Catan - Junior

CATAN Junior takes families with children ages 6 and up to a place quite different from CATAN. There are no "settlers" around here. Instead, the players slip into the role of pirates who build their hideouts - called pirates' lairs - all over the islands and set sail to find new places and build more pirates' lairs there. The die-cut resource tiles included in CATAN Junior are very convenient for children, because unlike in the CATAN game for adults, the players don't have to hold cards in their hands but can place the resource tiles in front of them. Catan Junior can also be played as a 2-player game. Although CATAN Junior contains some simplified rules so that 6-year-olds can participate without any difficulty, it is still unmistakably a "CATAN" game. CATAN Junior is not just a game for kids but a genuine family game, to be enjoyed by adults and young children alike.

All the little pieces were there!

Not only were all of the intricate pieces here and in good shape, but they were nicely organized in little baggies that my students continue to use. You can't know how many fights you have saved in my 6th grade classroom now that I have two copies of the game!

Great for families!

This is a good Junior version of the game. It moves quickly, has simplified rules and setup, but it also does a pretty good job of preparing younger players for the full version when older. The four year old had to be on a team with his dad, but stayed involved and interested the whole game. The six year old we played with was OK on her own, with occasional reminders from her mom. The older kids loved it and caught on quickly!

Great game

Not too hard for kids but some strategy. Good fun, well thought out. Takes an adult to run the game. Colorful pieces are visually appealing.

Great reimagining of the original!

Our 6-year-old gamer loves this simplified Catan. Gamer and non-gamer adults do too. I do have a nit to pick with it though, which is that in three- and four-player games (we haven't played it with two players), whoever gets out in front first seems to overwhelm everyone else, and that player is usually whoever goes third or fourth, which is never the kid, because the kid goes first. So I recommend having kids play in 3rd or 4th position so we can have fun losing to them :)

My older kids (ages 7 to 12) are enjoying Catan Jr.
31 December 2020

Another homeschool mom recommended this game to me. My kids are loving strategy games and I wanted to encourage this. In the past I have steered away from strategy games as a tired mom not feeling I have the time to figure them out, ha! However, I pushed past that and bought them Catan Jr. and also Ticket to Ride. What really helped me was watching you tube videos on how to play the games. One of my kids was hesitant to try as he was confused on how to play. I told him we could team up and he did very well that way. Next game I am sure he can play on his own. My kids love both Catan Jr and Ticket to Ride. Highly recommend.

Perfect for young and old to play together
19 November 2024

My daughter got this for her birthday last year and she loves it! Her younger and older siblings can all play together. It’s not too simple that it’s boring, and not to hard for the younger siblings to learn.

It took a little time to understand the instructions but then it was easy to play with our children. It is a good game of strategy. The pieces are very sturdy and the game board does not take-up much space to spread out. I highly recommend it.

[Rewarded Review] Excited to play this with the kids
6 December 2023

It was suggested to us by friends to buy this game, to play it with our 7 and 10 year old. We had it shipped to us and it arrived in good as new condition and without damage. So the packaging was brilliant and the game box is really sturdy. No damage inside the box either. We've heard great things about it and we're looking forward to playing together.

[Rewarded Review] Good game for kids, but poor quality
12 December 2023

The pieces are made from paper, and the graphics are coming off even as we separate it from the mould. I do not think this will last long. The game is good for kids, simple and is a good introduction to Catan. But not sure if it is worth the cost.
