I don't think these are things that would detract people form purchasing this lens, but they are things that a potential buyer should be aware of, as it could possibly lead to a fair amount of disappointment if these issues are discovered post-purchase:Obviously, the entry price is quite high, there's no way around that fact. This wouldn't be as much of an issue if it weren't for two things: no IS and presence of chromatic aberration. No IS is probably primarily due to the sheer size of this lens (aka glass it has to move/use), so I can understand it not really having it built in. You would just think that for this price, Canon would find a way to incorporate it, seeing as they are able to do so for almost every other lens they currently have on the market (and I'm sure there will be an updated version eventually with it available). Again, this isn't too much of an issue, primarily thanks to f/1.2, which allows to shoot pretty easily in low light settings.What I have a harder time with is the amount of chromatic aberration. It isn't atrocious, but it is definitely still present. This may be a non-issue for some, but I'm not a fan at all, and it always jumps out at me. Granted, its generally easily revolved by removing it in post, but I was still surprised to see it there, especially when all of my other L series lenses (including two other primes) do not have this issue at all.The weight of this lens is something that should be taken into account as well. I'm an early 30s, athletic male, and even I get tired of carrying this lens after a few hours. This is definitely not your "grab and go" nifty-50. I have used it on different day trips since getting it, and although I can do so, my wrist/elbow aren't a huge fan by the end of the day. Again, not a dealbreaker for me personally, but something that people should be aware of if they plan to use this lens as, say; their primary travel lens.Finally, the focus is noticeably audible. Obviously, Canon wasn't able to use their nano USMs for such a large amount of glass, which isn't an actual issue until you need to film something. I am a photographer first and foremost, but I do enjoy shooting the occasional video. Although the video produced is as equally impressive as the photos, don't plan on using the sound from the footage, unless you want to hear the constant focusing "clunks" from the motor (alternative would be to use an external mic). Again, not a big issue for me at all, but it may be for others.All this said, this lens is phenomenal, despite its few drawbacks. The quality of the images it produces are worth the entry price alone, as it truly feels like a magical lens! It has now become my "constantly-on" lens, only to be swapped for lenses based on intended use (ie telephoto, macro, wide-angle, etc...).The entry price may hurt for a while, but it will quickly fade into a distant memory once you start capturing truly magical shots thanks to this lens. Do yourself a favor, and just buy it, and you too can partake in its glory! : )

Having done quite a bit of research I bought this lens with preconceived notions.Afte ra month and a thousand photos I am beginning to see what this lens truly is. As advertised it is an awesome portrait lens. The bokeh is fantastic and does separate the subject from the background. Best taking head or head and shoulder shots but great for so much more. At f1.2 it is a single person or with proper positioning a group lens. But, DOF is shallow (how much depends on distance of course). It is also great for photographing single objects. I had a 5D Mark IV that I used primarily for nightscapes / street photography for years. I got the EF f/1.2 50mm to shoot with and instantly fell in love with it. The buttery textures, delightful bokeh, gigantic aperture... I loved pretty much everything about it.I expected the RF f/1.2 50mm to be pretty much the same, but it absolutely blew me out of the water. It had all the best parts of the EF 1.2 but the biggest difference is that it's TACK sharp at f1.2. I was stunned at the difference in quality. This lens is an absolute beast and when paired with my R5's AF systems, it's a match made in heaven. Sooooo worth the $$I haven't had the chance to take it out for night shots yet, but I attached a picture I took at max aperture at an aquarium the other day.
The RF 50mm f/1.2 lens is terrific. It renders bokeh beautifully and is a dream to shoot in low light. The 50mm focal length is versatile; I used it for both portraits and as a walk-around travel lens. This lens is sharp (but shallow) at f/1.2.I ordered this lens on a last-minute whim before leaving on a holiday trip. LensRentals got the lens to me earlier than expected. I have long since loved shooting at 50mm; it is one of the most versatile focal lengths in my humble opinion. You can shoot stunning portraits with the most beautiful, dreamy backgrounds with this lens. The natural perspective coupled with its beautiful rendering makes such a pleasant image every time, and the color rendering and contrast of this lens is exceptional. The lens is a beast. It's massive, weighing in just over 2 lbs. When I first pulled it out of the box, I was a little disappointed, rather than awed, with the size and weight. I put it on my camera and immediately questioned whether or not I could live with the size and weight. If you're looking for a discrete lens, this is definitely not it. I also own the RF 50mm 1.8, which ways less than a feather next to this lens. However, after shooting on it for a few days, I grew to like the weight and balance on my R6. It's still really heavy, but not in a way that takes the joy out of shooting with this lens. It really is a joy, and as you start seeing your images, the weight quickly becomes an afterthought.Another drawback, for me at least, is the way the front element moves forward and backwards inside the barrel when focusing. I know that the lens is weather resistant, however, I still wouldn't feel comfortable shooting with this lens on a beach, for example, because I feel sand would inevitably get caught inside the barrel. I wish Canon would have opted for a fixed front element, such as the Sony 50mm GM. For this reason, I purchased a quality B+W UV protective filter to fix on the front of the lens. Using a quality element in the front, you won't see any degradation in image quality, and for me at least, it gives me more peace of mind knowing my lens is further protected.Lastly, it's not a obnoxiously loud focusing lens, but it does make a noticeable noise when focusing all of that glass. So for video, you're definitely going to have to find a work around for that.All in all, I still stand by my headline that this lens is a masterpiece. The images will speak for themselves and you will not be disappointed, if you can live with the small list of drawbacks I've shared. Which in my case, I can.
