I bought 2 of these for a Simpson Desert trip. Thought I would try it out prior. First night +4. Gave up at 3am due being cold. Tried again next night with thermals, beanie and air mattress on top of my stretcher. Another 4 degree night. Woke at 3am and put on a jumper. Lasted till 6am. Forced to borrow some quality down bags from a friend. Good luck at -12. Didn't. expect them to be much good below zero but thought they may go close.

A well-made sleeping bag and very roomy, which is why I bought the Darche 1100, but definitely not -12c, which is a bit of a disappointment. Obviously, a lot depends on whether or not you wear sleepwear, and where you are sleeping; vehicle, tent, swag. In long thermals, thick socks and a beanie you'd probably be OK below freezing, but in t-shirt, shorts, thick socks and a sheet liner, on an Oztrail self-inflating mattress (red), I woke up cold in the middle of the night in a tent when it was 5c (note: 5c, not -5c). I had to put on a beanie, and cover the bag with a single duck down and feather quilt to be warm. The panel at the foot of the bag, on top, feels like three layers of hollow fibre, the rest of the bag has only two layers. Comfortable and well made. Warm but I wouldn't take it to -5 let alone -12. I'm. Generally a cold sleeper. Had it in a swag in 2 degrees overnight and was comfortable wearing merino wool thermals and a beanie which also covered my kneck. I could probably tolerate a few degrees colder before I'd need to pile on the added layers of clothing.

I used this bag 2 weekends ago sleeping in a tent in the bush that got down to zero overnight. Wow. I was so happy. I always have cold feet, but with this sleeping bag my feet were so warm I had to open the zip at the bottom!

Despite using a thermal liner, wearing a base layer of merino thermals and sleeping on an insulated self inflating mattress I found I was uncomfortably cold. The following night it got down to -6 degrees. Based on my previous night’s experience I slept in 2 sets of merino thermals, a wool shirt, fleece top and 2 pairs of socks. I had a very comfortable second night. In hindsight I may have been warmer if I had bought the smaller, 900 size bag but this size wasn’t in stock when I bought the 1100. Hi all, we have accrued far too many sleeping bags over the years. I took a liking to the coleman big game series and have a few of them, I thought the heavy canvas style of cover was the GO. However about 18 months ago I bought a Darche cold mountain 1100 -12. The soft shell one. I can tell you without any hesitation that if you operate in cold conditions, like Vic HC or the Simpson etc, you would be hard pressed to find a warmer more comfortable sleeping bag. The soft shell is much better at conforming to your shape and wrapping around your head etc. This is just my 2 cents worth, hope it helps someone. NB I liked the first one so much we bought a second one, we use them like doona's.
The bag is well-presented, made of good quality products, but simply not warm enough. It has double-dacron filler when it should be triple. This is especially so given its size (it takes more heat to warm up a larger bag). This could be the very best bag in the entire world were it to have triple layered dacron rather than just double layered. We would all be prepared to pay the extra money. We don't want to have to take a blanket along with us to pull over the bag when camping: the bag should be enough on its own. Even at home at +10 degrees I have to pull a doona over the top of the bag in my bedroom, so it is definitely not a -5 degree bag. I don't think Darche really understands just how much heat has to be generated for one to drop off to sleep comfortably.

Overall it's very comfortable, on the coldest nights i had to put a blanket between the airbed and the sleeping bag, which I put down to my weight when lying on my side. 4 out of 5 stars, the only con i have is that the zipper can be a bit finicky at times, the trick is to arrange the bed a bit and pull gently. There's a specific clause in the warranty about not covering the zipper if it has been destroyed by excessive force. I think perhaps Darche should look at using a bigger zip with some kind of anti-jamming guide, but I'm quibbling about something that honestly isn't a show stopper at all. I fell for the glowing reviews and switched from 40 years of down to this. Sleeping in 1-2 degree outback temperatures required multiple clothing layers (including fleece) and eventually a doona on top. Horizontal seam design means it's harder to slide your feet all the way in without jamming on a lump of fill. Only plus is the width

The bags performance is still great, however I would like to bring to the attention of buyers a minor issue I found when zipping my new bag to my existing exact same bag which I have had for about 12 months. The new bag is a good 50 to 60 mm shorter. This is evident in the zips and the gold pattern being misaligned. Not a big issue, we have zipped 2 top panels together to use as a doona and it just looks a bit odd. I have emailed Darche to make sure I didn't get a dud bag, they have informed me that, the way the bags are made they cannot guarantee that they are all the same dimensions.
