Get this to go Low/Slow

Am new to the Kamado, so everything has been a first time for me. I started off with all direct heat set ups and cooked burgers that my wife claims are the best we've made, and grilled chicken that I think was the best we've made. It was great to fill the grill with butterflied boneless skinless chicken breast and make enough to freeze for abuncha menus that have all been awesome. Wanted to try some low/slow smoking. Ordered the smoking stone/heat deflector, and it arrived quickly in good shape. It fits well and does the job nicely. Protects the grill food from intense heat and from open flames when the grill is open. Gives a place to set a pan to catch drippings. So far have smoked our first Boston Butt and St. Louis cut spare ribs. The butt turned out really good. ... MoreAm new to the Kamado, so everything has been a first time for me. I followed a recipe for the ribs that was not the best, so I get to do that one over before calling it a keeper. Liking the smoking stone/heat deflector so well, that I'm about to order the pizza stone to open even more opportunities. If you're ready for low/slow smoking, don't hesitate pulling the trigger on the smoking stone. Have enjoyed the AKORN kamado so much that we've given the Weber and Traeger to the grandkids starting their own households.

The thing is, we can't bear to go back to baking pizza in the oven so we are dealing with the issue of breakage. We didn't drop ours, nor do any of the things that the paperwork advises against. I think these stones are just fragile. We try to be extra careful now, but we have also ordered a back-up so that we won't be without a stone, especially if we are in the middle of making pizza when we have the next disaster. We've also just had our grate crack--it was just a couple of pieces from the main (outer ring) and a small part of the inner ring so we have been grilling meat around the holes until the new parts arrive. It's awfully disappointing, and we wonder if the heat capacity of this grill is hard on the grates and stones. We hope CharGriller will look into the breakage issue with their supplier. If we go through another two stones before the next summer has passes, we may just invest in a Green Egg--their stones seem to be more durable according to the reviews we've read. I'd love to give this a better star-rating but 4 stars seems too high--I'd have given a 3.5 if it was possible to do that. I would recommend to friends with a warning to be prepared to replace parts.

I did not drop this stone and was always careful with it. After 4 uses, it broke into 2 pieces when I picked it up! Based on the fact that you could see drips of drippings where it broke, it obviously either was cracked when purchased or else cracked under heat and eventually grease worked it's way into the crack. This is a flaw in the product. Char-griller said that because it wasn't the first use, it couldn't be a defect. Bottom line - don't buy this deflector.

Smokin Stone
3 November 2016

Been venturing into long and slow smoking, and this stone is a must allowing stable temps at or below 250 for hours on end. I tried a brisket without the stone, actually substituted a pizze stone for the smokin' stone, and about an hour is the pizza stone split in half.....don't try this at home! Plus the results of the effort with versus without don't compare, so much better with. If you have an Akorn and want to smoke Turkey, Brisket, rack of lamb, etc, this is an absolute necessity.

Smokin' Stone
8 July 2013

The Akorn Smokin Stone does a great job providing indirect heat while smoking meat in the Akorn Kamado Kooker. It lays right into the holding mounts inside the grill. The only drawback is Chargriller didn't provide a good means to store the stone when removed from the grill, especially when just adding more fuel during a long cook. Adding some mounts to the grill legs to store the stone on edge would be beneficial. This is my second stone. The first one I had leaned up against the grill while tending coals, only to have it fall over and break in half - and leave a colorful bruise on my bare foot.

Smokin' stone/deflector for Acorn
11 June 2020

The smokin' stone is an essential piece of equipment if you do a pork shoulder or similar slow cook on an Acorn. I've replaced two in 10 years. Both times it was because I got careless. I advise against leaving it outside between uses, where it might get wet or subjected to cold winter temperatures. If you spill water on it while it's hot, you'll break it. It's unglazed ceramic and that is an excellent material for the purpose. But vulnerability to thermal or mechanical shock is the nature of the beast. Having said that, there is no reason it won't last for decades if used within the design limits of the material. Get a good pair of insulated gloves to handle it when it's hot. There are alternative tricks to get the same effect, but the smokin' stone works for me.

Split in half after 12 uses
19 July 2021

I purchased this item and used it a total of 12 times before I noticed a crack that spanned more than half the cross-sectional distance. I removed the item from my grill and it split in to two pieces in my hands. This was an item that I thought was a good buy until now. I am very disappointed and when I need a new grill I will keep this in mind since QC is apparently not on the top of the list when providing a quality product.

Turn your grill into a Ferrari smoker
12 April 2016

A friend saw my grill and said, "Oh buddy, you have yourself a FERRARI of a barbecue grill and you don't even know it... you gotta buy a smokin' stone." With the smokin' stone, and the air inlet and outlet control, you can fine-tune your temperature for indirect heat and slow-smoking. I threw on a pork butt roast, with some rib rub beforehand, smoked it for 3 hours at 275 and then put in in aluminum foil for another 4 hours. It was AMAZING barbecue. My family could not believe that I made it. HIGHLY recommended... if you have the Char-Griller Akorn grill, this will take it from "nice" to "WOW"

Works great, until it breaks
28 April 2019

I bought my first stone a few years ago and it broke mid cook and caused my brisket to burn. However I did use it for every cook in my grill. But sadly it just snapped when I placed it in. Maybe the fire was too close to the stone IDK, but the stone is a must for smoking with the grill. Still a must buy despite it's tendency to break that I saw in other reviews after mine broke.
