This lens actually exceeded my expectations. Beautiful rendering for portraits, probably my favorite of any 85mm lens I've used. It isn't perfect, and shows its age as far as AF speed and longitudinal CA wide open, but it more than makes up for that in other areas. Also plenty of sharpness to actually use wide open at f/1.2, incredibly sharp by f/2.8. The rental copy and a dent in the Focus ring that seemed like it must have been from a previous drop or hard it at some point, but it didn't seem to have any impact on performance. After renting this I really just want to own one and use it full time.

I rented a lens to take pictures of my newborn nephew. My lens was not delivered when expected. Courtney went above and beyond to help me track down the lens, answer all of my questions, and make sure I had the lens long enough to get the pictures I wanted to. Its the nature of the beast, and time needs to be taken to ensure the most critical elements are absolutely in focus before releasing the shutter. Ive also seen comments saying to avoid f1.2 if the DoF is too shallow. That specific aperture size is the sole selling point for this lens, and theres no point owning a lens like this if youre not using it for its bokeh. Its here youll find another quirk. The focus ring has a huge range of travel, required for precise adjustments with such a limited DoF, but its usefulness for precise focussing is restricted by the fact its not mechanically linked to the optical assembly. It uses a focus-by-wire system to send input to the USM focus unit, and small inputs to the ring dont always translate as youd expect. It works but its not as quick to manually focus as it is with mechanically-linked USM. It also cant be manually focussed if the camera is sleeping, a press of the shutter is required to wake it up. Wide-open performance has a softness but this is entirely in keeping with the stunning bokeh. Its not a technical lens, its an art lens, and you dont buy something like this for its technical merit. Aside from the care required during focussing, if theres one serious shortcoming its the high level of lateral chromatic aberration present, and this shows up as green and purple fringing in high contrast areas. All lenses exhibit this to a degree but the CA shown here can be difficult to fully compensate for. Obviously this isnt a problem for monochrome images, and its not a deal-breaker for those prepared to work with its limitations. Should you buy one? Yes, if you want the ultimate bokeh and can commit to shooting wide-open. Thats the only reason to own this lens. If you dont need such an extreme aperture size there are a number of superior alternatives, primarily Canons own f1.4L IS which offers vastly superior low-light focus speed as well as image stabilisation. For absolute outstanding technical quality Sigmas f1.4 Art is another serious contender for best portrait lens. Finally, if technical quality is second to artistry for you then Canons old TS-E 90mm tilt-shift lens takes bokeh to another level altogether for a dreamy look that expands on the strengths of the 85mm f1.2L II. The 85mm is a unique lens, its not for everyone, it requires effort and technique to get the best from it but the end result can set it apart from all others.

I rented this lens and immediately fell in love with it and knew I had to get one. Yes, it is heavy but I love the weight and it's nicely balanced on my 5D IV and to me it feels like driving a muscle car. You have that very large aperture that in bright sunlight you can stop motion at 1/8000 at ISO 100 or you can stop it down just a bit and really get such nice sharp images. Yes, AF is slow and I probably did not need it but there are maybe 2 out of 10 shots I take with it that I just keep going back to over and over as the drop-off when it works and the right settings gives it this illusion that I just can't get with my other lenses. Unfortunately I had to cancel one of my shoots I had scheduled. The lens wasn’t working properly and it kept giving me an error message about cleaning the lens contacts. Unfortunately I couldn’t confidently shoot with it. So I had no choice but to cancel with a client. Later on that evening I had another shoot and it worked half the time and wouldn’t work the other half. It’s a great lens when it works but it was giving me a hard time. The tech I spoke to was very nice and we tried everything to make sure it would work properly. Unfortunately it didn’t.

I have been using lensrentals.com for many many years. Overall very happy. I have occasionally rented the 85 prime because of it’s frequent use. It was the first time Lens did not get here as per the agreement. Ended up driving a total of an hour and a half to get the Lens at FedEx center. It is however the second time I have rented this lens from you and it has under performed. I had to take many photos to get one that was not out of focus. used my 1DX. Which was just tuned up, through CPS. Absolutely love the 85 prime. So I’m buying one next week. Can’t take a chance on a big shoot like I had and have a Lens that under performs. Overall still happy with you guys. And I intend to use your services in the future.

I took a picture of a small house fly sitting on a post. Only a thin ribbon, maybe millimeters wider than the fly were in focus. Overall, I just LOVE the images this lens produces straight out of camera! Colors and contrast are simply fantastic. The bokeh really does have a 3D effect, and gives a very smooth transition from in-focus to out-of-focus. It is sharp, almost edge-to-edge even at f/1.2, and that f/1.2 allows once to shoot in near darkness.
Learn, learn, and learn! I can't stress it enough. Learn your gear. Do not buy this lens, spend 2 or 3 hours, or an entire weekend in your backyard, then, when you get back to your computer, complain about your pictures not looking razor-sharp. It does not work like that! Does the Canon EF 85mm 1.2L have chromatic aberration problems? Yes. Correctable? Yes. I correct mine in camera because DSLRs come with a feature that makes the correction if you choose to activate it. I shoot with a Canon 5Ds R, a very unforgiving camera; and I absolutely love it! 50 megapixels will teach you things about a lens that no book, classroom, or pixel-peeping critic can teach.
