50 mm canon macro lens from asset-resellers

WoW! I'm new to DLSR's and having a "prime" lens in my bag was a great beginning. This 50 mm is fun to work with. As a macro lens...it focuses very fast on small subjects.. (tree frogs, flowers and insects.) I'm also using this lens to use in a light box for miniatures to sell. So FAR, I highly recommend this canon 50mm macro lens.

A decent beginner low-cost macro lens

I think this is a beginning low level macro lens. Focus ring is loose, not sure if that is part of the design or just the one I purchased. I think it was discontinued for a reason. It's not bad but if you are looking for a really good macro lens, don't get this one. This is my first so it will do for now.

This lens was indeed in mint condition. It was properly cleaned and packaged. It's way sharper than the Canon 50mm 1.8 II and STM editions. Additionally, it includes macro. This has to be one of the most proscenium lens for under $200 by far. Solid build quality, and optics.

Excellent entry-level macro lens
15 December 2012

This is an excellent entry-level macro lens. It only does 1:2 (1/2) life size out of the box, but this can be upgraded to 1:1 life size with the Canon Life Size Converter. For my purposes, its an excellent lens. So far, I've taken great pictures of my wife's wedding ring, the handle of a dental tool, etc. I haven't had enough time to get into nature with it yet, but all signs point to satisfying results. I'd definitely recommend getting a ring light or ring flash for this lens. The depth of field at maximum aperture is approx. 4-5mm, so a great deal of light is needed to take images of any scene deeper than that with f/16 or even higher resulting in better DoF. With my lens, the AF is noisy and relatively slow. This is not a USM lens, so this is perhaps normal ... MoreThis is an excellent entry-level macro lens. I'm using a dedicated 50mm f/1.8 lens for my normal photos, and this lens only as a macro. As with most macro lenses, the auto focus needs to be turned off and the lens manually focused, so the AF isn't an issue at all. If I hadn't already gotten a dedicated 50mm, this lens would probably be satisfactory in it's stead.

Excellent for specific uses
6 August 2021

This is a very old lens offering, but I bought it for a specific purpose - to use with my Polaroid slide duplicating gadget. My existing Canon 50mm 1.8 STM lens - for some reason, quit focusing on the slides and I could not resolve the issue. I tried using my 40mm lens with some success, but the images were unnecessarily reduced in size. I bought this in hopes the Macro capability would solve my problem - and it did. I also tried it out as a general 50mm walk-around lens on a Canon T7i and Canon RP. It was once good for that, but not so much any more. It takes nice sharp pictures, but the auto-focus is very slow by today's standards and hunts a lot. I also tried it out as a Macro lens, and here it did much better, much better than the 50mm 1.8 STM. I don't do that ... MoreThis is a very old lens offering, but I bought it for a specific purpose - to use with my Polaroid slide duplicating gadget. Excellent lens for the price
8 September 2020

Works perfect for my particular use which is copying old slides. I had been experimenting with using older Canon FD macro lenses and EOS adapter, but finally ordered the EF macro and it was worth it. Although used, the lens is in excellent condition and very much like new.

Glad I bought this 'portrait' lens!

Pros: Nice Bokeh, Durable, Consistent Output, Lightweight, Easily Interchangeable, Strong Construction, Fast / accurate auto-focus, RuggedCons:Other thoughts: Until I got this lens, I was using the Canon 'Nifty-Fifty'. This lens is much superior in that it produces sharper images and is ruggedly constructed. I use the lens mainly for portrait work and like to shoot f/4.0 - f/8.0 maximum so the f/2.5 wide open aperture is more than adequate for me. I get the super-sharp focus and detail I like. I add any softening during post-processing of the images.I am very pleased with my purchase. Don't understand why Canon stopped manufacturing it. If you are thinking about getting this lens do it now before the existing stock runs out.

Great source for older lenses
7 March 2022

The lens was clean and sharp. It appears to auto focus properly. It is hard to understand why Canon would discontinue such a valuable lens. Ebay is one of the most ready sources for this, and many other older lenses - and thus a valuable commodity for photographers

Older but a smart buy
4 December 2019

It might now be a few years old but this is still a lovely lens. Im not interested in its macro facility (although I have used it), it was the fact it has been reviewed as canons sharpest 50mm EF series lens. It is incredibly sharp. It might only be F2.5 but I shoot almost everything at infinity so this is not an issue. I shoot a lot of night stuff under bright lights and as the front element is small and a long way inside the body it generates almost no flare (as long as you dont use a filter) I think it is now my favourite lens. I paid 50 + p+p for mine. Incredible lens for a decent price. Every canon photographer should try this lens. It might not suit everyone but for me it is great.

This is the lens quality your Canon should be supplied with;
18 August 2012

I bought this lens because I was so disappointed with my 18-55 mm lens that came with my 500D. I'd had a Nikon D50 before and I had been quite impressed by the standard lens and especially the variable speed flash exposure. The Canon cost several hundred pounds more and did not give the improvement I expected with its metering in strong sun light and flash, Park cameras exchanged the body for me but there wasn't any improvement. I wished I had bought a cheaper body and spent more on the standard lens. Anyway I planned to buy a 'thrifty fifty' and see if it was the lens at fault after all and saw this lens. I read several reports which said it was very good but not quite as good as the 60mm macro but it was also a lot cheaper than the 60mm. I was nervous about spending more money after the disappointment of the camera and I thought I could buy a compact for the cost of this single prime lens but in a moment of weakness I decided to buy it anyway; then I nervously shot several snaps of coins, pens flowers and other miscellany to test it out against my disappointing standard zoom. 1. Firstly: It is noisy compared with the EFS (I haven't tried a USM) so noisy in fact that I was concerned something was broken but it wasnt, its just noisy compared with an EFS lens. However I agree with the comment about the noise: after a few shots I don't really notice it. 2. Secondly: The colour saturation in photos was much better than with the 15-55 mm; Ive read that apochromatic lenses focus all wavelengths more accurately so your get less colour distortion so maybe that is what is happening here but I just wasnt expecting such an obvious improvement in vibrant saturated colour. 3. Thirdly: It is noticeably much sharper and more detailed than the 18-55mm (maybe that is why the colour is better). 4. Fourthly: It is a fantastic portrait lens with an amazing bokeh (the background blurs so the focused areas really standout in sharp relief against the blur which can make a portrait look really good). 5. Fifthly: The range of 18-55mm lens is a really useful range, having a fixed 50mm prime lens makes you really have to think about what you are going to take a photograph of because you cant just zoom in and out. This lens makes you try harder and rewards you when you succeed. This is a good lens and this is what you need if you want to begin to explore how good your camera is but you dont want to spend 1000.00 on an L range lens. Now I need to find an equivalent wide angle. So, PROs.... This is the lens quality your Canon should be supplied with; it has macro capability and doesnt cost 1000.00. CONs.... It is noisy and an awkward focal length for general photography unless you take mainly portraits for which it is excellent. I'm happy I bought it and look forward to becoming a better and more satisfied photographer with it.
