Bought mine used and it worked great

I bought mine used on Facebook marketplace. The person I bought this from had used it for a couple of projects mainly using soft material. I probably have had this for a year now and have 2 to 3 hours of actual cutting time on the machine. I have run everything from Pine to Maple, Walnut and cherry. I’ve done edge, jointing and face jointing up to about 4 inches. This unit has produced very flat and very square material. I do not suggest taking any more than 1/32 in off at a time. I have my fingers crossed that the unit doesn’t burn out on me.

Very cheeply made. Low quality blades. Within running the 1st 4 or 5 boards through it the blades were shot. I was planning yellow pine boards for a work bench I'm building. The first couple came out decent. After a short time I started noticing grooves in the boards. Upon inspection I noticed one of the blades had a chunk missing out of it. I'm 100% positive there was no metal ever in the wood I was joining. Luckily it failed inside of the grace period. It'll be going back shortly. The fence is also very flimsy and light duty. I can find better things to spend almost 500 bucks on.

After doing a bunch of comparison shopping and reading as many reviews as I could find I took a shot at the new Craftsman Bench top Jointer. Overall quality out of the box is good. Set up was straight forward. The fence had some so so reviews but to the contrary it only took a few minutes of set up and it was dead square. My first few cuts were test pieces and all edge work which came out as I expected it to. Dead flat. So I went to production and everything came out great. Then I started on some aged cedar 2x4's 14 inches long using the tool to plane the wide edge and results were a bit different. The blades lost contact on the last 2-3 inches. Now I'm getting perfectly smooth flat planed sides.Note to Craftsman...No troubleshooting guide in the user documentation. I had to refer to a competitor's user documentation for that so, a ding on user documentation, but overall a decent product for the price. Lets hope it lasts me many years of use just like all my other Craftsman tools. Glad to see Craftsman making a comeback!

Great value

This is a mighty little jointer . I had been wanting to buy one without spending too much that would give me good results with my joinery . This little fella turned out to be the choice i was waiting for . it is a good size and heavy enough that handles long pieces of wood just fine and stays put without even being screwed down to the surface . The dust collector port is pretty convenient and takes the regular 2-2.25 inch hose from my shop vac with a good snug fit . i have had this for over 6 months now and no complains . I have not replaced the original blades yet and so far it looks pretty good. i dont use it that often so blades should still last. i have used these to join boards for table top and cutting boards and my results are much better now than what i was ... MoreThis is a mighty little jointer . Overall i am happy with it and would recommend anyone looking for a good value dependable jointer.

Please Don't Buy

After looking for a bench jointer I stumbled upon this craftsman model. I thought it would be a nice tool to have in my shop and help eliminate most of the No. 7 planing I was used to doing.I purchased this product, put it together, and made approximately 10 runs on a 1.5" x 4" cedar board. Then, it stopped working. I mean it just wouldn't turn back on. So frustrating.Anyway, I took it all apart and returned it less than 3-hours after I purchased it. I am not one to post reviews, as a matter-of-fact this is my first ever review of any product I have ever purchased, but as a pretty serious hobbyist (and someone who doesn't have a lot of money to make these types of purchases) I find it very disappointing that I got sold such a shoddy product. If you happen to be ... MoreAfter looking for a bench jointer I stumbled upon this craftsman model. Please don't waste your money. Spend a few hundred more and buy a tool that will last.I'll keep looking for a bench jointer but in the meantime, it looks like me and ol' No. 7 are going back to work tomorrow.

Same Issue from the Same Manufacturer
22 June 2023

Like almost every single negative review on here, I used my jointer a grand total of 6 times doing very, very light jointing work (maybe 6 - 8 passes each use), it was stored in climate controlled conditions, and suddenly on the 7th use, the controller on the board feeding the speed controller goes out. I fire it up, it runs for maybe 3.5 seconds and then dies not to start again. After some trouble shooting, i discover my suspicions were correct and it was the board. I looked and looked for solutions to this issue, including tried to return it to lowe's but it was outside the return window, I tried to order a new board but the only place i could find it was Ali Baba and waiting 3 years for the 20-pack to arrive isn't acceptable, and I tried to contact Craftsman but ... MoreLike almost every single negative review on here, I used my jointer a grand total of 6 times doing very, very light jointing work (maybe 6 - 8 passes each use), it was stored in climate controlled conditions, and suddenly on the 7th use, the controller on the board feeding the speed controller goes out. Finally, the solution i landed on was the remove the speed controller function altogether. It runs at maximum speed and I've ruined quite a few work pieces but at least its something and sometimes something is a risk you have to take. I will say this, my perception of Craftsman has always been that it's a cheap, discount brand that makes low quality disposable tools that would be better suited being sold in the Harbor Freights of the world. However, that perception had slowly started to change with time as they had done a good job of revamping their image. But I've now come to realize that all they have done is simply pour boatloads of money into marketing and nothing more, certainly not quality control or aims at building higher quality products. This was my first Craftsman purchase in decades, and based on the quality of the product as well as the quality of the customer support, it will be the last product I ever purchase with the craftsman name on it. Just not worth it.

Total junk!
30 March 2023

I bought this today because it was the only bench jointer Lowe's had in stock. I used it on a 1X3 piece of pine that was about 32" long and it did great. I used it on a second piece of 1X3 pine and ended up with a board that was wider in the middle than each end. I guess something as hard as pine is too much wood for this thing! Maybe it would work better on marshmallows! It is going back to Lowe's!

Unreliable

I bought one of these last year. Like so many others, it stopped turning on after my fifth use. To reply to another commenter, the spindle lock isn't the culprit here and it has never "jumped up" onto the spinning spindle and I doubt it even could. This jointer does work well, when it works. To Craftsman's credit, they sent me another of the same model to replace the broken one. As of now, about 3 weeks and 6 or 8 uses later, it is still functioning normally. Hopefully they rectified whatever low quality crap they'd put in the switch/board/controller.Without clarity on this, I DO NOT recommend buying this jointer.

Vintage Craftsman is much better
30 August 2023

I was considering this jointer but then a friend gave me his 1991 Craftsman 5 1/8" jointer (model#149236321). It weighs 41 lbs., has a fairly flat heavy cast iron top and base and a sturdy, somewhat thick stamped metal fence that easily adjusts to and holds 90 degrees. The infeed base also needed no calibration to the outfeed base and holds it position. Dust port works great: doesn't clog up even if not using a shop vac. This thing works better than any of the current benchtop models and it is 30 years old. Sad commentary on today's junk.

Wonderful Machine (So Far)

As with many others I was a bit skeptical purchasing this jointer due to all the two and a half star ratings. I wanted the Porter-Cable but no one carries them locally near Little Rock, AR. Stanley Black+ Decker makes both the Craftsman and Porter-Cable jointer. I bought the Craftsman jointer with the extra two year warranty for a little reinsurance. I got the jointer home and unboxed it. Everything was there and looked fine. Assembly was a breeze. I watched three YouTube videos on setting it up just to make sure I got everything assembled and rigged correctly. Steve Schmidt's YouTube video is excellent to watch for unboxing, assembly and alignment. Both in and out feed beds were level, the fence assembled required no adjustment to achieve the 90 degree. I was very satisfied with the assembly. I hooked up my Oneida Durt Deputy and put the jointer to work. I jointed 25 or more pieces of 1" X 5" X 36" cedar boards before running them through a planner. The Craftsman jointer preformed exceptionally well. I would recommend this jointer to the weekend garage/shop woodworker (of which I am). If you are looking at high volume or industrial jointing I would recommend looking for a higher end jointer designed for that volume of work like a Jet or Powermatic. Lowes is always great with their policy honoring Veterans a 10% discount.
