Once you push that little switch, the flash pops up out of the camera. This in my opinion, is great because it actually keeps the flash protected.Another awesome feature is that the screen where you see what you are taking a picture of, can actually fold upwards, so that if you want to set a self timer and take a selfish or a group photo, you can still see what you are taking a picture of and you can see whether or not the camera is getting everyone in the picture. If you have something to sit the camera on, or a tripod to use, this function, will actually allow everyone to be in the picture and you do not have to worry about finding someone to take the picture for you. This to me, is one of the greatest features ever. Especially since I have been places with people before and wanted a group picture, but either no one else was around to take the picture, or I was I guess too shy to ask a stranger or was worried it might be an inconvenience to that random person. Now with this camera, problem solved.Another thing that makes me in love with this camera, is that there is an app you can download on your phone that allows you to transfer pictures from your camera to your cell phone and you don't even need internet to do it; you only need a smart phone that currently has data service. This allows me to quickly and easily send pictures to other people or share them on social media. With the features I listed and the many more I'm sure to learn about on this camera, I will definitely be getting a lot of use out of it.Whether you are a novice or a pro, this is a camera I would recommend to anyone that likes taking pictures and I officially think this is the best camera I have ever owned.

Excellent.

Early days yet, I have only had the camera a week or so but have used it a couple of times. It is reassuringly well built and works like clockwork. Wanting to replace 2 other cameras, I tried to incorporate all the good features, from those two, on my new one. A tremendous zoom, point and shoot, reasonably small in size - I'm not a photography anorak so the camera will spend most of its life on "auto". I will be interested to note the picture quality once transferred to a laptop. Time will tell but so far so good.

Fantastic pocket sized camera that more than meets my needs. The auto-focus does struggle a little in lower light at the highest zoom though. The tilting LCD screen enabled taking a selfie (not something I do regularly) much simpler. Also, the wiFi connection to the phone disconnects very quickly - there doesn't seem to be a setting to change this - and I'm yet to get the "auto download to phone" feature to work.I found the wrist strap that comes with the camera is too long: I've had to tie a slipknot so that the camera doesn't hang so low and feels secure. But, even with these niggles, I'm very pleased with this camera.

It would be 5 stars but…..
12 March 2024

We would have given it 5 stars except that Canon has not updated its software so we cannot use the Bluetooth or WiFi connection with the MacOS 14.3 we are using – I have no interest in sending pictures to my iPhone. Now, as in the past, we just download to our iMac through a cable. We love the camera, although it took a little time to get used to the differences from our earlier SX160 IS. We have used Canon cameras since I bought an FTb in Tokyo in 1974, and still have that and my A1 and lots of lenses. We went digital in 2012 when the SX160 IS was the last Canon camera that used AA batteries rather than expensive rechargeable ones.So far, the quality of pictures has been the equal or better than on the SX160, and when I learn the added features on this camera, it ... MoreWe would have given it 5 stars except that Canon has not updated its software so we cannot use the Bluetooth or WiFi connection with the MacOS 14.3 we are using – I have no interest in sending pictures to my iPhone. When it was working, I wasn't desperately happy with the focus when using the zoom lens. It wanted to focus on everything apart from what I was trying to photograph. Not good when I wanted to snap birds and insects. My old sx430is superzoom is far superior. It was not a cheap camera and I expected better. On the plus side, it was lightweight. Personally I would not buy another one but sadly there aren't many compacy zoom cameras available. Hopefully the camera will be returned soon (nearly 3 weeks now) and it'll be fully working....If not, I'll be back to Curry's for a full refund. I wish I'd known about their 30 day policy as I was only a few days out but the problems began very soon after purchase!

The ultimate camera for beginner dummies
13 December 2023

This is the ultimate camera for beginner dummies like me. I wouldn't know how to work a pro SLR. It is super easy to use on the 'Automatic' option. The 40x zoom is amazing for a camera this size and weight. I have been advised not to use the digital zoom, because it impairs image quality. The adjustable screen is great. The lack of a touch screen is a clunky disappointment in this day and age, but it is not a deal-breaker. I am such a dummy that I can't easily find my stored images to view them on the screen. Perhaps they could have made that easier for us dummies. Overall it is a stunning piece of kit.

To Be Useful, Great Magnification Requires an EVF

I replaced a PowerShot A550 with the SX510 HS. When the SX510 started giving me trouble, I considered getting a $1000 phone with a great camera or a decent pocket camera for half the price. I opted for the SX740 HS and feel the image quality is a step down from the older Canons. Everything looks like AI assisted digital zoom. Whether wide, zoomed or in between, there's no detail. Focus is soft. Edges have an AI smooth, vague crispness like older cell phones. It's also less intuitive to use.Close up focus is sllllooooowww. I missed tons of shots waiting for the camera to focus. If you stop the lens in increments before you get to maximum zoom, it's more likely to eventually focus. I missed tons of shots waiting for the camera to focus. If you stop the lens in increments before you get to maximum zoom, it's more likely to eventually focus. If you zoom to the subject rapidly, the lens toggles between close blur and wide blur before settling on wide blur. The zoom range is phenomenal, but optics are not. There's no detail. Bricks, grass, hair, etc, become graduated color blobs.Pressing the shutter takes a bit more pressure than I'm accustomed to. It causes more shake than usual with slower shutter speeds. The first time I used it, I thought I was taking photos and video but hadn't pressed the shutter hard enough. For the price, I expected better optics and user experience. I never expected this camera to be a replacement for my professional equipment, but I expected it to be as good as my older, defunct PowerShot pocket cameras.I was on the fence about sending it back so I re-shot a few scenes I'd done with my old powershots and took it on vacation, which is why I originally purchased it. The deal breaker wasn't the inferior sharpness, it was connectivity problems. Instead of simple transfer by cable, you have to pair the camera with your phone or computer every time you change networks. The camera disconnected frequently while I tried to transfer files. Restarting the camera helped the first few days of my vacation. By day 5, I couldn't get it to resume transfer of that day's photos no matter how many times i re-started. Transfer by cable isn't an option for this model and I didn't have a card reader with me. I thought is was just a network security problem that would be over once I got home, but it wasn't. I spent hours pairing, un-pairing, pairing again and looking for (non existent) information on how to transfer by cable. Eventually, I hooked up an old printer with a card reader and transferred the remaining files that way.If sharpness and cable connectivity isn't important to you, you might like the camera. However, it's a big deal to me so I returned the camera and I'm back on the market, looking for something sharp, fast and small.
