Cracks despite best efforts

At first, I thought this was the clay to use. The in no time, it started cracking despite my best efforts... despite my going back over it in what felt like a hundred times. And the parts that were cracking were not thin.. no reason for it to do that. It also has a bad chemical smell which made me wonder what it was made of and whether it was safe for my son to even smell it. The packaging didn't give me any insight into that, as it is made from Italy. To me, if they're going to sell in the US, then give US customers better insight to it. Either way, it would not even make a simple bowl like structure without cracking in many places. I finally gave up because I was tired of going back over it with water.

I like working with this paper clay now...
28 January 2022

#sweepstakes So, I tried DAS paperclay a few years ago, and I couldn't stand the smell of it... But now, some years later, I find that I can tolerate it better than I did. The package even has a label now that says "low odor" fomula, so clearly I was not the only one.. It still has an odor, but it doesn't seem as toxic smelling as the previous formula. I still prefer to work with it outdoors when I can, because my studio does not have great ventilation. But smells aside, I do really enjoy working with this clay. I am not able to do regular kiln ceramics at this time, so DAS is my alternate medium. I got a package of white and terra cotta. I like to knead the workable clay first really well, maybe that's from my days as a ceramicist. But I find that it helps with more intricate modeling and detail. And I keep a spray bottle on hand to keep the clay moist and pliable, even a little tacky. I let my bird sculptures air dry outside for about a week. They don't actually need that long to cure, but I do that just so there is no hint of a smell. Next I am going to paint them with flashe paint.

I love this material!
8 August 2019

DAS modeling clay is a dream to work with. It's completely manipulatable, just like regular clay but you don't have to have it kiln dried to finish your product. The air-dry capability (takes about 24 hours) of this product makes it super easy to use and complete a sculpture. It's fantastic. The other great thing that I've discovered is that even once the clay has completely hardened, you can still add to it later. Totally amazing product that creates a great surface, from smooth to ruff, very versatile. It's the best of the air-dry clays that I've come across yet after years of searching and I will continue to buy as many as I can. Love this stuff.

It's "meh"
10 April 2014

It worked for what I need it for. It was a pain to use though. It is heavy. I almost thought it was oven bake clay. By the way the packaging is in a lot of European languages, except English. I had to look it up online to see how to use it. The fact that it was takes about a whole day to dry is annoying too. If I wanted my beads to be heavy oven bake clay would have been better for me since it would dry much faster. Cracks are visible but nothing a layer of paint couldn't fix.Basically if you are stuck with it, it will do but I would never recommend it.

Love this clay
13 June 2023

We get this clay a lot as there are so many things which can be made with it; candle holders, decorations, lanterns… it’s easy for little hands to work with too, both my 3 and 6 year old love using it.

Really good clay!
21 September 2018

Eye have used this product MULTIPLE times to sculpt things for my shop! But it has inorganic fillers and eye am trying to go more towards a vegan/organic option for air dry/porcelain clay! But this works really well! Takes water to mold it and keep it flexible but for an air dry clay this is great!

Timeless
7 March 2024

I turn to Blick whenever we are onto a new art pursuit. Both the vast variety and affordability of products never cease to astound me. This modeling clay has been a steadfast material in our home since my toddlers learned to coil. Many of our masterpieces have been tragically lost to the throws of our youngest. Some have survived and have made grandparents cry with delight upon receipt. If you're making people cry with your art, you know the materials are good quality. My mom got her art materials from Blick, I get mine from Blick, and I hope to pass the Blick devotion down to my own children. #blicksweepstakes
