I studied Frankenstein for Year 12 English, and if I still think it's a great novel after studying it, it must be good. It's a Gothic novel with some incredibly insightful themes that are still applicable today (maybe even more so with technology; it was written in 1818 by a 21 year old woman). It can be a little bit of a chore to read because it's so eloquent and expressive, but that's typically how books were written at the time, and it added a layer of depth to the story. The monster was incredibly eloquent and complex, Dr Frankenstein was (nearly) everything an immoral mad scientist could be. I learnt a lot and will likely read this multiple times (but maybe after the school experience has worn off).
Hollywood invented tropes that have nothing in common with the original. Frankenstein is a cowardly father who rejects his monster child at the moment of birth. The poor creature tries to be his best, only to fail at no fault of his own.
The novel is nothing like the movies. Frankenstein is a cowardly scientist who can't face up to his mistakes. His "monster" tries his best only to be confronted with the worst aspects of humanity.
