The DBX 266xs is the industry standard in live and studio compression. I used this unit at a live gig just last night and it performed flawlessly. We are using this unit with two wireless lavalier mics used by trainers presenting in hotel ballrooms and consider it a bargain for how much performance improvement it has yielded.After watching a few YouTube videos I was able to configure some defaults for vocals and then fine tune using the meters and my ears.We have much better control now and fewer requests to make it louder but also not feed back while the person is standing in front of the PA while also making it not so loud while the presenter is shouting GET READY TO ROCK AND ROLLLLLL! or whatever at the beginning of the event.

Unit works exactly as you would expect, perfect for any professional mic work - reduced danger of clipping as well throughout your signal chain. Improved the sound in my professional gigs no end, couldn't work without one for speaking events. Would be just as at home in a band setting. Not sure what the other reviewer is talking about at all - think he might have what this does confused with a particular effects pedal. This is exactly what a rack mount compressor should be, from the company that originally invented them, and the best in this price range by a mile off.
I bought this compressor, at the recommendation of a friend, to level out the extreme voice volume fluctuation of my pastor. I have been extremely pleased with the result...exactly what I wanted. The pastor can now be clearly heard all throughout the chapel without me having to try and manually adjust his volume ups and downs. It takes a little time to set this up to get just the right wireless mic input into the compressor, but the result is noise free and evenly adjusted volume. On the recording, I hear no noise and the quality is excellent. I received instant comments from many worshippers on the improvement. I could not be happier!!

My thoughts: This hardware is incredibly well built and solid. It will certainly take a beating and last a lifetime. It is easy to use, the layout makes intuitive sense and it was obviously built for ease of use. Additionally, it does what it says it does: compresses and gates sound. However, this is where the unit becomes average. I bought it specifically for vocals and unless you are only planning on the most subtle of compression, it certainly affects the warmth of your signal in a noticeable way. Conversely, you CAN set it to do this if your application calls for higher level on/off thresholds and it still works very smoothly.Ease of Use:One has a choice of automatic settings, stereo coupling where only the channel 1 adjusts take effect, or run it in dual mono with independent left/right processing. If the input level is in the correct range, the automatic 'over easy' feature just runs with it. If you want more control, then start twisting the knobs to your taste.Quality:I like the feel of the adjustments and the LED metering does a spot on job of reporting what your input and processing settings are doing. Everything you need ... nothing you don't.The Wow Factor:In the name of 'level control', the penalty of high compression and fast attack/release is distortion and loss of stereo separation. The latest intallations the 266XS have resulted in some of the best sounding stereo air chains I have heard in a long, long time. So, unless something else shows up, this is the unit that's going to replace the gritty legacy stereo processors.Overall:When it comes to AGC, I believe that 'less is more'. If you are unlucky enough to experience those same symptoms, then at least you will know what the likely cause is, and more importantly, what's involved in fixing it.
