I opted for the less expensive RF 85mm and I am very impressed with its sharpness and colors. I tested the lens shooting some still life, one photo is attached here. As an elderly photographer, keeping the weight of my gear down is very important, so this lens is best for me. I highly recommend ignoring the nay-sayers who tout the "L" lenses because this lens is superb.

The lens is sharp and with good colors. It hunts for the image a little but is acceptable. It gets stuck in a focus spot and the work around to disengage out of that focus lock spot is to turn the camera off and then on back again. This will make the focus lock to release the previous focus spot and start focusing normal. The lens is robust but plastic material. Not weather seal so it will not go in adverse weather condition or at least without any protection. Is slow in focusing put that is an advantage because it makes the photographer slow down a little. The weight is fantastic and feel good in the hand.

I bought this as a portrait lens as I used to use a Canon EF 85mm F1.8 on my old camera for portraits. This RF 85mm f/2 is super sharp and well worth the investment. My wife recently said it was “too sharp” when I used it to take portraits of her. How can a lens to be too sharp

Pros: A great prime at this focal length, with IS and a settable range of distance settings to choose between. Sharp as a razor blade, with a good drop off when working at f/2.8Relatively light weight compared to my 24-105 workhorse, making it quite easy to hand hold and manupulate. Good for street photography and portraiture.I have not yet explored the bokeh but at f/2 I expect it to be very good, although the silly prices for the f/1.2 would be nice to compare with.Partnered with my R5 it looks like its a keeper, and may stay attached for a long period.Cons: A little slower to grab focus than I had expected as indicated by various youtube accounts.Does not come with a lens hood, so buyers need to purchase that and the UV & Circ. Polariser if they need them (I do).
This 85 mm lens is sharp with great bokeh. It is lightweight, which is a hugh plus. This will be my primary portrait lens.
Extremely good value for the price with fast auto focus, excellent sharpness, very good bokeh, and excellent build quality. While there may be others who disagree I personally really like the new build quality of the RF lenses, both "L" and "non-L" varieties. They are lighter with the use of new plastics and the quality of the plastics is very good and doesn't feel cheep to me. This is not a true macro lens as it only focuses to 1:2 or 1/2 life-size but this is a "bonus" feature of this lens. The only negative thing that I have to say is the same old gripe- no lens hood with the non-L Canon lenses and it retails for $70! Are you kidding me?!!! While I was able to find one for $40 that's still way too much for a piece of plastic! Come on, Canon! When will you learn?!
I can't complain about the quality of this lens considering the fact that it's not an L series, got a nice feeling of touch and you can feel the quality of the build too. Razor sharp as you can expect and the AF is very good and the Manual F ring is also has that good feeling to it. Stabilization is a very very good additional feature to it. The Macro function is also pretty nice of a non Macro spec lens. The only let down is the absense of weather sealing which makes it a bit tricky to use in The Netherlands :). All together: Great lens
The extras that come with this bundle are a nice addition. They're not the highest grade, but they're free so who cares!?As for the 85mm STM itself: I think it's a great value. The 1:2 macro reproduction is a nice additions to this lens, plus the stabilization rated to 5 stops is cool too. The lens has a solid feel, too; my EOS RP is basically just along for the ride. Tests done on this lens show that it's a solid performer and my real-world experience has been good so far. I definitely recommend it.
Great lens. Sharp quick focus. Only issue is it focus hunts in extreme low light. Awesome portrait lens.
I recently bought the Canon EOS R and turned my Canon 80D into my back up camera. I bought the 85mm f/2 to go along with the new camera. I love it. The images are sharp and the macro is super cool. This is the only RF lens I bought and may be the only one I need. Very happy with my purchase.
