Best Canon Portrait Lens

This RF 85mm f1.2 DS is the best portrait lens I’ve ever used. I had owned the “original” Canon EF f1.2 and newer 85mm f1.4 IS models, but none of those can match this new RF lens in terms of AF speed, bokeh, and sharpness! I was torn between the regular 85mm and “DS” version, and I’m glad I went with this one. The first two, quick pictures I took for my daughter with this lens got a grin on my face right away. Never had I took a quick portrait snap of an “active” kid that would satisfy me in every way like this. This lens is an awesome addition to every portrait photographer, especially when paired with the new Canon R5!

I had this lens for a few weeks to decide to move from Nikon to Canon. It was used with an R5 in swimming contests and portraits. This combination exceeded my expectations with a wonderful bokeh and low light performance. This made my decision easier. AF is fast and accurate, better than anything I used before. I recommend this lens for portrait, sports and work photography..

I struggled between the DS and non DS version. Wasn’t to excited about losing 1.3 stops of light. For me I will be using this lens mostly outside and at f1.2 on bright sunny days my shutter speed is at 8000 or under. Had I purchased the non DS version I would have to close the aperture which defeats the purpose of getting that dreamy bokeh. This lens is stated to be even sharper than the non DS version so I went with this one. I purchased the RF 50 1.2 to handle the low light scenarios if needed. Absolutely love this lens

Fantastic

This maybe the best lens for portrait. The 85 focal length is great for photographers to communicate with their model. The background bokeh is beautiful and plus the DS filter in the lens, the smoothness is the best among the other non DS portrait lens. However, it would take about 1.5 stop exposure due to the DS filter. So be careful when you shooting in low light situations. I personally use this lens more in studio and I like it so much!

Maybe the best ever
5 March 2022

I'm incredibly satisfied with this lens. I wanted to mention a couple of points. First is that the DS version is actually almost 2 stops slower than the regular version. As an example, if your exposure would be 1/8000 2.8 with the non DS, your DS exposure would be more like 1/5000 or so. This is a great advantage. What it means is that you DO NOT NEED AN ND FILTER TO USE THIS LENS IN BRIGHT DAYLIGHT as you would with the non-DS version. On another note, don't put a filter on this lens, because something in the way the filter interacts with the DS just makes it look dull and ordinary. That is all.

Otherworldly images from the last word in portraiture lenses

I fully and happily admit to being addicted to bokeh and have owned every previous iteration of this cannonball lens. This one...the 85mm f/1.2 L DS...is like a dream, both in its performance and its results. The depth of field is razor-thin, something that is simply a learning curve issue. Once mastered, the image is spectacular and the bokeh is simply jaw-dropping. It's a heavy lens, but not too much so. I like the heft...it feels solid. Yes, it's expensive, but if you can swing it, I feel strongly that you will be very happy with it.

Smooth!

I was very impressed by the original RF 85 so decided to give the DS version a try. Not disappointed. The bokeh looks much smoother, but the highlighted areas are slightly smaller. Really helps with busy background and makes the in-focus subject pop. I think now I like it more than the non-DS version in spite of some light loss wide open (it's about T/2.3). You won't get this kind of rendering from any other lens. I used to fight busy backgrounds in Photoshop with Gaussian blur - not anymore - this lens delivers!

So Sharp with perfect bokeh
23 August 2020

As a wedding shooter I was looking forward to this lens to emphasize the subject outdoors in mixed lighting conditions. Beautiful creamy soft backgrounds even with hard edged lights visible. More in-camera refinement with less retouching improves workflow. Combined with the EOS R5 camera and eye tracking, I rarely ever find an out off focus image - even wide open. Heavy but well worth the extra weight when the images are so good. Definitely a keeper!

This. Lens. Delivers.

I was on the fence for so long about which version of this lense to purchase...The Regular 85mm 1.2 or the DS Defocus Smoothing) version. I struggled with the 1/3 loss of light due to the coating which makes The DS version Special. Guess what? Its so small you dont even notice. And the result is like...SPECTACULAR. As a professional it's the subtleties that make all the difference. And sometimes that difference can seal a deal, it can please a very important eye or simple Capture an image in a manner that is so stunning you forget how much you paid for the lens. If you want to know if this lense is worth the hype? It is. Buy it, you wont regret it.

Versatile, High-Precision Lens
10 June 2022

This was my first lens for my EOS R5, and after a year of use, it remains my favorite. It pairs what might well be the sharpest image you can get on a full-frame sensor with incredibly smooth and controlled depth of field. Like all RF L lenses, it is hefty, but I find no issue carrying and shooting with this lens on long days, admittedly not in any professional context. Despite its physical and optical intensity, I find this lens very relaxing to use. I have to imagine that one of the two L 85mm options belongs with every R5/R6.
