Initial Thoughts:The Denon AVR-X4800H is a feature rich 8K AVR that powers through my 7.1.2 surround system without any external amplification. Movies are rich and dynamic. Music is clean and detailed. Initial setup and integration activity took me about two hours. It took the first month to fully realize the system in my 18’ L x 11’ W x 7’ H 7.1.2 home theater. The Denon is so feature rich that I am still adjusting, trying new sound modes, and tweaking the system to dial in the very best my system has to offer. The Denon was a simple drop-in replacement for an older Pioneer Elite VSX-90 AVR. My current system has a solid front bed layer stage of B&W 702 S2 L/R and the B&W HTM71 S2 center. The surround speakers are more of a patchwork of speakers including two B&W 606 Signature speakers as side surrounds, two B&W HTM 600 series center channels for rears, and a pair of SVS Prime bookshelf speakers as front elevation speakers. I am using an SVS PC-4000 sub to round the system. Audyssey MultEQ XT32 did a pretty good job of integrating the various speakers and providing a solid sonic presentation.The Denon includes a calibration microphone and an adjustable cardboard microphone stand to perform the Audyssey MultEQ calibration. The microphone will also screw into a standard camera tripod. This is not a calibrated mic so you will not be able to use it with the full paid version of Audyssey MultEQ-X for Windows or with Dirac Live. Audyssey MultEQ XT32 runs a test tone, per speaker, across eight different spots around your listening position. In my case, Audyssey ran 80 separate test tones. The calibration process took me about 10 minutes to set up my tripod, mic, and pre-mark my eight measurement positions. Running through the calibration test tones took another 10 to 20 minutes.The last major item I checked was my speaker crossover frequencies for each speaker. Audyssey set my L/C/R speakers to full range which is not correct. Instead, I set them both within 10Hz – 20hz of the manufacturer’s stated lowest frequency range. And then set the high-pass filter to the sub to 150Hz. THX recommends setting all crossovers to 80hz. And this is a good guideline and will work in most instances. In my case, I chose to experiment with the crossover points.The Denon is only capable of powering 9 speakers but can process a total of 11 channels. There are 11 unbalanced pre-outs on the back of the AVR which allows for external amplification and expansion to a the full 11 channels. My goal is a 7.2.4 system, so it is important to me to have room to grow. The X4800H supports every known multi-channel format known to man, I think. There are a lot of them. I do not have room to cover them in this review. Download the 336-page user’s manual from Denon’s support site to review them for yourself. I think you will find a few sound formats and speaker configurations that will work for your unique situation. I’ll just say that Atmos, DTS, and Aural overlap on a surprising number of speaker configurations.Movies:Movies are pure enjoyment. The Denon has enough oomph in the monolithic amplifier section to swing dynamically from the quietest sound to a full crescendo in an action movie without missing a beat. The Denon really shined with MadMax Fury Road. The scene at the beginning of the movie where the zealot’s chase after Furiosa’s hijacked war wagon is replete with roaring engines, tires kicking up dirt, and a flame throwing guitar solo! The scene ends with Furiosa driving through a tornado hellscape that is rich, authoritative, precise, and sonically frightening! The sound scape was so enveloping and detailed that I felt like I was in the tornado sandstorm. At no point did the Denon succumb to the demands of the movie.Music:The Denon does an excellent job with my CDs, the HEOS streaming app, and with Apple Music. I mostly listen to Apple Music over Air Play 2. For example, Bach’s Toccata & Fugue in D Minor BWV 565 is a very popular organ piece that most people would recognize when heard. The Denon did a masterful job here. The organ was clear, clean, precises, and never showed any signs of distortion or dips in performance. At volume, this is a powerful piece and the Denon was on the ball. Now, in contrast, I did have a Marantz Cinema 50 in my theater prior to owning the Denon. The Marantz was sloppy at best and inaccurate at worst. It is one of many traded in the Cinema 50 for the X4800H.Overall, any music I threw at the Denon played wonderfully and brought the best out of my system. I have nothing to complain about. I listened to a number of classical pieces, classic rock, electro swing, Jazz, Techno, hard rock, and modern pop. The Denon did a wonderful job in all instances. One thing to be aware of is that the Denon will not make poor recordings sound better. It is not magical.Additional Costs:Audyssey MultEQ Editor app is an extra $20 and only operates from a cell phone or tablet. A step up is Audyssey MultEQ-X, found in the Microsoft store, which costs $200 plus an extra $80 for the special calibrated mic that must be purchased separately. Finally, Dirac Live is $260 for a limited bandwidth license and $350 for full bandwidth. Dirac Live also requires a separate calibrated microphone that can add an additional $150 to the enterprise. I also heard that Dirac will be releasing a version that will include subwoofer(s) calibration that will cost even more. This is not a Denon exclusive phenomenon. However, it does show the rise of software as a service within the home audio space. It also shows that you can spend an infinite amount of money to squeeze that little bit more out of your system. Now, do you need any of this to get a great theater experience? No, you do not. However, for the $2500 asking price, Denon should have include the $20 license for Audyssey MultEQ Editor app.Additional Controls:The Denon control panels and options can be accessed and controlled via the remote and the TV screen, Denon AVR mobile app, or connecting directly to the receiver via a web browser. What you see on the screen is mostly what you see in the apps. I say mostly because there are some differences in layout and presentation. They are all easy to navigate once you know what you are looking for. Keep in mind that the 336-page user’s guide will be your best friend for a while. The benefit here is that you can disable the LCD screen while watching movies in a dark room and use another device to tune the receiver as needed. Personally, I would rather have a lighted remote control but there are benefits to using a cell phone or computer to control the system. Just keep in mind that a bright cell phone screen or wiping out a laptop can and will kill date night faster than you can say, “hey, can you get me a beer while you are up?” So, please Denon, backlight?Final thoughts:I am very happy that I settled on the Denon X4800H and look forward to getting years of enjoyment out it.

If your thinking of a Denon model in 2023 you should stick with one like this that now has the new graphical user interface, has a paid upgrade capability to Dirac Live room correction which is superior to Audyssey, 4 subwoofer preouts with a new feature that lets you put a subwoofer in all 4 corners of a room and the bass output of channels on that side of the room will localize the bass out of the nearest subwooofer. This receiver also has 5 fully featured HDMI 2.1 inputs. Allows for you to set any and all channel pairs to pre-out only mode. Also has a 100% pre-out mode where it turns off all internal amplification.I give this receiver 4 stars only because Audyssey can be a bit of a pain to get things sounding great. ... I have mine paired with an Outlaw 5000x amplifier and the added external amplification brings clarity and precision that is worth it.Denons run hot so always make sure you put them in well ventilated spaces with front and back open to ventilation. Would not ever fully enclose a Denon or any receiver.I returned the Denon 4700 to get this. It was a good move as the 4700 only had one modern HDMI 2.1 port and didn’t have the new user interface or other features like Dirac Live upgrade path.

Been keeping an eye out for the Denon X3800H for nearly a year . The specs are just what I was looking for but prices were around the £1400 mark , and then going down in price slowly over few months . When Richersound had this on sale for £699 , it was a no brainer . Bought straight away and 2 days later it arrived. I always leave in box for a day so that the temperature is the same and then connected al speakers etc up and installed firmware . The GUI is so simple to use and follow . I had done it all and calibrated the sound etc within an hour .I selected a 4K Atmos /Dolby Vision disc and after a little wait , I was blown away at the sounds that came from around me . I want a well-built unit,that is feature rich and has all the necessary technology to maximize my Home Theater Experience. This receiver fits the bill on every front!For starters, this receiver is future proof as all 6 HDMI inputs support the newest HDMI standard: HDMI 2.1 (40 Gbps). This updated full 8K AVR features discrete high-current amplifiers on all channels with 4 ohm low-impedance drive capability for a 125 watt/ch 9.4 AVR., but the difference we get this time around is in its Monolithic Amplifier layout. The remote is not back lit, a bit cheaper made but you can always get a replacement from Denon if needed.Running the new Audyssey MultEQ XT32 was pretty impressive as it got speaker sizes and crossovers right automatically. Movie vs TV series audio quality really kicked in using Dynamic volume and Dynamic range. I like that the AVR’s video pass through is finally future proof to a large extent compared to the last 8 years years of incremental improvements with multiple AVR models. Yeah it does make one think how much money acquiring different AVRs to be able to pass through what you needed was lost. Biggest change is the inside design is so clean, it makes the the AVR run significantly cooler, barely gets warm compared to say a x4700H or x6700H 2020 models. Is it worth buying even if it is more expensive then 2020 models, heck yeah.
I purchased this receiver for my husband to replace his Marantz 6014. This reciever is far more updated with all the newest technology including 8k Ultra HD ready. While we dont have an 8k TV, he was happy to know that it can handle it for the future. Straight out of the box it was very easy to install and my husband used the Audyssey speaker set up program that made it even easier for set-up.The sound is incredible and is slightly different than the much warmer sounding of the Marantz. However, if its music your looking for then Marantz may seem better whereas we watch movies a lot and the movie sound is far better then the Marantz. We chose the AC Infinity Aircom T9 for venting above the unit, because like the Marantz it gets a bit warm,So far this has been a great system with excellent sound over all and very easy to use and install. We highly recommend Denon and feel no loss from losing the Marantz. By the way, Marantz and Denon are made by the same company, so expect a lot of the same design and system programming. Dirac has finally freed Denon AVR's into something exceptional, not just great. JUST FYI: You'll need a MiniDSP Umik-1 (or version 2, but not necessary), the curve text file from MiniDSP (90 degree version), a microphone stand to place the mic ... You may need to adjust volumes here and there afterward, but you will notice that, wow, this thing sounds WAY better than Audyssey on its very best day in a perfect world with the Apps. I like the unit , but wish I would have called and talked with a rep at world wide stereo. I would have told them the set up that I have and what I was looking for - just to see what unit they would have told me to get .The X3600H is nice - it's made for listening to movies (my opinion) - as soon as you connect everything, do the microphone sound check - go right to Disney plus - turn on a Marvel movie - ?? WOW - the crisp sound , atmos - surround, IMAX - is amazing -I have 4 towers ,front Atmos , 4 - 12" powered subs and center channel .Then you go to the radio - and it sounds like crap - you have to dive into the settings , equalizer, speakers and adjust them to make the music sound good , not great but good .HEOS is worthless (my opinion) I use "Live X ... All radio stations come in only as analog- have not found digital yet - and I have an expensive antenna up in my attics .Some things up - don't be shy - call and talk to a rep at World Wide Stereo and let them help you make the best decision for your set up - I wish that I did .

Just waiting for Direc Live to release in March of '23 lol. Now let me tell you what you need to know about owning this thing. You need great sounding speakers that will probably cost quite a bit more than this (5.1.4 for atmos is my setup), high quality speaker wire and banana plugs, high quality HDMI cables and to do a little research on operating it. Until Direc Live is released you'll be using Audyssey, which is good but with some limitations. You'll need the Audyssey app on a large phone screen or tablet. Set up the speakers, turn off midrange compensation, cap the Eq to 300 hz on each speaker, turn off all ... After you upload your settings to the receiver, go into the receiver settings menu and make sure the volumes actually match and sound good, I usually bump all of them up from default settings that Audyssey selects during setup. Now you need quality sources right? Apple TV 4K, Xbox Series X (Purchase the Atmos App), PC with HDMI, and I'm sure the PS5 is good, just not my cup of tea. If you have a Blu Ray player, find some atmos content. I wouldn't recommend using "smart TV" apps and arc back to the receiver, you don't need that nonsense laggy TV stuff, just get an Apple TV and everything will be seamless (not even an Apple fan, but it's the best streaming device out by far). I am coming from a X3600h and I can say with confidence that now is a good time to make an upgrade. This one is actually made in Japan, not exactly common these days. If you're a Marantz fan it's equivalent to a Cinema 40, except about 1k less lol. Most people that write bad reviews either don't bother to look into what they are buying, how to use it, or went cheap on the stuff you need to let this thing shine such as: speakers, sub, wiring etc. This is an amazing and sophisticated sound computer essentially, a little steep on price but should last you a long long time.

Super impactful, crazy deep and punchy bass that slams you in the chest, crystal clear details with great seperation, and just the best my system has ever sounded to be honest. My lesson, to get the most put of audysee and their dynamic volume implementation, the Denon likes to be played LOUD. Whereas I never felt the need, nor wanted to turn the Onkyo up to 0db volume levels, it just never sounded as good as the Denon did when I cranked the 3800h close to or at reference listening levels.Bass comparison: the Onkyo with the mini dsp had my subs sounding good. The Denon with the built in Audysee xt32 room correction with subEQ brought my subs to another level somehow. I love the minidsp as that magical device had my subs eq'd perfectly flat down to 15hz. On paper, the minidsp should be superior to what audysee xt32 can do for my subs, but in reality my subs have never sounded better! So much slam, punchy, tight sounding bass. Audysee just does something magic for subwoofer EQ. It was so good, my plan to add buttkickers to my theater seats may be on the backburner now as the tactile response from the subs alone was that good! Color me beyond impressed!Conclusion: I couldn't be happier with the Denon. Even though I had a perfectly great sounding and working Onkyo rz830 AVR that I loved, the hefty price of $1500 I paid for the Denon is money well spent in my opinion for my unique setup at least.Hope this helps anyone out there on the fence about buying this receiver.
