I did a review after the first ride, something I rarely do. But, after a year wearing out one of the worst bike tires I've ever owned--and that's 35 years of riding mountain, road, and now gravel--the first ride was a revelation: quiet and smooth, and pretty quick, on pavement, with complete stability and grip when I shot from pavement at an angle to a dirt path. The two 650 X 42's I bought weigh 420 and 428 grams. I was not sure about which model to try - the Terra Speed or the Terra Trail. These Terra Trail roll extremely fast and are very smooth, with good cornering grip and decent straight line traction on steep, slippery surfaces. The ride quality is very good, perhaps due to the high thread count of the casing in conjunction with the Black Chili compound. I run them tubeless at 26 psi front, 28 rear (I weigh just under 150 pounds). I ride smooth gravel, pavement, rough 4wd roads, all dirt roads and the occasional bit of rocky singletrack trail. Tires are as fast as similarly sized road tires but impressively tough in terms of scuffs and cuts while staying very supple and smooth on rougher surfaces. Seriously fast rolling speed but still stays hooked up in an impressively wide range of conditions. Very pleased with these tires, especially after having spent a few months with wider and slicker 37s.
I have a set of Terra Speeds which are shockingly fast on road, but also pretty solid off road until it gets exceptionally chunky, greasy, or sandy. These are obviously slower on pavement, but still pretty fast. Off road, they grip well on everything I ride. I have a love/hate relationship with Conti off-road tires, but I’m very happy with these. I have the 700 X 40
Black Chilli compound is super grippy. High tack on the paved areas even though there are fewer surface contact patches. Pros: -super grippy combo tyre -Pops on the rim fairly easily Cons: these are not cheap tyres N.B. I bought a 700x40c Terra Trail and it works out as a 38mm on my vernier calipers. The compound is trading durability for grip so it may well wear faster on paved areas than normal summer tyres. Weight is normal but not heavy Happy with my new boots; Off I go :)
After doing a lot of online research and reviews, I decided to try out the 700c x 40 Continental Terra Trails. After one ride I can say these tires are pretty awesome. They seem to roll pretty good on asphalt and hard packed dirt, and gripped going across an off-camber grass hill, and didn't slip in the gravel. I don't have a whole lot of experience with gravel tires, but I can say these feel great and I'm a lot more confident on these over the stock skinnies. Now my only little gripe is that the tire pictured doesn't match what I was sent. This is purely aesthetic and has nothing to do with the performance of the tire. The traction, tread wear, and ride quality are all pretty good after a few hundred miles, but the sidewalls leak a ton of air. It has been doing it since new and I have added stan’s sealant a few times trying to stop the leaking but it continues. It loses all of the air overnight and loses about five psi during a typical ride (35psi down to 30psi). The airleaks have been confirmed with soapy water. It is definitely oozing out of the sidewalls.
i found these tires to be impossible to install. this tire`s bead diameter is small compared to my kendo tires. i could get the tire over the wheel rim. i had to reinstall the old kendos, had no problem
