The long distance runner. A durable carbon black mixture, a well regarded puncture protection system and the DuraSkin-anti-cut fabric turn the GatorSkin into a real long distance runner. In varying widths of 23mm and 25mm it can be used on the way to work as well as training for road races or for sportives and audax. A durable, tough tyre at a really nice price. PolyX Breaker Technology With their PolyX Breaker, Continental bring PKW know-how to the bike tyre arena – Polyester has been used successfully for years in car tyres and been tried and tested many times. The extremely resistant polyester fibre is woven tightly crosswire making a very high fabric density which not only makes the Breaker more resistant to foreign objects, but is also resistant to punctures. The rolling resistance is not effected either by the PolyX Breaker. DuraSkin Tyres with DuraSkin sidewall protection have to roll with the punches. These tyres are used in the harshest conditions. On messenger bikes, on epic travel bikes crossing continents without wearing through and in professional cycling they have to endure tough tests such as Paris-Roubaix. The high-quality polyamide fabric reliably protects the casing of the tyre and protects the tyre from the worst conditions. These tyres stand out with their brown sidewalls. The slick natural rubber tread is designed to perform well in wet/wintery conditions.

I've been riding the Continental Gatorskin for about 15 years after years of racing on lighter tires. I would call them puncture-resistant, but not puncture-proof. I ride 10,000+ miles/year and get a handful of flats - usually from sharp glass shards and goatheads. Otherwise they wear very well, making them more economical that most other tires. I recommend the foldable tire, which can be mounted without a tire iron with some practice and strong fingers, thus eliminating the chance of pinch flats. The rigid version with the wire bead is very difficult to mount without risking damaging the tube, although there is an on-line video showing some tricks to alleviate the difficulty.

I've been using these tires for many years and have found them to be quite reliable. Yes, I've had a few flats, but I'd like to think that number would been much higher had I not been using the Gatorskins. I've been able to get what I consider good mileage out of them with nominal wear to the tread surface. However, what does give me cause for concern are the sidewalls. When I first started using them I began noticing black hair-like threads hanging off the sidewall close to where the tire is seated to the rim- *not* at the point of contact with the rim, but about 2-4 millimeters away from the edge of the rim. Moreover, this happened not just on one rim or one bike, but it's happened on multiple rims and bikes. I've come to the conclusion the sidewalls are simply delaminating on a thread-by-thread basis and I haven't experienced a complete sidewall failure. I just have to take a pair of scissors after the threads every so often. Just for reference, I generally use 700x23's, but have had the occasion to use 700x25's and 700x28 (only once). I had originally thought it might have been a heat build-up issue from using a trailer, but I haven't used that in several years now and it didn't seem to make a difference. All that said, I like the tires- but I wish I could have greater confidence in the sidewall construction. If not for that, I would rate the tires with a "5".

I use these on my Trike for Road Cycling/Touring during The Hedge Cutting Season and winter. They are pretty bomb proof at resisting thorns and other punctures. With sidewall protection I haven’t found a better tyre to avoid punctures.A down side is on the rare occasions that I have had a puncture from a thorn the thorn has broken when I tried to get it out. I personally consign the tyre to the bin, for fear that the thorn left in the tyre causing a further puncture. The other downside is the tyre is slow rolling. Don’t expect to break any records. On the plus side, I use them throughout winter, despite appearances they have very good grip and are hard wearing.

Excellent tires for everyday riding. This is not my first set of Gatorskins, and it won't be my last. They have always had excellent puncture resistance along with great road grip in different conditions both wet and dry. I would not consider them a "race tire" due to their weight. But I trust these tires when I'm riding hard on training rides.
As I haven't been able to get out for more than two rides on the tyre due to the poor weather here in Scotland I can't say how good it will be for puncture protection. However I was very pleased to be able to fit the tyre on with minimal effort unlike the Bontrager which had been fitted to my bike. It certainly runs smoothly and isn't particularly heavy despite being labelled as a training /winter tyre. I would certainly buy another when I need to replace the other tyre. So good buy so far.
I've ridden across the US and the UK on these tires without ONE flat. I wouldn't install any other tire on my road bikes if I'm riding significant road miles or touring. Yorktown VA to San Francisco - 4096 miles - not one flat. John O'Groats to Lands End - 1100 miles - not one flat. German Engineering and Manufacturing - can't be beaten. Don't buy any other road tire if you want peace of mind against flats.
A convert to wider tyres after moving up from 25mm to 28mm and now 32mm as my rim brake road bike does have clearance. I don't see any dip in performance going wider, and only upsides. More confidence boosting descending, better on rough roads, and the surprising part much longer lasting than narrower tyres. Previous Gators in narrower sizes I have got maybe around 4500-5000 miles out of a rear tyre. the 32mm version I am getting almost 7000 miles on a rear tyre. oh and did I mention I can't remember the last time I punctured? Punctures were rare before but on the wider tyre even more so.
