After long deliberation - no regrets with this lens

I was primarily looking for about the same length at the short end, improved autofocus performance, and improved image quality.I did a fair bit of research and debated between this lens, the 24-70 f/2.8L, and the venerable 24-105 f/4L. In the end I could not justify the additional cost of the f/2.8L and the feedback online led me to believe that image quality across the range of the lens on the 24-70 f/4L is more consistent than that of the 24-105 f/4L.I tend to use this lens to grab photos of the ... MoreI take photos of youth and high school football games; I've been doing this for a number of years and have slowly been upgrading my equipment. I need a wider angle than I can obtain with the 70-200 I use to shoot the games. While losing a stop costs me the awesome bokeh of the 2.8, my initial impressions are that the f/4 isn't that bad with the right composition. Also, while the 2.8 would be great for night games, the improved ISO range on the 7d MkII more than makes up for that extra stop while the IS on the f/4 is helpful for handheld shots.Candid photos at a recent family bbq were very good too. I think this will easily become my default "walking around" lens.If I was doing this as a paid professional, I would have to think harder about going with the 2.8 - but for me, this lens delivers more than I was expecting and I am very happy I made the purchase.

I rented this lens to shoot a Veterans Day flyover from the backseat of one of the aircraft. The 24-70 turned out to be an excellent choice for this type of shoot. The auto focus performed flawlessly and the IS allowed me to shoot at slower shutter speeds to get the prop blur I wanted. I highly recommend this lens and greatly appreciate the quality of the lens sent to me by LensRentals. Been renting from them for years and I've NEVER been disappointed.

So the packaging for shipping was really good. It comes in a pelican case so it seems to be really safe. The big issue was that I planned to take photos on the beach with the lens's but when I got on the beach the internal glass fogged up for about 30 minutes. It seems like they sent me a lens that was not fully sealed so regardless of me wiping the inner or outer glass of the lens it was still fogged up. It’s because the high humidity of being on the beach but the camera lens should be sealed so that the inside glass does not fog up. The whole point of me renting the lens was for taking pics on the beach so it was unusable for that. Luckily my sister brought her Sony camera and we were able to use her camera for all the photos.

Good lens, when exposure is correct
19 June 2018

My first impression of this lens was that it is quite contrasty. This can be a good thing, but in my first round of tests I found it to be a bit unforgiving in the brighter areas of the pictures, which were blown out and lacked detail. In the next round of tests I took care to pay more attention to the camera's histogram and highlight warning to avoid overexposing the bright areas (this required several of the shots to be retaken with exposure comp stopped down a bit), and got much better results. Sharpness is good (not quite as sharp in the center compared to my 70-300L at 70mm, but sharper in the corners, which was quite impressive). Feels sturdy, colors are nice (when exposure is correct), and focus and IS are both very quiet. Fluorine coating and weather ... MoreMy first impression of this lens was that it is quite contrasty. Fluorine coating and weather resistance are both welcome features, as is the macro, which works as advertised. Hopefully these features will make it worth the extra money. During my tests I noticed that this lens seems to lose up to 1/2 stop of light compared to my other 2 lenses (sometimes auto-exposure settings were 1/2 stop brighter to get identical results compared to the other lenses). I don't know why.

Great standard zoom with a surprise
28 June 2015

Having moved in to full frame last year I bought this as a general purpose lens for the 6D to match the outstanding IQ that the 6D is able to return. I'm finding it as sharp if not better than my mk1 24-70mm f/2.8L but with the added advantage of IS which can hold a shot steady down to about half a second. The size is just right and gives a good balance on a 6D and similar sized cameras. The macro facility works but is a compromise and one which some reviews have pointed out. IS isn't quite as effective a very close range but with care and a tripod results are achievable making this a very versatile lens. Around the same time as I bought the lens a windows update knocked out my monitor colour profile. Once this was recalibrated I found that I had overcooked a lot of my images in post processing. The basic default profile in DXO optics pro was more than enough to pop out the colour and levels for dynamic looking images. This lens has indeed produced more straight out of camera keepers than any other lens I have at this range including the 24-105L and the often under rated 17-40L. The surprise came when I tried it out on my 7D mark 1. On the crop body the lens works as a 38-112mm in 35mm terms, still a very useful range after losing the wide end. It did however unlock new levels of sharpness and quality that my other Canon lenses with the exception of the 17-40L didn't achieve. Clearly the latest optics have a resoloution capable of driving the higher pixel density on the 7D sensor. Pixel level viewing (not advised by many but we still all do it!) shows impressive rendition of fine detail witout additional sharpening. On the 7D this lens outperformed the 24-70mm 2.8L mk1, and blew away the EF-S 17-55mm IS f2.8. It's a highly recommended buy for a 70D or 7D as well as a trusty hard working standard for a full framer especially now the pixel race seems to be back on again. There are a lot of pros out there who will need to stick with the f2.8 version just for the extra stop which the portrait, wedding, and sports shooters need to earn their living. For the rest of us the f4L line will never leave you feeling you have bought second best.

Rarely leaves my camera body
15 August 2017

I recently went on a trip and took a few lenses with me for flexibility. What I discovered during the trip was that this lens is basically the best walk around lens, at least that's what I got from it. It's lighter than the 24-70 f2.8 (all 3 gens) and is slightly less sharp than the mk iii. But that's a fantastic achievement for a lens this versatile. The IS was very helpful in low light situations with still/slow moving objects, but if you really need to stop motion for very low light situations, you may be better off getting a 2.8. As for me, I much prefer the compactness, lightweight, and IS for my general use. I was able to get great shots, from landscape to portraits. If your camera can handle high ISO well, it does pretty well in dark settings as well, just with a bit more noise of course. This is fast becoming my favorite lens, but be wary that it is not as inconspicuous as a fast prime may be. Excellent lens and optics, great sharpness, and minimal chromatic abrasion. Would highly recommend to add to any travel or day venture bag.

This was Canons flagship for many years
23 November 2016

When I purchased this lens, it was mistakenly represented by the seller as an IS lens. Unfortunately, Canon never made an IS version of the 24-70L 2.8, and even the newer version II still lacks image stabilization. I still purchased this lens because I knew all of the positive attributes that it had, and prefer it over the 24-105L f4 which does have the IS feature. This lens is clear and bright, has a 2.8 fixed aperture over the entire zoom range. You can still hand hold at slower shutter speeds in fading light with great effect. 2.8 also gives a nice bokeh. To me, the operating range of focal length is perfect for everyday use, and when I need extended range I switch over to the 70-200L f2.8 IS or the 70-300L f4-5.6 with its newer IS. And on a crop sensor body, you don't have to worry about any of the perimeter distortions that may show up.

Versatile zoom lens that still works on mirrorless!

Great versatile zoom lens. Good sharpness through range. Fast AF, good image stabilization, and handy macro feature add to the value of this lens. Works great even on EOS R mirrorless cameras with the adaptor.

Both lenses produced excellent colour, contrast and sharpness. I tested my results with some independent viewers and no-one could make a definitive choice of which lens they preferred. I must be lucky that my 24-105 is a good sample. In conclusion, the 24-70 is a very good lens but for me was not worth upgrading fro where I am. I was a bit disappointed.Wex took back the lens without question and refunded my money. I have dealt with them before and continue to find their advice and customer service utterly superb.
