We just needed a scanner, did not want a printer, to save (among other things) magazine articles of places we would like to visit - when we are allowed again! I'm not sure if I can circumvent that but it's easy enough to delete that part of the filename as I allocate it to the appropriate region. I found it easiest to save them to one main folder and allocate after, otherwise I was forever searching/typing in new destinations. Good value for the money, works well.

Installation and set up was virtually hands free, Had a question for the help desk on how do I obtain a desk top graphic for the scanner and the answer was immediate and easy to follow. Only had the scanner for 8 weeks now and havent really used all its capability but those items Ive used work perfectly.Scan to e-mail easy, scan to word or photo package easy, scan to PDF easy. Colour or black and white (Grey scale) all ok.There is a bit of time used up while the reader elements heat up each time you scan an item, but its easy to get used to. Very quiet in operation, uses the power from the USB port so you dont need an exta power socket outlet. Couldn't do the installation until I had the scanner connected, but that's understandable.Simple scanning documents and photos is a breeze. If you want the highest resolution you have to use the 'Driver' option in the start screen. And if you want resolution above 600dpi, you may have to go into preferences and select the option to allow large files. 4800 dpi is, of course, rather slow. But you won't want it often unless you have very specialised needs.I haven't tried scanning slides. Ordinary white paper looks white.The computer screen displays a 'thermometer scale' indication of how long the job will take, but it has completed every time I used it when the scale reached about 10%. This is not a problem but I would like to see a software update for it anyway.I'm using a 2019 MacBook Air running OSX 10.14.6

I bought this to replace the Epson flatbed that skewed everything. The Canon is similarly slow but at least it is better made and produces good results. Note: it's fast enough at 300dpi but slow at higher resolutions. At 600dpi it seems to pause halfway through the scan, possibly doing a buffer flush, which makes the scan take even longer. The software is perhaps not as configurable as the Epson but I can achieve what I need through setting up a "custom scan". The scan results are sharp and accurate, which is the most important thing.

It worked and then Canon stopped support Mac OS

I bought this scanner three years ago to scan illustrations for my first illustrated kids' book. It worked well and made the best reproductions until one day it just stopped communicating with my Mac. All I can find on Canon's out-dated website is that it is no longer supported beyond Mac OS Catalina. As a long-time Canon user and supporter, I'm furious. they no longer get my support. Very bad.

Nice, efficient scanner. Good upgrade from ten years ago!

To be fair, I was using an old "all-in-one" printer to scan photos, and it took two passes to actually scan the photo in (preview, then scan). Therefore, any upgrade would be worthwhile. After contemplating more expensive products, I am happy I went with the Lide 400. The push buttons on the front really work! I can instantly print out a scanned document, scan a multiple page document as a PDF, and auto scan photos. If I have an album of family photos, I can take four of those at a time, hit auto scan, and they will instantly save as four separate jpg files! When I'm done, I unplug the USB, lock the cover using a slider beneath the scanner, and click it in place vertically on the included stand. It takes up so little space that way!

Price versus quality is great.

For the price this is a great scanner. The resolution, even in color mode, is exceptional. As well this scanner is designed to scan other than single sheets. The lid is designed to scan books and other documents much thicker than a single sheet. In addition the power is derived from the USB cable so portability is great.The software requires some playing around with. Not at all obvious where scanned files are placed on your computer as an example.

Scanner works great

I have used this scanner for a few hours to archive academic papers and handwritten notes. I like the size and functionality. For big documents I would use a scanner at work for multiple sheets but this device is compact and works great.I didn't use the supplied CD of software but downloaded direct from the web - instructions for this are included.Apart from the compact nature and ease of use, the device saves desk space by 1. including a vertical stand (I'm not currently using this) and 2. it doesn't need a power supply (separate) as it powers from the USB.For low volume this would also serve to do copies as the software can send the scanned file straight to a usb or network printer.Works great with notetaking software such as Evernote, OneNote etc.

With effort, it works in Linux. nice looking, too!

The stand up clip isn't super trustworthy, it falls off even though it has been 'latched' in place.I use Linux, I needed to install a GIT backend (look for the Rolf Bensch SANE GIT on Launchpad) because although this is "supported in Linux" by SANE, the stock SANE driver wouldn't recognize the device. Work very well with MacOS

That is fantastic! $99, for a 4800 dpi scanner? Bro, if you need a scanner, this is the one you will definitely buy, before I actually get it, I thought that’s just a 300-600 dpi normal one, but it’s not! It’s canon! Canon never makes me disappointed.
