Given that is is a Canon lens on a Canon body, the calibration was super simple.The autofocus is superb, but don't expect to go from a 400m target immediately to refocusing on a 5m target. Step it closer incrementally or use the focus ring to get it close then use the auto. Could there be a technique I'm missing? Probably. That's the joy of learning. The image stabilization worked without issue. Don't forget to turn it off when using a tripod.As it was pretty much guaranteed to rain, I kept my kit in a rain sleeve. Additionally, I used a ProMediaGear monopod with a ball head as the lens, like the 150-600, is a touch on the heavy side. Though the bears are not the fastest animals, you do not want to reach muscle failure holding your kit waiting for the cubs to look up.

I have used that lens and ended up selling that lens to go back to this lens. Here are my reasons. Image quality wise, they are so comparable. There really isn't much to improve upon the image quality ofUSM non-L version. L is better but so marginally that image quality isn't a good reason for upgrade. Two biggest reason for upgrade is weather sealing/build quality and image stabilization. I didn't need either of those. I don't shoot macro shots in the rain or snow. USM version build quality is more than good enough. As for image stabilization, it's great for non-macro low light situations. I found it still difficult to hand hold even with image stabilization for critical macro shots under less than ideal light. You still want to use a tripod even with image stabilization for sharpest reliable results. (Perhaps I just have too unstable hands ...) I also found that I don't really need image stabilization under normal situations to get sharp images using 100mm f/2.8 handheld especially with modern cameras. Now there are other reasons, perhaps more important reasons for the L version than the two mentioned. It looks very nice. It's much more attractive looking lens than the USM version. Also, since it a "L" lens with the red ring, you can take pride in the fact that you are shooting with the very best that Canon is offering. Peace of mind with no other macro lens to upgrade to on an EF mount. (Until you "need" to get the RF version...) Well, there you have it. Since none of the reasons really attractive me to the L, I got rid of it and got 135mm f2 L USM and 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro instead. As mentioned previously, the version 2 has shorter minimum focusing distance, and this produces beautiful bokeh. when focusing at minimum distance....I am pleased I did not go for f2.8 as I have a Canon 135mm f2 lens which is a good combination for use with the portable 70-200 f4 for events and portraiture. So far, I have been impressed with the image quality of the lens.

I purchased this lens a couple months ago and have used it more then any other lens I own. Sharp and crisp photos and the auto focus is super fast on my 1D X Mark II and 5D Mark IV. One complaint I have noticed from others is it does not feel like a $1300 lens and I would agree. It doesn't feel as heavy duty as some other Canon lens but I don't know if that really matters as long it produces sharp photos. I have a Canon 70mm to 200mm and a Canon 100mm to 400mm and I know they will be damaged just as this lens would be if dropped. If you want an awesome macro lens, the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 macro IS USM lens is the way to go in my opinion.d
First time out in the field with this lens and it stood up well to the cold temps, sideways rain, and wind that Spring tends to bring to the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival.It was easy to use, even for an amateur like me.After considering this purchase for quite a while I'm happy to have made the investment. I can hardly wait to take this lens hiking and be able to capture the finer details of the forest. What a great addition to my already-found love of landscape/nature photography.Photos were taken with a Canon EOS 6D Mark II, which was also purchased through B&H.

First lens I bought had the early signs of this problem and was returned. That said, I've also seen lots of reviews from long time owners that make no mention of this issue so apparently it doesn't happen to all of them. What I can say at this point, the focus ring on the lens I have now doesn't have any slip, the focus is almost instant and the images are beautiful. This is also the first lens I've owned with IS and I already LOVE the added possibilities that brings. Amazing really. After extensive side-by-side evaluation, as much as I wanted to be ok with the 45mm TS-E, the 50mm was just so much better I couldn't be ok with the older design. In addition to being *much* sharper, it has virtually zero chromatic aberration, better color rendering and no distortion-all issues with the 45mm lens. In addition to being *much* sharper, it has virtually zero chromatic aberration, better color rendering and no distortion-all issues with the 45mm lens. Sharper than the proverbial razor, the images this lens produces will please ( and shock ) even the most discriminating photographer. There is even room for a tripod support ring, if wanted, to ensure those engaging in 1:1 image reproduction maintain the sharpness this lens is capable. If one wants to handhold and forego a tripod, the built-in IS works VERY well. One thing included in this lens design is weather sealing, which, in MHO, is more desirous than image stabilization. When using this lens in a tropical location, temperate rainforest, or even a shore setting, this latter feature is of utmost importance. Simply add a UV filter to the front element and you are ready to go in less than perfect conditions.
