This is a fun time everytime we bring it out. It's great for groups to play, and we have the NSFW version too which can be even more fun to watch people squirm to find the right risque clues. It's a great exercise in trying to think on the same page as someone else, especially bc you have to come up with 1 word clues and avoid having your team guess the other teams words, or even a special agent codeword that means an automatic fail for your team. The dynamic changes everytime bc you have different words, different teammates, a different grid of word options and pitfalls. It's also pretty compact, which makes it great to take for social gatherings with family. And if you have young kids, they even have a Disney version.

Works pefectly with the Code Names cards. The cards are easy to flip over in order to use the other side. It's in four pieces that snap together easily and are stable when connected. The separate easily and fit in the original game box. But they don't fit in the box if you also bought the box insert as I did. It's not a big problem, the lid just doesn't close all the way.

This game is especially good when you have group and you can’t play other games. You just divide into 2 teams. We love this game. You lay out 25 words and your goal is to get your team to guess your words with a one word clue. All without guessing the other teams cards or the one word that ends the game immediately. To listen to everyone try and figure out what the speaker was thinking is hysterical! Minimum players is 4 even though we have done it with 3. All ages can participate, but the younger ones shouldn’t be the speakers. This game plays pretty quickly and you can play over and over with new words.

Codenames is a very quick to learn game that does not require overhead to explain. The innovative approach is excellent for the four player version (have not tried this version as 2 player) and the game play does allow for a bit of thinking, innovative word usage and games finish in 20 minutes or so. The words chosen for the cards are first rate and can be related in numerous ways. Components are great though the cards are a little small depending on your vision (the XXL version however, the cards are huge so no problem seeing those at all). A great game!
The way the game is designed makes it almost impossible to become boring because the word connections will always be different. If you and the other players are bilingual you can incorporate a foriegn language into the clue. Additionally consider buying some index cards, cutting them to size and writing in your own words in English or a foreign language and now you have an almost free expansion pack. Some players are slow. Consider buying a hourglass sand timer, maybe 2 or 3 minutes if you'd like the game to be fast paced.
This game is so much fun! We played this game on a multi day trip with several couples and had such a good time. Synopsis of game play: Divide into two teams and set up the board in a 5x5 grid. Choose spymasters that are responsible for giving the clues and the field operatives which guess the cards to select from the grid you’ve set up. You then draw a key card that shows which cards are neutral, which cards belong to the the two teams and the one assassin card. Choosing the assassin card ends the game. The teams prepare to play by trying to come up with a word that will allow for a card, or ideally multiple cards to be guessed during the turn. The spymaster cannot say any of the words on the board or words that are contained within words on the board. Screenshots ... MoreThis game is so much fun! I LOVE this game and have gotten all of my friends and family hooked! It takes a second to learn to play, and is best learned from someone who has played before, but once you understand, it's so fun! The best part is, you could play it over and over and the board will NEVER be the same twice (which is a problem with other games I have because after a while, you learn the cards and it gets boring). HIGHLY recommend!Update: I was reading the negative comments about this game and wanted to clear a few things up.1. This game says best for 2+ people but in reality, it's best with 6-10 people. If you're only getting it to play in your two-person household, it might be more difficult.2. The rules are complicated, but it makes so much more sense once you start to play ... MoreI LOVE this game and have gotten all of my friends and family hooked! I would recommend playing with someone who knows how to play or watching a YouTube video on how to play because the written rules can be hard to understand.3. This is a thinking game, which I enjoy but it's not everyone's cup of tea. This is not really a "drunk house party" game but I've brought it to game nights and Christmas parties and it's been a hit every time.4. I've seen a lot of comments about people saying this game was "too easy" because they give a clue to guess ONE card and it's "too obvious." That is not the point of the game. If you did that, the team to go second would win every time and that would be boring! The point is to give a clue that could tie in AS MANY of your cards that you can tie together in one round. For example: let's say I had cards that were New York, pie, and sweet. I would say "Apple for 3" and my teammates would guess which 3 cards on the board could be related to apple. Their official guess is when they touch the card on the board. If they get all 3 cards, great for our team! However, YOU DO NOT GO AGAIN! It's the next team's turn. I saw reviews that said that people would give clues for a single card, get it right, and then go again. What???? So basically they were giving 8-9 single card clues in a row and winning. That is not how you play the game.
Our friends brought this to one of our Game Nights, and I have to admit that I was a little skeptical based on corny "spy" theme and the overall look of the packaging. Boy oh boy, was a I pleasantly surprised!! In a nutshell, I loved this game for its simplicity in pieces (no crazy board or obnoxious amount of accessories) and its requirement to creatively think. The Rules: 1. Prepare the board. To do this, you simply lay out 25 white cards in a 5 by 5 grid. 2. Divide into two teams: red and blue. We had a group of 4, so we did 2 teams of 2. On each team, nominate one person to be the clue-giver. All remaining players are the guessers. 3. Let the clue-givers (one for each team) pick the one code-breaker card. This will essentially map the grid of white cards by assigning which cards belong to which team. For example, this means that the clue-giver on the red team is going to have to get the red team guesser(s) to guess the cards that are tagged as red. In addition to noting which of the 25 white cards are red and which are blue, the code-breaker card also selects one that is black (the assassin). If any guesser names the black card, the game is over. Untagged cards remain white. They are neutral, meaning that nothing happens if they are guessed. 4. Let the first team start. The clue-guesser must look at all of the cards that have been tagged to their team, and with one word, try to have the guesser(s) on their team say as many of the cards. The guessers look to all 25 cards, and not knowing which belong to their team, which belong to the other team, and which is the black assassin, try to name only cards that belong to their team. Example: The cards lips, lemon, mango, and ear are 4 cards on the 25 card grid. You are giving the clues and lips and lemon are tagged to your team. Mango and ear are tagged to the other team. This means you want to try to get your teammate(s) to say lemon and/or lips and NOT mango nor ear. If you say "flavor" it is not enough to distinguish between lemon and mango. If say "body part" it is not enough to distinguish between ear and lips. But maybe the clue "pucker" could be enough?! 5. Continue in this manner, going back and forth, until one team identifies all of their cards. That team is the winner! One thing I will note is that this game can move along rather slowly, because of its requirement to think. This means there can be a lot of downtime while you are waiting for the clue giver to come up with their clue. We were OK with this, but you might want to have some music or TV on in the background.
A thought-provoking but fun game which can be played by mixed-age teams, as it only takes 15-20 minutes. Quite a simple concept, but endless variations and combination possibilities for repeated play. Good for developing lateral thinking in finding word connections, but equally good for children playing who see a more immediate and simpler picture....however you play there are bound to be hilarious outcomes!Highly recommended for many situations - small and easily portable for holidays or train journeys, short breaks from screen-play overload, and addictive for ultra-competitive long play sessions.Highly recommended and reasonably priced - get one.
After playing this at a stag do I bought it for myself.I love a good puzzle game and this codenames is amazing. It's a word association game to play with friends and family where you have to work with your teammates and know how they associate random words. Loads of replay value as patterns and words will never match up to duplicate the same scenario. Can easily bring round to a friends house and setup in a few minutes. Highly recommend.
