It could be argued that 50mm is a less thrilling focal length – not wide enough for scenic views, nor long enough to compress perspective. Still, a 50mm lens is often the first lens that people buy when stepping up from a kit zoom lens, wanting to explore the shallow depth-of-field that the wide aperture allows. So I do believe that a 50mm lens will find its way into your camera bag at some point. It is sharp, the bokeh isn’t terrible, and the lens is affordable too. I think this lens would be a personal decision if you like the quality and the look that this lens gives you. fine details these lenses render at about f/2 aperture.

I have had this lens for about a year and a half and I primarily use it for blurring out the fence when shooting subjects through a security fence. It does its job well in that regard, offering great image quality however this lens is only good for static or slow subjects. The autofocus is slow and highly inaccurate with the best results taken in manual focus. Build quality is good enough although the autofocus motor twists and extends when in operation which can easily be damaged if you are not being careful. Overall still a decent lens, however given the inaccurate autofocus, the 50mm F1.8 STM may be a cheaper and more reliable option.

Fast and accurate focus. This lens is a classic that excels in portraits, street photography and landscapes. Yes, it's not clinically sharp wide open, but that's not the intent of this lens. It's a balance of vintage lens character with modern lens focusing. Recommended!

The image quality is good, providing clear details and decent color reproduction. The lens construction is sturdy, with a durable feel that instills confidence in its longevity. Autofocus is moderately fast and accurate, ensuring reliable performance for everyday shooting scenarios. It is a sensible choice for those seeking a well-rounded lens without the need for excessive features or excitement. It provides a satisfactory level of performance for its price point.
We bought a 5D Mark IV used and needed a lens. This was available and we both like 50mm so we picked it up. So far we are both in love with the image quality and versatility. Sometimes the autofocus hunts or misses the target. But in general it's fast and accurate and has helped get great images. It's great in low light and gets sharper if you close it up a bit. So far we have done portraits and people photography as well as a few days wandering around the city. It's lightweight and compact which is nice on such a big camera body. Definitely recommended.
The lens was fantastic. Had no trouble adjusting to my first time using a prime lens. Really enjoyed how the fixed focal length forced my attention on to composition more. The lens came well packaged and shipping was a breeze. The LensRentals team is fantastic - responsive, helpful, and easy to work with. Helped me work through figuring out a new delivery location and were with me every step of the way as we figured out the best option together.Overall both the lens and the company were exceptional. Will definitely be renting from them again!
I love this sense. I have the old stand-by 50mm f/1.8 which I have used for years. I bought this for the f/1.4 aperture and it doesn't disappoint. I shoot on an old Canon 5D Mark II and it works well. Autofocus is responsive and sharpness is awesome.Build quality seems little chinsy,, but forgivable at this price point. I dropped it while in TSA security check point at O'hare and it looks like it survived the 3 foot drop out of my bag. This is my new go-to lens for beautiful portraits.
Near mint is not how I'd describe a lens with a physically damaged focusing mechanism. Autofocus and manual focus both only work about 85% of the time if the lens is held perfectly horizontally. If I point it up or down that percentage drops to about 15%. The lens was well packaged and it arrived without damage to the box, but the problems were apparent the moment I removed it from the packaging. There is no way someone could reasonably claim they inspected the lens and decided it was near mint.
This was the first fixed lens I purchased and although I loved the image quality immediately, I was prompted to write this review four years later because in going through my image archive, time and again, it is the images captured with this lens that really catch my eye. I have subsequently bought some L series glass, so this 50 1.4 has been on my camera (80D) less frequently of late, but now that my archive review has reminded me, it'll be back on regular rotation. Especially excellent for flashless indoor shooting (I hate the irritation of flashes and the way they effect an otherwise relaxed social gathering), but also great in full daylight. The extra shallow depth of field is fun to play with, but the image quality is indiscernible (to my eye) from that of my ... MoreThis was the first fixed lens I purchased and although I loved the image quality immediately, I was prompted to write this review four years later because in going through my image archive, time and again, it is the images captured with this lens that really catch my eye. The extra shallow depth of field is fun to play with, but the image quality is indiscernible (to my eye) from that of my precious 70-200 IS 2.8. I've never used the nifty fifty (1.8) so maybe the extra cost for this one won't be worth it to some, but the (utterly non-scientific but nonethess striking) comparisons provided by my retrospective review of about 30,000 images taken over four years lead me to recommend this lens wholeheartedly to anyone who wants to inobtrusively capture intimate, butter-smooth images, particularly of humans in social/street settings.
Photog here. Bought expecting a great lens to add to bag, but either is damaged-defective straight from canon/package or is just THAT bad of a lens sadly. Wish I would have not bothered to buy at all. After using a couple months to make sure it wasn't just me needing to get used to the new lens, or something else, I am now 100% sure this lens is just defective/terrible. Almost every image taken with this is super hazy soft no matter my settings, lighting and everything. I've not had ONE photo from this lens be tack sharp like I can get with my 24-70 and 85mm lenses. I've even done side by side with images with different lenses same spot and lighting and the 50mm just doesn't work like it should. The Defringe on this lens is also the worst I've ever seen when photos ... MorePhotog here. The Defringe on this lens is also the worst I've ever seen when photos are in brighter natural light, or are taken from full body to pull back shots. The defringe can be so bad it's nearly impossible to fix in post using LR. sending back to canon under warranty to see what can be done.
