Latest addition to my watercolor collection: the Derwent Inktense Paint Pan Travel set.Strictly speaking, guess they are not true watercolors. Luckily, this Derwent waterbrush is an exact match to the Sakura Koi waterbrush (even their plug designs are identical), so I have spare caps to correct this oversight. The Inktense line differs from standard watercolors in that their dried washes are permanent. Thus second passes with another color do not mix and glaze beautifully without contaminating each other. The included waterbrush affords adequate control and much convenience while on the move.Just take care to protect the nylon brush head with a cap or make sure that the disasembled brush fits snugly in its compartment without rattling around. This coloring kit is quite fun to use, so it would make great gift for beginners and budding artists. Used the paints straight to sketch the background in color without a black outline in the pop-up card sample below.Young students during this week art camp seemed to enjoy them as well. Drew the griffin and its background with a Sakura Pigma Sensei 06 pigment liner pen. and then colored them both with Inktense washes.

A Must Have! These Derwent Inktense Paint Pans are a must have! The color is rich and the paint applies well. I prefer to use a regular paint brush, but the water pen that comes with it works just fine. I bought the set of 24 colors because I always wish I had more colors, although less colors makes you get on your creative game. The pans are tinier than I thought, but Derwent now offers refills. Beginning artists should use professional products and this is one of them. I can't wait to share what I will create with these paints. #sweepstakes

Recently I purchased both travel sets of the Derwent Inktense paints and have been experimenting with them, and made a paint mixing chart with all 24 colors. The description on the website says that washes of the paints, when dry, can be worked over without lifting the paints. The wash has to be pretty thin and still he undercoat can be worked up with some scrubbing, but you do have to scrub. One question though: what happens when you run out of a color? Are the Inktense blocks supposed to be the replacement, just cut one up and drop it in the pan? Most of the colors in these palettes match, but not all. Nowhere in the descriptions does it say to use the blocks to refill the pans. And the list of pencil colors matches the list of blocks, but still there are a few ... MoreRecently I purchased both travel sets of the Derwent Inktense paints and have been experimenting with them, and made a paint mixing chart with all 24 colors. I purchased this product as an upgrade from using the intense blocks for plein air painting. I can already see that the obvious color choices as illustrated by the color map will help keep the darker colors organized and recognizable. Looks like plenty of space to mix colors in the lid. The water brush and sponge were an added bonus. It's a heck of a deal.
These, too, went with my Derwent push button water brushes on my flight to see my son. The weather was cold and overcast, so stayed indoors and painted. These colors are lovely, and they seem to dry faster than other watercolors, which made them ideal with my travel use. It should be stated that I am not a master watercolor painter, but I found them delightful to use.
My first time trying out the "inktense" paints & I love them!!!I watched a YouTube video before I explored on my own, it was helpful to know the best techniques to use. They flow really smooth & have great colors/value/versatility. I bought the sticks also but this travel kit will go with me on my next trip! I'm 100% sold on this! #sweepstakes
I was really excited to receive the inktense in the pans. However when they arrived I was really disappointed. They came in a container that seems really cheap to me. Not at all comparable to the Derwent standard that I'm used to receiving with their pencils. The box is a flimsy plastic box with a plastic sponge and a very cheap water brush. The lid to the water brush won't stay on the end of the brush when you are using it and I'm sure I will loose it very quickly. Actually I will probably give it to my child to use. The pigments themselves aren't cut to fit in the pans an constantly fall out of the pans anytime the palette is moved. I guess based on how much I enjoy other Derwent products, and how nice I think they are packaged I expected a lot more. I expected a nice metal palette with pigments that fit in their pans and a decent brush! I wish I wouldn't have wasted my money on these! I wouldn't order theses again without seeing them first! I just trusted that because they were Derwent they would be great and I would love them! Not great and I don't love them!
I love this green! It is such a beautiful color on its own and makes such lovely colors when mixing with other colors. I have made a perfect green for an agave plant by mixing it with Chinese white, and adding a little ultramarine to make the shadows. Actually, I love all the Derwent colors and they flow beautifully!
I've now used the inktense pan paints on three paintings and love them so far. It dries permanent so it great for layering, the colors are very opaque but also dilute nicely for a softer watercolor look. Colored pencils also layer beautifully over the top and the white is quite opaque and is an excellent highlight. So far I find the range of colors very useful and when needed they mixed nicely too, I was also happy to see that after the three paintings I've started with it really didn't wear down the pans much, a little goes a long way with these paints! I'm very happy with this purchase! #sweepstakes
I use this for details in conjunction with watercolors. I have had the first set for a few years, and wanted to add the second set. It's very handy to use when I don't feel like breaking out my large set of Inktense blocks. I like that individual replacement pans are available.
