I have had amplifiers and sound bars in the past and found myself constantly increasing volume to hear dialogue only to have to turn it down again when special effects kick in as to not annoy the neighbours but that has never been an issue with this amplifier. Denon X4500 - very impressed

The new Audessey room setup was easy to use and made a huge difference to the sound out of the box. I still spent half a day tweaking the settings to what I like but was overall very impressed. The sound - well it's a lot warmer than the Onkyo, and I really like it. It showed just how sharp or rough the Onkyo was, despite being my favourite for over 4 years. The Denon has no problem driving my 5.1.4 setup and really brings the Atmos channels to life. I'm very satisfied with the sound and finally have the feeling of being 'part of the action' I've been searching for for a while. The surround sound is no longer discrete but fills the entire room and transitions are superb, making every effect perfectly placed in 3D space rather than obviously coming from one or 2 speakers. I've also noticed subtle details in movies and music which I never heard before (front and centre speakers are Monitor Audio Bronze 5s) and the balance between the speakers and sub is now excellent (after some manual tweaking). I'd fully recommend X4500 and can see me possibly purchasing Denon again when the time to upgrade evertually comes round. The 4k upscaling also does a much better job of blu-ray and even dvd content than my TV or projector.

Feature packed receiver.

Flexible HDMI switching and good audio performance
30 May 2019

I bought this to replace a Denon AVR-4308 from 2007. The audio specifications of the AVR-X4500H are very similar to it and so far with my 5.1 speaker system the sound quality is comparable. But in other ways the newer AVR is very different. In particular having 7+1 HDMI inputs and 2+1 HDMI outputs is a big improvement over the 4 in, 2 out of the 4308. This allows me to connect a 4K UHD TV and an HD Projector to the AVR and have my UHD Blu-ray player auto switch to the correct resolution depending on which display I use. In addition this AVR has an HDMI passthrough feature that allows the UHD Blu-ray player to play on the TV when the AVR power is off. These two HDMI abilities alone are reason enough for me to upgrade, just for the greater convenience I now enjoy. In ... MoreI bought this to replace a Denon AVR-4308 from 2007. Particularly for 3D audio formats, Amazon Alexa integration (not yet tested), streaming music playback (Amazon Music et al). The new style graphical setup assistant is a joy to use and using the Audyssey speaker calibration is made easier with the included tall microphone stand (but it is only cardboard).I am now looking forward to expanding my speakers to use with Dolby Atmos content and an upgrade to a 4K HDR projector.

Great hardware, poor software.
29 June 2019

When it works, the AVR-X4500H is awesome. When it works.I’ve had mine for a week now and have had a bunch of software issues that are not really acceptable from a machine of this cost and a company of this calibre. The setup process was a doddle. As others have said, the Audyssey EQ system works really well. It all connected to my home network without difficulty and the firmware updated to the latest version. So far so good.Watching movies (Netflix or Amazon Prime via Apple TV 4K) is sometimes ok but fairly regularly the auto switching of HDMI sources doesn’t work. Sometimes it does and other times I have to put the Apple TV to sleep and wake it up again to get the source to switch. Even using the Denon remote to change it doesn’t work. Sometimes it does and other times I have to put the Apple TV to sleep and wake it up again to get the source to switch. Even using the Denon remote to change it doesn’t work. If I find my tv remote and change it to a different HDMI source and then back again to the ARC channel I’ll then get a signal. HDMI control is on as is ARC.Next problem is the auto selection of audio modes. I’ll be watching a 5.1 source but only getting stereo sound. I can manually change to Dolby surround in the settings using the iOS app (which is also pretty poor to be honest) but according to the info screen on the amp, the input signal is just stereo. On 3 occasions since I bought this product a week ago, sound has been lost completely and I’ve had to go back to using the TV speakers. I spent a while going through every setting I could find but all it said was that it was receiving no audio signal. Video was working just fine. After a lot of messing around the only solution I could find was to restore factory settings. I’d saved my config on USB but it was still a pain. Also, for some reason the amp won’t let you load a previously saved configuration until it is connected to your home network. This means digging out your WiFi password and entering it using the clunky on screen keyboard. Why on earth do you have to do this before you load a config with a USB stick physically plugged in to the front?Another irritation is that when listening to 5.1 audio via my Virgin V6 box, the centre channel level is way too loud for my tastes. When watching sport the commentary booms out the centre speaker with almost nothing coming from the stereo or surround speakers at all. No signal whatsoever goes to the sub which stubbornly stays in standby. I can turn it on manually but after a few minutes it turns itself off again as it’s getting no input. The info screen on the amp says it’s outputting to 5.1 channels but clearly it isn’t. My old £250 sound bar gave a more immersive sound when watching the football. I can improve things by manually reducing the centre level but the Denon doesn’t remember settings made for a particular source so the you have to do this each time. It’s really irritating.Overall this is clearly an excellent AV amplifier but is hugely let down by buggy software both on the machine itself and the iOS app. I am planning on returning it in exchange for one from a different manufacturer as it just isn’t a pleasant machine to live with.

High quality receiver, with lots of bells and whistles

Until it died, I used to own the top of the line Denon receiver of mid-2012. I couldn't go top of the line this time, but I did want to go as high as I could this time around. I chose to stick with Denon because I was already familiar with their interface, though I know there are other good choices out there for the money.Due diligence, folks! I view Audyssey as a necessity.I like the Bluetooth connectivity. I have a lot of music stored on my iPhone, and once in a while I like to be able to hear it through this main system. It's nice to be able to do that.It was my fault that I did not research ahead of the purchase to see if HD FM came standard. It does not. I am certainly aware that there are so many streaming options available to me with this receiver, that FM seems out of date to many of you, but here in Chicago we have an excellent radio station in WXRT that I love to listen to at times, and I miss not having the information that HD FM provides. My bad.

Solid AVR but remote is sub-par
2 March 2019

I purchased this AVR-X4500H to replace an old Sony Dolby Surround receiver. The support for the new sound formats is awesome, and the sound quality is very good compared to my old Sony and Adcom system. It is at least as good if not better in audio quality and the surround effects are obviously much improved. My only real complaint so far would be the clunky (awkward & ill-proportioned) remote that lacks back-lighting. A few of the top buttons do light up, and the rest are semi-opaque so it would appear that they would light up if there was a bulb in the lower portion of the remote, which apparently there is not.Having spent $1,600.00+ on a receiver and then having to fumble with the buttons in the dark while watching movies, hitting stop on accident instead of ... MoreI purchased this AVR-X4500H to replace an old Sony Dolby Surround receiver. Does Denon have an in-house back-lit remote available that would work with this AVR? Sad to have a negative feeling about such an otherwise great receiver but at the moment I am having some buyer's remorse over this cheap remote.

Sounded great until it stopped working, 2 units
20 January 2019

I really liked the sound out of this unit, unfortunately the first unit I bought had software issues where the network setup would not function properly and I could not reset the network settings, even with a full reset or firmware update and reset. I returned this to the store after hours of troubleshooting and figured it was a bad unit. The second unit worked for a week and then started requesting a software update. Since everything was working I did not want to tempt fate again and told it to not update. Then the system started going into loops of not responding to the setup commands (remote or on the device itself). It also stopped passing signals when the device was on but will pass them through when the device is off.Now I have no access to the setup menu ... MoreI really liked the sound out of this unit, unfortunately the first unit I bought had software issues where the network setup would not function properly and I could not reset the network settings, even with a full reset or firmware update and reset. After spending hours again trying to get the device working again yesterday the device started an update, so I let it finish and then it worked fine the rest of the evening. When I returned to the unit today, once again it is not working, not passing signal and the setup menu is inaccessible. Tried multiple attempts even with no cables connected and the setup menu remains inaccessible. Not worth the hassle.

Typical excellent Denon quality.

I previously owned a Denon x4400h which was excellent but had an issue with eARC from my LG Oled C965. Richer Sounds sorted me out and I upgraded to the x4500h, which addressed the eARC issue.Apart from the Google assistant feature I wasn't expecting any real difference from the previous model. However, once I had calibrated via the Audyssey MultEQ Editor app both myself and my A/V enthusiast buddies noticed a definite uplift in a more expansive sound stage and better signal steering.Another change which I like is the centre and sub level adjust. Now when you do make an adjustment it alters the main setting in the trim levels accordingly to match. I found the old way of it working independently a little confusing.I'm running a 7.2.4 set up and use a 2 channel ... MoreI previously owned a Denon x4400h which was excellent but had an issue with eARC from my LG Oled C965. Now when you do make an adjustment it alters the main setting in the trim levels accordingly to match. I found the old way of it working independently a little confusing.I'm running a 7.2.4 set up and use a 2 channel power amp to drive the extra 2 channels and the Denon processes the 11 channels and obviously both subs flawlessly. My only slight, very slight niggle is with the newly designed front display panel. The glass/plastic cover protrudes a little bit now which in itself is fine but you do get a reflection of the displayed information across the top. Not a massive issue as I tend to switch the display to off when viewing but may bother those who choose to leave it on.I tend to think that what sets one AVR apart from another in today's market is which Auto Calibration system they use and having experience of most of them I think Audyssey is what tends to set Denon/Marantz apart from the rest. Mult XT32 in my experience is by far the best option amongst this category of AVR, especially the way it handles bass correction.Overall a good powered bit of kit with all the features and future proofing one could ask for. But what i'm really impressed with is it's processing capability, pure audio heaven!
