I got the 5000 two years ago, it is a great reel for chunking clams or mackerel from the beach for stripers and blues. A bit heavy for tossing plugs and eels all night and not durable enough for consistent dunks. I have caught many 150 pound sharks on this from the beach and it handles those great. Drag is exceptional. That being said it can not be fished hard in the surf. I was using the saltx as my wetsuit rock hopping reel and one night that went down so I switched to the saltist. The reel now sounds like an old penn but still performs well. I would assume a few more nights of fishing like that and the reel would lock up. This reel is a great once a trip dunker and for the money is unrivaled.

This really is an incredible reel. I have used the old saltist but this mq leaves it in the dust. Super smooth, i pulled it apart straight away ( i always do!) to see whats going on inside … and it didnt disappoint. Its big. The gears are big, the pinion gear solid. No wobble.I dropped 30lb on it and the first fish i got was a good 70cm kingy. The drag was smooth, reel didnt contort or bend. The fish was a good solid one so it tested it how i wanted it.Stoked with the purchase

I found the Daiwa Saltist 5000 lived up totally to my expectations, it actully surpassed my expectations, it ballaces perfectly with my MH 10ft6in Senso Sandstorm Rod. Also from Fredy's, the lightness and ballance of this rod and reel combination allowed me to easily cast and retrieve all through a 3 hour session without wanting or needing to put the rod down. I have spooled it with 20lbDaiwa JBraid and it is also a perfect line class for the scale of fishing that i do, it will easily handle any large Snapper or kingfish or Salmon, that i'm likely to hook, hopefully, lol. All in all i am very happy with my purchase's from Fredy's Tackle. Tight lines..David..Davo Whittingham😎🎸🎣🤿

I must premise this review with a little history - I have fished offshore SoCal for 30+ years. Always with conventional gear. The number of "Coffee Grinder" jokes I have been a part of are too numerous to count. I have seen spinning reels blow up, get smoked, and basically be the butt of every joke on SoCal Sport Boats. Fast forward to today and I am a PROUD owner of this reel. Technology has come a long long way! I got this reel as an experiment - basically to have a light setup for casting/fly lining a small chovie when on the flats - Bass/Cuda/Tails...Typical summertime 3/4 day fair. I wanted something to pair with a soft 197 style blank, fishing 15 or 20lb leader. I wanted something to pair with a soft 197 style blank, fishing 15 or 20lb leader. This setup is solid - casts a light bait like a dream, and has the braun needed if a breezing Yellowtail decides to inhale my offering. WIth 30lb braid I get 300 yards, plenty of drag, and smooth operation that I have only experienced from my conventional setups. Having this setup has turned a slow day of small fish into a jackpot trip, being able to sling a light bait to the outside where small packs of breezing yellowtail are hanging out. Never an issue during the fight, and most of all, offers an option to friends and family who are not as comfortable fishing a conventional setup to join me in a day of fun on the water...Looking forward to later this summer battling football yellowfin on this rig. Yes, there are higher quality spinning reels out there - but would be paying north of 500$ to get better quality. For less than half that, you get an extremely capable reel that will do everything you need in a 20lb rig for a local SoCal trip. Super satisfied!
I have spent far too much time researching the most cost effective and durable reels for inshore or just rugged fishing trips. I don’t like having to worry about my gear as I continue to master this sport. Every thread I followed lead me to this reel and I am NOT disappointed in the least. Between light, tough, beautiful, fine tuned, smooth and comfortable, I am in love with this thing and I plan on switching my heavy rigs to the Diawa Saltist as well.Solid+smooth+sexy=Saltist
Under $200 is a relatively good deal for this reel, but it does have its flaws and I wouldnt buy another. It feels strong, the materials/finish is very high quality and the colors are awesome. However, the composite rotor is too flexible. When you tighten the drag all the way to 15 lbs and pull hard, the force from the line bends the rotor into the reel and it scratches the edge of the reel as it spins. Also, a few fish in, the handle became hard to turn while I was reeling, then it completely came loose. It was installed carefully and very securely and is threaded backwards so this shouldnt happen. Im still puzzled as to what caused it, but I re-tightened it and it seems to work fine since then. Overall, its a nice reel but after use, its not sturdy enough for fish ... MoreUnder $200 is a relatively good deal for this reel, but it does have its flaws and I wouldnt buy another. I wouldnt spend the money again. It comes with a good warranty but that doesnt help you when youre on the lake and lose a trophy fish.
I have been using the 3000 series reels for black bass fishing in Kentucky. I fish from a 12 foot Hobie kayak on large reservoir and carry only one medium spinning rod and reel as there is little room for much else. I intend to use them in Florida brackish water as well. The saltist series reels are tough, smooth and reliable. I will try the 2500 for casting slightly lighter/smaller baits as the summer approaches. I use 20 lb. braid, which spools well, with a fluorocarbon leader. The drag systems are smooth and can be finely adjusted. This is important when drifting around in a kayak. Great, dependable, no frills reels for the price!
I had reviewed, tested and compared the Daiwa Saltist 3000 to other similarly priced reels at a retail sporting shop prior to ordering it from EBay, so I had a good idea of the quality this reel contains. However, as the saying goes, the proof is in the pudding, so I put this reel to the test here in Southeast Florida. I've paired it with a 7'-6" medium rod with a fast tip, and it is a perfect fit. I have already caught Spanish Mackerel, Pompano and Bluefish with this set up, and the reel has definitely lived up to its reputation. It has strong cranking power, a very smooth drag, and it is easily one the smoothest operating spinning reels I have ever owned. I feel very confident that this reel will hold its quality for a few years, and the MagSeal protection will ... MoreI had reviewed, tested and compared the Daiwa Saltist 3000 to other similarly priced reels at a retail sporting shop prior to ordering it from EBay, so I had a good idea of the quality this reel contains. I feel very confident that this reel will hold its quality for a few years, and the MagSeal protection will ensure I won't have to worry about saltwater splashing or sand intrusion. Bottom line, this is one of the best saltwater-rated spinning reels in the market for the money. I highly recommend it. I will be purchasing a 4000 series version of this reel within the next month.
One of my "run and gun" reels for offshore fishing. My two others are 6000. Really nice reel with a solid drag system. Great line capacity too (braid). Use this reel mainly as one of my run and gun reels for offshore fishing. This being my largest spinning reel for that purpose. Good solid drag as well as great line capacity too. I've fished with this reel for about three years now on a regular basis with a maintenance schedule and never ever had any negative issues with it. And a really great price for what you're getting especially compared to the price of other reels in the same category. Highly recommended!
I bought this reel (4000 size) a couple of months back. I only had been able to test it out on smaller fish. Sand trout, catfish, perch, and even puffer fish. I even caught a stingray with it. I have recently started catching red and black drum with this reel on a 9-ft surf rod. I use 40-lb braided line and roughly get 230 to 260 yd depending on what I use. It has a maz 17 lbs Drag but have yet to used max drag. I have caught 10 red and black drum over 23 inches with this reel. They have pulled a lot of drag and it has held up very well. The last fish I caught with it was a 37 and a half inch black drum. It put up a good fight for over 15 minutes. Highly recommend this reel. However I will say that I am planning on stepping up and getting the bigger size to have for ... MoreI bought this reel (4000 size) a couple of months back.
