Captain Toad Treasure Tracker is honestly a neat little game. Especially the 3DS version because it was probably made with the 3D in mind and has some of the strongest visuals for the system. If you've got a New, Standard, Normal sized or XL (hold Select for the XL version to scale the image down), consider giving it ago. It's a nice calm pretty game, it doesn't punish you with overly difficult puzzles and is good for short sittings.

I have been a fan of most Nintendo games, especially in the Mario World for decades. Captain Toad:Treasure Tracker is a welcome departure from the 2D platform and party games. With over 80 levels of diverse and increasingly complex lands to explore to find gems, defeat or avoid enemies and discover the all important coins to add extra lives, this game is one of the best. Each level consists of a 3D, rotatable world, in which the goal is usually to locate 3 gems and finally a big star in order to complete the level. Various types of paths and traversable land and water are full of items and tools used to collect coins or disburse adversaries or blow up walls to gain access to otherwise hidden areas. Similar to Mario Brothers, If Toad is caught by an enemy, the first time he shrinks a bit. If he doesnt find a mushroom to become large again, running into an enemy again means that level is over. Again, similar to Mario Brothers, there are coins located all over in the open, and hidden in plants you need to pick and caves. Getting 100 coins adds an extra Toad life to your game. The game mechanics are unique in that instead of just running and jumping to the right to reach a goal, you must carefully follow paths and actually rotate the world in 3D view to be able to keep trackof where Toad is going. While mastering the controls has a slight learning curve, my 6 year old niece was happily traversing through the first few levels in no time. There is a demo available in the Nintendo E-Shop if youre interested, but purchasing the game via cartridge allows it to be shared between more than one Switch if you have them.

Overall, the game play is good! The controls are easy. The puzzles are not too hard but I understand why some people might think only children would like this. I love the game but I love playing as Toad in any Mario video games. I haven't gotten too far into the game but love the different ways to play. You can play the hide and seek with Toad and the regular game puzzles. I give the game a 4 stars only because I hoped the game itself would be a lot better than expected. Thinking of what games Nintendo has released I guess I had really high expectations for this being a Mario character game. I know Nintendo doesn't always hit the target on non main Mario character games but I WOULD RECOMMEND the game as a new adventure for anyone interested in seeing some beloved ... MoreOverall, the game play is good! This is a great game in which you solve puzzles and find hidden things. I am only giving it 4 stars because it is rather difficult for my kids to play. My son is 7 and got far in the game and my daughter is 4 and struggles on every level. Other than that is fun to play and adds a different twist on puzzle solving. It really makes you think which is great. Some levels are really easy and some are really hard. I guess if you need help just you tube it. Got this game on sale and was worth it. Just wouldn’t pay full price.
Captain Toad is a 3D puzzle and platforming game. Toad doesn't jump and mostly just avoids the bad guys so that most game stages focus is on 3D rotation and puzzle solving, So that makes it great for kids (a bit education) and families as the game can still be a challenge but takes away some of the challenging platforming elements, so it's less stressful. Toad does sometimes have toast bosses by throwing objects at them (like radishes and onions), or occasionally use the super hammer (like in Donkey Kong), or the super star (like in Super Mario Brothers) to take out enemies. Stage designs also look good, and are fun. There are several chapters which ramp up in difficulty, but after the easiest set of chapters the credits initially roll, so it's also great for kids ... MoreCaptain Toad is a 3D puzzle and platforming game. The late stages are challenging even for veteran gamers. Very well put-together game.
Captain Toad Treasure Tracker really is a darling game. The bite sized diorama puzzles really do fit the theme quite well. You could sit for hours solving levels, or just one or two in a small sitting. Both are great ways to play the game. The disc itself is pristine, and the box and artwork only have very minor cosmetic flaws. I’m very satisfied with my purchase.
Pretty good spin-off of the Captain Toad levels in Super Mario 3D World. It has some great puzzles to play through, but it is unfortunately pretty uneven in its presentation with reused cutscenes and having what is, in essence, the same boss multiple times. But for the most part, the core gameplay is strong. If you're looking for something breezy while still being fun for the kids, it's a no-brainer, get it right away. If you're a bit older, however, you might enjoy it for its gameplay loop but it does get tiresome and repetitive after a while.
I'd originally played this on Wii U. The levels are fun to play through, and there is a great variety of stages to work through, so it was an easy enough decision to get this again. No one is forcing a person to re-buy a port so I don't really see why some people get so upset when they do so. Perhaps a 3rd book would have been a welcome addition to add into this port but there is enough variety and number of stages that lack of new content shouldn't be much of a deal breaker, perhaps we can hold out hope that they will offer DLC in form of a 3rd book or make a sequel in future, for now we can enjoy the Mario Odyssey themed level additions. its about 40% less than the cost of most other titles on Switch. This game was never offered as a full priced title even back ... MoreI'd originally played this on Wii U. This game was never offered as a full priced title even back when it was on Wii U and for the cost of the game I'd say you get a decent amount of content included for what you are spending on the game. I'd recommend playing this game either with a pro-controller or handheld, since controlling the camera with the second joy-con can be awkward given its placement, and the amount of camera adjusting you'll do in this game. Using the gyroscope sensor to manipulate the puzzle aspects of each level was an easy enough work around since we no longer have a touch pad in docked mode.
Taken from bonus levels in Super Mario 3D World, Captain Toad expands the premise of small puzzle levels that work just as they do in any 3D Mario game, except Toad can't jump. This small change ripples across the gameplay of Captain Toad, but the extra restriction rarely feels hindering as the levels are clearly designed to show you the routes to the star. The view is completely controllable, giving you the extra tool to find all of the bonuses as well. If you're not a fan of touching the screen while playing, you'll be frustrated as it is a major feature in many levels, and always useful for stunning enemies and finding hidden coins. As with any major Nintendo release, the product quality is top notch, with graphics, sound and control excellent as Captain Toad ... MoreTaken from bonus levels in Super Mario 3D World, Captain Toad expands the premise of small puzzle levels that work just as they do in any 3D Mario game, except Toad can't jump. This seems like an excellent game for kids, as removing the jump keeps the gameplay simple and without a time limit and relatively slow enemies, the game should be enjoyed by children not ready to take on Super Mario Bros yet. However, there are 3 jewels to find in every level as well as a bonus objective, like finding a secret 1-up or gold mushroom, or not taking damage, etc. that increases the challenge for seasoned gamers. Additionally, the game tracks most coins and fastest times, with a challenge time per level eventually unlocked. There are secret bonus levels as well that I won't spoil. Excellent value.
Have to admit that I owned a first gen nintendo gaming system, the nes. I bought the Wii U mainly for: nostalgia and a change of gaming pace (PS4, gaming pc, regular Wii). What's great about Toad and other Wii U games is that they are completely off-beat and different than other current gen so if you periodically tire of "traditional" gaming with big titles or have kids, then the Wii U is a refreshing alternative. However a lot of Wii U games including Toad cater more towards a younger audience. For example, clicking inside the Wii Pad touch screen just to move certain puzzle pieces, Toad's squealing voice at every level start, and bouncing boulders with frowning faces I find rather childish and stupid. Toad is a puzzler existing in the typical vein of the Mario ... MoreHave to admit that I owned a first gen nintendo gaming system, the nes. Toad is a puzzler existing in the typical vein of the Mario universe geared for kids and touch screen users, not for serious adults looking for a legitimate challenge based on logic and reasoning. The game is gimmicky and annoying at best, buy only if you really like Toad and find the vast majority of Wii U titles amazing and fruitful. TL:DR Buy Toad if: 1. Like childish gimmicky puzzlers. 2. Enjoy touch screen technology integrated in to puzzle gameplay. 3. Love to hear Toad squealing and yelling at key events in-game.
