often with wildlife.If you are seriously shooting sports or large animals such as deer and elk at a distance, the larger glass has an advantage, but really only one of two f stops.The only problem I had with this lens was an annoying problem with clear protective filters when I first brought it. I didn't get to carefully test it before a shoot overseas. It produced high IQ pictures in a quick field test before the trip. So I put a high quality UV filter on to protect the lens. Every shot was dead soft when I carefully reviewed them later. (Good thing I was being paid for other photography on the trip, not the bird pictures)I was very upset, as I lost many stunning scenes due to the issue. It turned out to be the filter, but not just that filter. When I tried to find a filter that would not act like a diffusion screen, I had to try over 20 filters to find one that worked. Ironically, it ended up being a cheap filter, not a B&W, or Tiffin, exc.So my one warning is be careful with filters on this lens.It a bizarre problem. I've never seen the issue with another telephoto, but I have seen it with wide angle lenses.
