Big Sensor Power in Small Form Factor

For the image result, price this Canon EOS M3 blows away the other similar and higher price point options. The camera is fairly light with a very solid construction feel in hand. What really got me excited is this camera is that you can purchase so much more and you are not dropping $$ + USD with susceptibility to motor and gears failing with a life time of cycling turning the camera on and off switch on to take a photo.I am beyond pleased with the images results: Vivid, SHARP, high level of detail, and solid dynamic range. I feel the sensor's sensitivity to lower light is amazing for its price. With increased ISO setting you get solid results shooting RAW and editing in post with LR.This camera is tech with touch screen and Wi-FI connectivity. The hotshot option which is a MUST provides the needed screen resolution to take accurate shots and saves battery life. One feature that could have been improved is how easily the back screen disengages and can be articulated out. Its easy to do this and I find myself clicking it back in - its doesn't pop out - i just easily unlocks itself from time to time depending on how you hold the camera.High performance in a sturdy, slim, small form factor. Happy photographer and customer. I waited several months and used this camera extensively before sharing a review.

My last one was the 7d with a full compliment of L series lenses, I've shot many weddings, races (cars and horses) and of course a million other subjects. I recently made the decision to get out of the large cameras and put the pro portion of my photography behind me. I'd been reading up on this little camera and decided to make the leap. I could not have been happier. Smart moves on Canon's part with this camera is the adapter ring which will actually let you use this mighty mouse with your big L series lenses and a hot shoe for your speedlight flashes - or a view finger (I have this as well). My only and I mean only gripe is the actuating back screen. It only moves one way, great if you want to take selfies or a low angle photos - but it really should be able to move to the side and flip or something to that effect. This would be an outstanding choice for a backup body for the pro/semi pro photographer or for someone like me who is experienced in shooting and wants something they can easily lug up a mountain or to put in a backpack and ride horses or motorcycles cross country and ultimately for even that person who enjoys photography and wants to take their knowledge to the next level, learning ISO, shutter speed and aperture values and what they can do when manipulated.

Supporting the lens with M3 attached is a must as the M3 body mount has no possible way to hold a Canon 70-200mm f2.8L, 300mm f2.8 or similar lens. User interface is much like other Canon digital cameras making the transition easier for those who have owned-used other Canon digital cameras. Much like other modern mirror less cameras today, it has a pile-O-features that the majority of users might never use. What is important, actual image making is simple once the camera has been set up. Highly recommended to add the electronic view finder or a viewing hood like the Swivi (bulky but fits good enough) normally used with DSLRs asit has the same problem with all view screen cameras in sunlight, mostly useless view ability of the image to be created. Really a bargain for what this mirror less camera cost relative to it's performance overall. Only time will tell how well it holds up and endures over the test of time.

Fantastic Value, Great IQ for Travel Convenience
19 July 2016

I purchased the M3 18mm-55mm lens kit, plus the EF lens adapter, the EVF accessory and an extra battery for under 800 at B&H. Traveled to upstate New York. Visited Baseball Hall of Fame, Corning Glass and Niagara Falls. Shot indoors, outdoors, day and night with the 18-55 and the 22mm (which I had). Untouched images attached. If you know Canon DSLR FF or APS-C bodies and have used 24-105 or 70-200 F2.8 or better L glass you understand a certain level of Image Quality you want in your photographs. Well this camera and lens combo kit will get you 80% of the shots you would normally get from the Canon DSLR L glass world. Add the 22mm f/2 and you will get slightly sharper images and better low light. Add the 22mm f/2 and you will get slightly sharper images and better low light. I tested the Sony A6300 with that 16-50mm kit lens and found the images too soft. The only lens that produced images that looked great on that body was the Sony Sonnar T* FE 55mm f/1.8 ZA Lens for 998. So I saved 1,200 by not buying the Sony A6300 plus the Sony Sonnar T* FE 55mm f/1.8 ZA Lens, and instead buying the Canon M3 and have the option to use my L glass if I really want too. Ultimately I was impressed with the convenience to shoot landscape sharp DoF, shoot interiors with people and get good skin tones, shoot soft with good color, and quickly over or under expose to adjust a second shot with the dial right on top, or adjust the shutter speed with a different dial on top avoiding the menu system. So when you see the picture in your mind, and know what you want to accomplish creatively, this little camera will give room to be creative. When you do not know what you want the camera has intelligent scenes and it will take beautiful pictures on its own merit. What it doesn't do is panorama. What it doesn't do well is focus in very very dark situations. 900 pictures taken in one week, for the price the kit lens is great. For fun the L glass was a kick but I got used to the convenience and thought less and less about the big glass.

Great Mirrorless Camera for a Newbie to Mirrorless
19 October 2017

I initially purchased this camera as an addition to my Nikon D70s, but more importantly, I purchased this camera because I wanted a smaller format camera to travel with that had all the capabilities as my larger format Nikon camera had. As a plus, this camera, also had features that I was looking for in a new camera purchase that my Nikon D70s camera didn't have. For instance, video shooting, touchscreen, WI-FI connectivity, a LCD screen that has rotation capabilities, were all major pluses in my book. The only downside is that I had a learn a whole new model - as I've been shooting with Nikon for YEARS. So, I was not use to my new Canon. But with some practice, YouTube videos and the user manual, I was able to get enough of a grasp of my camera. Though, I am still learning how to fully use it, I truly LOVE it. It is by far one of the best purchases I made for myself in a VERY LONG time. The images are crisp. The videos this camera also takes are pretty great quality - though obviously, not the best if you are comparing it to devices designed for shooting movies / films / shorts, etc. However, for what I need it for, the video quality is great. My only complaint is that I wish when I took a picture during shooting a video that it didn't stop the video and include the sound of the picture being captured while shooting. If it was just a seem-less shooting even while taking pictures during shooting it would be absolutely amazing. Beyond that, I don't have much complaints with this camera. It is easy to use with some practice and most importantly, light weight.I am a happy customer!

I purchased this camera as a sidekick for my 5D Mk II, something that I could carry around with the family and that wouldn't weigh me down. We're always dragging the 5D around to the beach, the zoo, disneyland, what have you, and it's just a royal pain in the keister. When the original M came out I thought about buying one but I wanted to give them some time to iron out the kinks before I did. Now the M5 is out and the M3 has gone down in price so I decided to pull the trigger. I couldn't see dropping a grand for the M5 when really the only benefit was the viewfinder so the M3 it was. I can say I'm thoroughly loving this little powerhouse. The APS-C sensor captures amazingly detailed and high resolution pictures that are on par with many of Canon's DSLRs. It is so small and portable, and with the adapter I can mount all my EF lenses which for the most part work perfectly. I have noticed some minor focusing issues, it can be a little sluggish but it gets the job done. I also picked up a little FD lens adapter so I can mount all my old manual lenses too! I also really love the NFC connectivity, which at first I thought was just a gimmick. It works great for transferring images, anywhere I'm at, right to my phone to post on social media or photo sharing. The only negative thing I can really say about this camera (apart from the minor focusing issue) is the flip out screen. It seems to pop out relatively easy and I could see it getting broken if I get careless. It's definitely a weak point and I'm sure Canon has improved upon that for the M5. All in all an excellent little camera for the price and a perfect companion for your DSLR. Positives: Compact size Light as a feather Extremely high quality images EF/EF-S and FD lenses with adapter (and pretty much any other lens can be adapted too) Near Field Communication (NFC) for transferring images to device Negatives: A little sluggish focusing EF lenses Flip-out screen is a little hokey

So What's NOT to Like?
1 December 2017

For the most part this is a great camera. I bought mine with both the optional electronic viewfinder as well as the EF lens adapter (great bundle price from Adorama).24 megapixels and all my EF lenses work great on this camera using the adapter. The electronic viewfinder is a must-have for me because I like to use older, manual focus lenses at times. The viewfinder eliminates the glaring sun problem the rear LCD can often create. The digital zoom feature, which allows for both a 5X or 10X view is GREAT for helping insure perfect focus every time.So what's NOT to like? Not much...but sometimes small is just too small. In the case of the M3 the rear buttons are too easily hit by mistake, especially the one on the bottom right. It's frankly hard to hold the camera and NOT hit this button. The buttons themselves are poorly designed in that being flush with the camera body they provide almost no feel so you find yourself having to look at a button to make sure it's really the one you want to push.I would prefer that the camera be just SLIGHTLY bigger...big enough to allow for GOOD buttons with GOOD feel. After all, this really isn't a pocket camera once you put a lens on it.My only other wish list item would be for the camera to have image stabilization built into the camera. Yes, thanks to the EF lens adapter I CAN use my image stabilized Canon lenses...but how nice it would be if ALL of my lenses, even the old manual focus ones, could get the benefit of IS. Sony (A7II) and Olympus offer mirrorless cameras that have image stabilization built into the camera body...and I wish Canon would do the same.

So far so good
29 December 2015

Based on 10 days of use and a few hundred images: No EVF without purchasing an accessory? Really Canon, what were you thinking? If the M3 was intended to be a serious entry into the mirrorless market (and a redemption of having made the M) an EVF should have been at the minimum included with the purchase of the camera. Thankfully, B&H/Canon offered the EVF accessory for a nominal cost when I made my purchase. I would not have purchased the M3 if not for the deal on the EVF accessory. Really Canon, what were you thinking? The camera so far works quite well and the first few hundred images have had good color and resolution (using Canon L glass so not all credit goes to camera). I have seen comments about the menus and some difficulty navigating them, but I have found the menu to be straight-forward and no more byzantine than any other camera. It will though take some practice to consistently use the small buttons on the back - they are small, but I believe with frequent use of the camera, they will not be an issue. That being said, Canon should make the buttons easier to feel - the M3 is a small mirrorless camera, so I guess one should not expect everything to be as easy to use as a full frame DSLR. I found the camera controls easy to use and had no issues except for the aforementioned small buttons on the back. The touch screen is easy to use and makes many function changes a snap. The accessories of the EVF and the lens adapter for EF & EF-S lens are in my opinion a necessity (especially if one already owns good Canon glass). The on camera flash is quite different and underwhelming at best. Like most higher end cameras with integrated flashes, using an off-camera flash is the way to go. Off-camera flash worked well on the M3 with no issues, BUT you lose the use of the EVF accessory since both will need to use the hot shoe. As I said previously, what was Canon thinking? The WiFi, once set up (Canon has two apps for this and the older one has been updated/replaced, but it can still keep trying to load when one tries to load the most current app) works well (so far). I have not been able to find any other way to remotely trigger the camera (except timer) than using the WiFi. I personally prefer a corded or electronic (non WiFi) remote as they seem to be relatively fool-proof (to a point). I did not test the range of the WiFi, but would expect it to be modest. Buy a spare battery, and currently there is no third party alternative, so grin and bear it. This camera is a bit of a power hog, but probably no more so than the rest of the latest electronic laden cameras on the market. I am interested to see, in the field, how long it takes to lose the cover plate for the hot shoe and other small parts. Leaving the lens adapter on the camera is the way to go (just other caps and such to lose)..... camera just seems somewhat accessory laden due to needing a lens adapter for EF & EF-S lens, having a accessory EVF (albeit in a cute little leatherette bag), an integrated flash of little or no use necessitating an off camera flash that requires removal of EVF to use. I look forward to running this camera, which at its current price is feature rich and well constructed, through the hoops in the field, especially for landscape photography.

The M3 is larger, feels good in the hands, has more features and better picture, and is still a light and portable B-cam

I previously owned a set of original EOS M cameras for use as video B-cameras on interview reels and corporate videos. I upgraded the B-cameras to a set of EOS M3's earlier this year and have been generally happy with the upgrade. The big pro's over the original EOS M's are that the M3's have a much better sensor, the LCD is now flexible (which is a lifesaver when using on a glidecam rig), and the in-camera adjustments are much more user-friendly. The M3 now allows for native focus peaking without the need to install Magic Lantern, which finally allows realistic use of manual FD lenses (the original M could use FD lenses with a converter, but without focus peaking, trying to pull focus on a tiny LCD was not realistic). I have found the peaking to be very accurate and the shots much improved on the M3. This camera seems to have more of that classic Canon midrange tone and matches up much better with DSLR shots than my original M. The battery life on the M3 is much improved over the original, though I still prefer aftermarket extended batteries. On the minus side, Canon still seems to lag the competition when it comes to video capture resolution. The Sony A7S and Panasonic G7 are in the same general class and both shoot 4k video in a compact, mirrorless setup, yet the Canon still tops out at 1080p @ 29.97fps. To shoot at 60fps, max resolution is 720. The lens selection is also rather slim, though with adapters, you can tap into the EF/EF-S range as well as classic FD lenses. It's still a huge improvement over the original M series. The M3 is larger, feels good in the hands, has more features and better picture, and is still a light and portable B-cam.

after using a standard huge canon EOS camera, i purchased this for travel and when i don't want to carry 20+ bulky pounds of camera gear in a back pack. the camera gives excellent image quality and though some may complain about the missing view finder that you have to add as an option, not having it permits the view screen to flip entirely 180 degree forward and with the added option of the view finder, you can angle the view finder up so you can get good low profile shots and selfies. it is a little slow with processing and has about the same battery life as a cell phone, but if you set it up correctly, you can get good processing and battery usage. (the view image duration, wifi, and using a large lens on the adapter with auto focus will drain the battery). Pros; image quality is exceptional compact size touch screen connectivity viewing options touch screen auto focus selection is extremely fast for getting the shot quickly. cons: slow processing for action and high speed shooting battery life (you need to set it up) average is 250 images per charges, set up lean and correct, you can get up to 500 images per charge. slow auto focus with eos ef lenses and adapter in low light and distance. with the adapter, manual focus, remember that, works best, (you do get used to doing it and can do it fast), after you get the range set for shots, you can then switch to auto focus to compensate for your slight position changes. little small in the hands at first but you get used to it. the buttons are a little difficult but if you use the touch screen, it is actually very easy. best use: as a second camera, travel and touring, a good always have on hand camera (fits in coat pocket), landscape and portraits. worst use: action or sports or anything that requires high speed shooting and fast motion. in low light, wildlife and children are a challenge unless you use the 22mm lens or adapted EF lens and follow the advice on manual/auto focus. overall.. get it... or the new m6 if you want the full flip screen option. i found it blew away the equivalent small size sony mirrorless cameras in features, quality of build, and potential since you can easily use all EF lenses.
