Something fishy . Sorry, I had this tin mackerel sample in the pantry for a few months, I didn’t want to make anything fishy and could only think of making fish patties which take me a couple of hours to make, and I couldn’t do it. I was getting scared that this tin mackerel would run away with the tin tuna sitting next to it in the pantry, so today I thought I’d finally make somethingIt is 425g tin and I used the can opener to open and emptied the tin onto a shallow bowl. I read that these fish bones are good for you, so I just squish the soft bones down with a fork to make them smaller and not noticeable when eating. I used the fish to make patties by cooking some spices, diced onion, garlic and ginger paste, dried red chopped chillies, and some boiled potatoes and added some frozen corn. The fish pieces were a little tough, similar to other mackerel tin fish I’ve had. I made it dry in the pan and added the mashed potatoes and dipped into whisked eggs and panko breadcrumbs. For some reason, it always takes me a long time to make this from start to finally shallow frying the patties. The fish is packed in Thailand from multiple origins, so no idea ā€ā™€ļø where it’s from. I am not sure if I’d buy this as I like to know where the tin fish is from. I usually buy Alaskan salmon for my fish patties. This tin costs $2. 70, which I think is pretty reasonable for this size. I tasted the patties masala mix in the pan when it was in the tomato sauce, and it was tasty, and I didn’t add any additional salt to the fish mixture. This tomato sauce tin could be used with some pasta or just cooked in the pan like I did and have with some toasted bread too. Thank you, appreciate the sample.

Nutritious Mackerel. Mackerel is high in protein and Omega 3 and this product has a 4 star health rating It's a large 425 gram tin so will provide at least 3 serves. The label is bright and colourful with blue for the ocean, red tomatoes and the fish all looking good. It states that the mackerel is wild caught in the North Western Pacific Ocean so my first thoughts are China but could be Korea or Japan but at least it's more specific than multiple origins. Packed in Thailand makes sense. The fish comes sort of whole which I prefer because it can be broken up if you wish or eaten as is. It had a good flavour that wasn't too fishy and there was plenty of sauce to flavour it and keep it moist. Bones are very nutritious and they're included. I liked the flavour but was happy to try a little and gave some to my husband to have on a sandwich. He added a little of the sauce to his sandwich and enjoyed this fish. There are a few big pieces left for another meal or two. It would be great broken up on a seafood pizza or on top of a salad, or a tomato rice dish Thank you @bunchteam for giving me the chance to try this mackerel. I will buy it in the future.

A nice change of protein. I was a bit apprehensive at first because I have never tried mackerel before and sat wondering how I would use this product. Then I thought that, like other tinned fish, I could use it in a number of ways. Because I was also gifted Turkish Rolls I decided to combine the two. So I toasted and buttered a roll then added a mackerel fillet I had shredded to one half of the sliced roll.. It was an easy and yummy lunch. Next time I might add some salad, or add it to some rice/quinoa. The colours on the tin are bright and appealing, making it easy to find on the shelf. Love that it is a 4 star health rating. The nutritional information is a bit hard to read and I wonder if it would be better to have a lighter blue as a back ground. Having the ...Ā MoreA nice change of protein. Having the mackerel packed in Thailand from multiple sauces is a bit off putting. I'd like it to state where the product came from. Upon opening the tin all I could see was the sauce, which appeared to be quite runny, but when I tipped the contents into a container I was pleasantly surprised at the ratio of sauce to fish. I would however like the sauce to be a bit thicker. There is enough in the tin to last a number of meals - especially as my son wouldn't eat itAs a bonus the cats loved trying bits of it, they even knocked the can off the bench to lick up what they could. This is not a product I would keep in the cupboard but I would consider buying it in the future.

Cat food - winning. Well what can I say, I requested the family join me in the kitchen and sample this tin of cat food.. I guess that statement was inviting according to their faces. my daughter and I didn’t mind the taste so much, the tomato sauce is nice and mild - quite a pleasant sauce actually. My son hated it. The cat meowed a lot and was desperate for either attention or his sample. surprisingly quite a lot of fish in the tin, however my huge pet hate BONES. If we buy fish and chips and I find a bone it’s months before I can even think of eating fish again, huge no no for me. This has bones and spine yuck…. Holy mackerel, where’s the warning ā›”ļø label. Never have I tried mackerel, and after this sample I know I won’t again. You need to use a can opener to open the tin, the smell of fish & tomato sauce hit me. The tomato sauce completely covers the fish, like they are swimming in it. I emptied the mackerel into a bowl, and it was not appealing in any way. There was 4 largish pieces. The bones in the mackerel are edible as per the label. I tasted the tiniest piece, and did not enjoy it all. Not sure if it was because of the tomato sauce, or the smell that put me off. While I enjoy tinned tuna, sardines & oysters, mackerel might be an acquired taste. Reading other reviews, interesting to see how people added to pasta, or made fish Pattie’s. $2. 70 for 425g. Good source of protein & omega 3, low in fat. I sautƩed some red onions and sliced chilli before adding the contents to reheat the mackerel and sauce. Firm fleshy mackerel with soft edible bones. The fish was tender & moist compared to some tinned tuna which can be quite rough in texture. The sauce was a bit watery. Even though it's not so rich in tomato flavour, at least it's not too sweet compared to some other canned tomato flavoured fish. My husband and I both enjoyed the dish. Economical & convenient. No artificial flavours, colours or preservatives. Unfortunately not certified sustainable seafood source. I've tried the one in oil which I prefer as it has more options in its use and no added sugar.

Nice Taste. I don't think I've ever tried mackerel before so once again Bunch has taken me somewhere new! I have mixed feelings about this product though so let me break it down:The Good: it does have quite a nice taste - different to similar canned fish like salmon and tuna and can be cooked in a similar way. I made mackerel patties which I breadcrumbed and fried and the consensus was that they were quite tasty. The Not as Good: No ring pull always earns a product demerit points in my books - having to dust off the can opener is just a tad annoying but it's a minor point. The mackerel look like a giant sardines with a backbone you want to remove though they seem soft and edible like salmon bones. But removing the bones means navigating the tomato sauce it's floating in which makes it a bit of a messy process. I guess the idea is you cook the fish in the sauce but I just added breadcrumbs, a mashed potato and an egg to bind it and made patties, sauce and all. There were a few sharper bones which detracted slightly from enjoying the patties also. Overall, ok but probably would not purchase in the future.

Saucy little fish bites. I had not tried mackerel before myself but have purchased mackerel in water for my dog as it is relatively cheap & good for her skin with the omega 3's. I love most canned fish products such as tuna, salmon & even sardines are OK but found this a little too fishy & there was too much of the tomato sauce for my taste. I tried it on toast & crackers for a light lunch but perhaps would have been better in some type of casserole with rice or noodles. I would need to research some recipes if i was going to try this product again. This product was a great price though but disappointing that it is imported from Thailand. Plenty of fish in the can. This is a large can of fish - 425g and as I'm the only one here who eats canned fish I'll be having it for a few days. Today I had some on toast for lunch. It would go well with salad. I like sardines and pilchards in tomato sauce. This is similar, maybe not as strong a flavour. The tomato sauce could be thicker. It comprises 40% of the can. The health rating is 4 stars, being high in protein and a good source of omega 3. There are no artificial colours or preservatives. Not so fishy. I was sooooo nervous trying this one, I didn’t really know how to eat it but hubby came to the rescue. We put the fish and sauce into a bowl and mixed in some soy sauce and a little lemon juice and served it with rice. The fish itself wasn’t as fishy tasting as I had thought it would and it’s reminded me slightly of tuna. Before I added the soy sauce and lemon I tried the tomato sauce on its own and just found it to be salty, with a slight tomato flavour. What I especially didn’t enjoy was the amount of bones in the fish. I hate having to pick at my food and having so many bones was a turn off for me.
