I bought this to play solo. I am 15 hours in playing with my 5 year old son and having a blast. The app makes it so that he and I can play together. He's engaged with the board and dice rolling as well as the on screen combat. Additionally, not having to keep track of all the stats (thank you app) let's us move along quickly enough that he remains engaged. I'm having a blast. There are some cons though:1) I'd not recommend this game if you don't have a way to cast the app to a large screen right by your table.2) This game would be a nightmare to play as a group specifically because of the app.3) The writing is pretty mediocre and stereotypical. Nothing original or memorable.4) There is A LOT of text to read in the app. This is a slog because of #3...so I just ... MoreI bought this to play solo. It's awful for everything else. This game could have honestly been a complete app for $6.99 without the $140 of board game pieces. it feels a lot like a video game and very little like a board game.6) There is not a lot of content for what you pay.All in all this is a keeper at 5 stars for me ONLY because of the enjoyment I get with my son.Otherwise I'd rather play other dungeon crawlers that are more big party friendly and don't have to fiddle with a tiny iPad screen to know what's going on.Fun side note--my boy takes all the descent minis and terrain and builds his own maps and runs his own quests solo. He supplements it with my D&D/Pathfinder stuff and has an absolute blast.I am thrilled to own this game and I'm having a ton of fun with it...but as a traditional board game it isn't great and there are much better options.

Overall this has been a fun game that I have enjoyed playing. The board tiles and underlays are excellent. They allow for maximum versatility, and I much prefer them over the 2nd edition/Imperial Assault puzzle pieces that significantly limited how boards could be put together. I can see a lot of options for custom adventures in the future, which appeals to me. I also love the furniture/doors/obstacles that add the 3d element: this really brings out the game for me and reminds me of Hero Quest, a favorite classic of mine.A lot has been said on the game's artwork--I personally think it looks great, but it wouldn't affect my review if I felt differently, so long as gameplay is good. Regarding the story line: I think it's fine, and never expected it to meet the same standard as a best-selling fantasy novel. As such, I have not been disappointed. Regarding the high-end miniatures, I'm not much of a miniatures painter and so, while the detailed miniatures definitely look stunning, I likely would have traded miniature quality for a lower price. Nonetheless, I'm still content with my purchase. The app is, for me, both a blessing and a curse. I love the element of discovery that you have thanks to progressive map reveals, and half the fun for me is building an elaborate dungeon/forest/whatever in front of you as you proceed through each quest. Be sure to allot a good amount of time, though, because you don't know when a quest will end which can be challenging. Because of the app's excellent ability to keep track of health, statuses, less-important/miscellaneous items, etc., it makes the enemy battles and item purchases less finicky. Keeping this complexity down also allows me to play the game with my young kids, which is a huge bonus (differing difficulty levels also is a huge bonus for this reason). With this said, I do feel that they took item collection too far: I'd be ok with finding equipment and gold alone for future purchases. However, rather than just encountering these, we also find bits and pieces of things necessary to check off the boxes for item recipes. It adds a depth of complexity that may work well in recent RPG video games, but just seems excessive to me in the game. I also have noticed that, because of the app integration, we spend quite a bit of time looking at the screen both inputting and receiving information. The trade-offs are worth it for me, but I understand how this could be a point of frustration for others.Overall, I'm pleased with my purchase and excited to continue playing. My family has also enjoyed it, and I'm excited for expansions, increased material, and even DIY creations to emerge to extend value.

Fantastic "RPG in a box" type game with really immersive map building and exploration. Plenty of tactical options in battle and a real sense of progression with the crafting and feat system. I play this with my wife and we have a blast during every scenario. Characters seem a bit unbalanced, but maybe I'm still figuring out the play styles of each.

I hate apps in board games -- yep, I'm that guy. So why did I pick this up, knowing it an app was essential to the experience? I was looking for a different solo experience, and had some free time on my hands due to the pandemic, so I gave it a shot. This game has exceeded all my expectations. The app handles enough but not too much. The game still very much takes place on the table, and the table presence is great. The artwork, the minis, and quality are top notch. What the app allows is basically a DM for the session that can still surprise you. Where it stands out isn't the tech or the writing, but the scenario design. Without spoiling anything, there are some that truly surprised me. That is what keeps me making this an appointment to play. While I'm not ... MoreI hate apps in board games -- yep, I'm that guy. Without spoiling anything, there are some that truly surprised me. That is what keeps me making this an appointment to play. While I'm not primarily solo gamer, I've been playing this one solo. I tried on 2 player session and it went quite well. I would gladly play it again with more than one, I think I still prefer Gloomhaven for non-solo play. That's not a fair comparison, since although they are both essential dungeon crawls, the meat of the game is very different. Looking forward to where Descent goes next.
In short this game is quite spectacular. The figures are of a decent size and beautifully rendered, with a little work on the occasional join. The scenery is well made, though obviously card, it is sturdy and fits well. The literature is well written, though perhaps a little bit vague at times on some rules. Nothing that can't be worked out.The packaging/box is huge, but you understand why by the time you've made all the scenery up.All told, I have given this 4 out of 5. I'm impressed with the concept, art, mechanics etc, but my cons would be, reliance on an app that may not work all the time, or in the future, and I still balk at paying over £100 for a game like this.
Fantasy Flight has done it again. I have collected and loved playing every Descent game and expansion that has been released. I was excited when they announced the new Descent, Legends of the Dark.I was saddened to see that it was not compatible with the Descent 2 but as FF did a great job of integrating the first Descent into the second edition I wasn't too worried.Getting the box was so exciting and the miniatures are exquisite. The detail and the action poses are outstanding. The art work seemed a bit cartoony at first but I found it refreshing as it makes for a heightened ability to paint and richer creature/character creation in a 3d environment. The cardboard cut outs scratched my itch is several ways. The game allows for you to interact with these environmental elements much better than previously. It always bugged me with other games that had treasure chest or bookshelves in the game area that did not block movement. In LOTD they make those spaces obstacles, nice. The app is excellent! It is fairly easy to maneuver and it track all those things that you don't want to. The adventure mapping and story line is very rich and the app does not take over for you where you want to be in control (figure movement, interactions). You can feel the depth that FF has taken with Terrinoth and expect more to come...I love that it says Act I on the side of the box.
The miniatures are as near GW quality detail as I've seen in a big box boardgame. Seriously huge improvement over previous efforts.Gameplay so far is engrossing. I'm primarily a solo gamer (probably 90% of the time) and not one to have an issue with an app that helps keep everything moving along.About 3 hours into playing and all the minis primed and a couple painted. I'll definitely my money's worth out of this one. Hopefully FFG will continue down this pathI've never played a perfect game of any type so 4 stars is the best I ever give.
Don't understand where the 1 star reviews are. That implies this game is terrible. It is definitely not terrible. Production value is high and I love that it nicely fits in a very large box - something that these larger mini heavy games seem to fail at. It has a great campaign which the pre-teens really enjoyed and I found engaging as well. The systems are reasonable stream lined though if I was to offer one complaint its the storage and organisation of cards between games (considering it is a campaign) - they could do better there. The app is easy to follow and is just really nicely done. Overall a really nice purchase!
I am blown away by the immersion the 3d terrain gives. The minis are the best I've seen from Fantasy Flight Games. It is a fantastic looking game. As far as game play is concerned, I know a lot of people are turned off by the app, but I found it enhances the experience not diminishes it. the combat is great, not deep, but very tactical. I love how you interact with the terrain in this game. The app keeps track of everything so there are no additional cards or other pieces that you have to keep track of. Also, the best part is gameplay goes much faster than other dungeon crawler games (e.g. Gloomhaven). Each turn is fast and efficient. That has never happened in the 15+ years I have been playing board games (started with Runebound). Anyway, I think think this is a great game. You just have to decide if the price point is worth it for you, it was for me and my family!
Pre-ordered, then read a lot of negative reviews about the game before it came out and was worried. Now that I have played it, I am absolutely loving it. Have played with family and friends and everyone has had a blast. If you don't like App integration in your board games, then its not for you. I find, however that the app allows me to keep track of things much better than having a ton of cards all over the place. There are still plenty of cards and tokens to keep me happy. Please keep in mine they are bare plastic right out of the box.
