Each DANIEL SMITH Watercolor stick is about 3 full pans of DANIEL SMITH Watercolor paint, which makes it a terrific value. The DANIEL SMITH Watercolor Sticks have the same properties of granulation, transparency, staining and lightfastness as the matching colour does in the DANIEL SMITH Watercolors in tubes because they are made with the same pigment. Watercolor Sticks also offer the same superior intensity as DANIEL SMITH Watercolor Paints. No clay fillers or wax of any kind, so they release their pigment easily just like the dried DANIEL SMITH Watercolors in your palette do into rich, vibrant colour. Paint & Mix – directly from a Watercolor Stick by applying a wet brush. Perfect for Plein air and travel. No watercolour palette is needed. Unique Drawing Tool – Watercolor Sticks are an expressive and fun tool for drawing directly with watercolours. Comfortable to hold and the tip can be sharpened for a more precise drawing tip. When sharpening, be sure to save the shavings, those are pure DANIEL SMITH Watercolor! You can add water to the shavings and turn them into liquid paint in a small dish or container. With DANIEL SMITH Watercolor Sticks you can: Draw directly onto dry or wet paper for different line characteristics. Soften your lines with a wet brush. Blend colours with your wet brush both on the paper and Stick. Draw onto paper, then, with a wet brush, take up Watercolor Stick pigment and paint from that like you would with paint in a pan. Add water to create light washes using your brush. You can build up layers using the Watercolor Sticks for rich, saturated colours. Draw over painted areas with the Watercolor Sticks adding detail or line work. Create texture by applying the Watercolor Sticks in different ways both wet or dry. DANIEL SMITH Watercolor Sticks are an expressive addition to every artists’ palette – adding more creative possibilities!

I only use Daniel Smith watercolor and stick mainly to primary/essential mixing kit. Purple is hard to make vibrant and this is just what I needed. I wanted to try the stick, didn't need a large tube so I bought the Imperial Purple. I appreciated the range of choices. The stick is intense and easy to cut into pieces. I cut off what will fit into my palette and stick it down with water. PERFECT!!

These are definitely professional because they are loaded with pigment and have gum arabic as the vehicle. When you then dip your brush in water and touch the color on your watercolor paper, it explodes in vibrant colors! Very impressive. What I've found out is that if you apply the colors too thick, and then run your brush over them, they don't see to want to become like watercolor. Better to apply these sticks lightly and the will become watercolor like better. You can also dip them (tips) into water and then draw-it will be like a wet crayon. I have not figured out all the ins and outs of these yet, however. Titanium Buff for some reason seems difficult to use. And by the way, why aren't the pigment numbers listed for each of these sticks like they are for the ... MoreThese are definitely professional because they are loaded with pigment and have gum arabic as the vehicle. As always the Daniel Smith products function at the highest level: vibrant colors and have great watercolor properties. The watercolor sticks require a slight shift in use, but then function fully.
Beautiful color bordering on fuschia. Great for mixing up rosy on children's portraits, cherries, apples, rhubarb. Doesn't disappoint.
I am an Urban Sketcher. These sticks can be sliced and pushed into half pans or smaller arttoolkit pans. Very economical and exactly the same as the tube or half pans..
I love Daniel Smith watercolor sticks. Especially those that have pure mineral composition. I hope they make more colors!
Economical way to fill a pan using slices of the stick. One stick = 3 pans. But I like to use it instead of a pan...just rub the end into a drop of water on your palette and you have concentrated pigment without any waste. #sweepstakes
I prefer French Ultramarine to regular Ultramarine because it granulates more (which I admit isn't everyone's cup of tea). I buy the sticks because I find them to be most economical form. A stick is two full pans, and the price is less than a 15ml tube. The stick is also quite versatile. You can cut off a piece to put into a full - or half-pan; you can draw with the stick and use a wet brush to spread it; or you can simply dab your wet brush onto the end of the stick to pick you the pigment.
These are an amazing value! The Daniel Smith sticks have amazing pigment concentration and the price makes them a go-to in building your palette on a budget. I've cut my sticks down to fit into half pans, some are a little softer than others, the Sodalite was almost brittle, but being a Primatek, this is not a surprise. Some colors have a little bit of sticky residue from the label, but hasn't affected performance so far. I'm in a drier climate for now, so no worries about stickiness from humidity. The price of these allowed me to fit in 2 extra colors for this order.
