1st fish with the Daiwa Exceler 4000

I finally had a chance to try out my new reel. I filled this reel with 50# Power Pro with a base of 20' of 30# mono to prevent Spectra slippage. The mono & PP were joined by using an Albridght knot. I smeared the Al spool with a hard car wax polish to hinder Al spool corrosion I mounted the reel on a 196 light salt water rod. Well my first and only fish so far was a 60# white sturgeon. The drag on the reel was very smooth . I had no problems fighting & landing the fish in 10 minutes.

Absolutely terrible company for saltwater reels!

Had mine for a year and so did a friend (bought at the same time). Within the first month had a grinding in the ball bearings. I don't do any beach fishing at all so i assumed that i got salt inside of it and cleaned it to no avail. A week later my friend's reel started doing the same. Now both of these reels were thoroughly cleaned after each use. Luckily another friend of ours knew a Daiwa rep., and we got all of the internals replace for free. Upon receiving it the worked great.....for about a month again..... I went as far as to replace the "sealed" ball bearings inside with ceramic ones i bought online, which did help, but has not totally absolved the issue with their crappy bearings grinding and locking up.

This is a very heavy strong reel. Very pleased with its performance in pulling up some red snapper. Feels more like a 4500-5000. My only reel complaint is that its not very salt water resistant. When the spool is in the highest position it exposes the inside of the reel to the elements. One day on a boat and i had to take it apart and re-oil and grease it because of all the salt water that l in there. My friend did spray the reel with the salt water wash down by mistake. This would make a great heavy duty fresh water reel.

Fantastic value at 45 + tax

Honestly, when it's on sale don't even waste your time looking for other reel. You will find NOTHING so smooth and tight for 45 dollars! I have 2x Fox FS12000, 2xDaiwa Vadel 4000, 2xDaiwa Caldia 4000, 2x Shimano Stradic (hagane) 4000 and now grabbed this reel in 4000 size just because it was on 50% off. I think this reel is a OK priced and MSPR and 45 is simply a steal. This reel is almost as smooth as my 200 dollar daiwas but is not magsealed so it will get dirty eventually and deteriorate, but when u compare them as new u can't tell much difference. Stradic is smoother than this, but has some resistance when u reel, and this exceller reel reels with almost no resistance - very pleasant. Using it hardcore - catfish and carp!

First good reel
2 June 2019

I got this reel as an introduction to fishing. I've never spent much on rods and reels but wanted a decent one as my first big purchase. I'm super cheap and definitely wanted as much bang for my buck as I could muster. I was not dissapointed. This reel performs wonderfully. I've been using it to catch bass on topwater. I also used it to fish for flounder while vacationing in Savannah. Overall it has worked flawlessly. Not sure what everyone else is talking about bout concerning the salt water. Love this reel and would definitely buy it again.

NICE REEL FOR THE MONEY
6 May 2016

I DONT THINK I COULD FIND A BETTER REEL FOR THE $50 I SPENT FOR IT. I PUT IT ON AN 8FT SEELHEAD ROD AND IT SEEMS OK. I WOULD OF PREFERED A SLIGHTLY SMALLER REEL, MAYBY A 2500, BUT I WANTED A LITTLE MORE LINE CAPACITY.ITS VERY SMOOTH AND QUIET. GREAT CASTS.THE ONLY DRAWBACK IS THE HANDLE IS JUST A SMIDGE LONGER THAN IM USE TO. OTHER REELS I HAVE, HAVE A SLIGHTLY SHORTER HANDLE. I WILL GET USE TO IT THOUGH.IF YOUR IN T HE MARKET FOR A REEL THIS SIZE, DONT WAIT, GET IT WHILE ITS ON SALE. OH, THE SERVICE FROM DICKS IS GREAT.

Not what you would expect from Daiwa.
15 October 2016

I have 2 Exceler 4000 reels, and both reels had not lasted 7 days catching Spanish Mackerel in the Gulf of Mexico. The reel is not rated for saltwater, but basic daily maintenance by rinsing with fresh water should keep any reels functional for at least 1 season. Also, the mackerel fights very hard, but a dozen or so 24" (2.5 lbs) mackerels should not ripe the main gear from slipping while retrieving and fighting the fish. The condition got worse and worse, and the gears started to slip and grind while retrieving without a fish on the line.On a brighter note, I was able to tell the drag was working nicely before the main gears went out. They don't have the smoothest drag in the world but very predictable.

This is a nice real for $49. But at retail this reel needs more than 4 bearings??! Not very smooth to crank. Reel is on the heavy side and could lose some weight. Fit and finish is good. Handle is good and soild. Why do cheaper diawa reels have 6-10 bearings?? I bought this on sale, but wish it was a bit smoother to turn. My diawa procaster and ballistic are silky smooth. Daiwa blows shimano out the water in choices and value.

Smooth as silk
25 February 2017

I have Shimano Stradic 5000 reel that cost me four times as much as the Daiwa Excelier 4500. This spinning reel is a little heavier, but operates just as smoothly as the Shimano I bought three years ago. The shimano is due for an overhaul, and it will cost me over $40.00. I paid $45.00 for this brand new Daiwa(two for the price of one promo) and it is every bit as good as the Shimano. Plus, it holds a hundred yards more of 15# braid. Wonderful bonus to have. I am very happy and satisfied with my Daiwa Excelier, and will recommend it to others, especially at the promotional price.

disappointing

Bought the 1500 model because it listed to fill with a 100 yds of 6# mono. The capacity on the reel itself showed the fill as a 135 yds of 6# mono. I was willing to overlook that but when i tried opening and closing the bail it took a little jiggling of the handle to get the bail closed. Then the bail just froze in the open position. I had ordered the reel on line for store pickup so everything I discovered about the reel was while i sitting in the Cabela's parking lot. Too convenient. I walked back in the store and returned the reel for a refund.Footnote. Cabela's was very easy to work with!
