Extremely reliable and comfortable pack

I don't often write reviews, but the superb quality of this pack compels me! I couldn't be more happy with this pack. I have had the bag for more than two years. In that time, I have run with loads from 5-25lbs about 3 times every week. I often cram more into the pack than is strictly recommended. Despite the continued abuse, the zipper has never popped. The stitching for the zipper (and everywhere else) is still holding strong. The padding in back and straps is still firm. The only thing that has gone wrong is that the waste-strap buckle failed. Customer service promptly supplied a replacement for free with no questions asked, and, in the meantime, I was able to use one of the tie-down buckles as a replacement, so I was able to continue running. That was about a year ago, and the bag is still going strong. The design and manufacture is simple and superb, with each feature showing careful thought. The more you use the bag, the more you realize how much thought went into each little nuance. The zipper pulls are excellent and resilient. The ergonomics of the shoulder straps works very well for me. The mechanism for adjusting the eight of the chest strap works very nicely, but looks like it could be a failure point for the bag -- I have had no problems. One observation about editions: unlike the new version (based on pictures), the version of the pack that I own has two sets of tie-down straps on each side. I often use these to lash a rolled up jacket or shoes to the side of the bag. I don't think I'd be able to do this with the new version, which would be a significant loss of functionality. In any case, this is an excellent bag. If you are a runner or hiker looking for a comfortable, no-fuss pack that can stand up to sustained abuse, do not hesitate.

Fantastic backpack for climbing

I love this backpack. It’s incredibly light and looks great. The 4 loops on the outside of the backpack are perfect for small carabiners to hold my climbing shoes, keys, helmet or any other belongings. I wish the top, open piece opened though because it would prefect to cinch down a rope. But I use it for dirty gym clothes after a training session. Something else that would make this pack perfect is deeper side pockets because my 24 hydro flask doesn’t fit. Bladder pouch comes in handy for that reason. High quality from deuter!

Good lightweight hiking pack with some downsides

This pack is lightweight and very comfortable but has a few downsides:-The front shove pocket is great to have but the way Deuter designed it defeats most of its purpose because it has no stretch to it (items are not secured) and access is quite narrow so even though it's large enough to fit a fleece jacket for instance, it's not possible to insert it.-The top grab handle seems quite flimsy compared to many other bags its size.-The water bottle pockets are quite large thus great if you have a large Nalgene bottle but not snug if you have a smaller one such as a Hydro Flask.

Great Day/Hiking/Farmers Market Pack
9 July 2023

Purchased at REI sale 6 weeks ago. Just got pack from a month in Europe. I wore it every day. Absolutely perfect for day use. I didn’t even know it was there most of the time. Great for items needed during flight. Computer, iPad, Iight weight blanket and jacket for my wife. Room to spare. Compression straps work great and keep the size down. Put maps, tickets in front sleeve for fast access. Small top compartment held suntan lotion, chap stick etc. loaded it up w small gifts all the time. Bottle of wine works great. The lite rests perfectly on my back. Double and top zipper would be very hard to open from rear. Great design, empty it layers flat to about an inch and fit easily between 2 sections of our carry on suit cases..

Great day pack!
9 June 2023

Great pack, best day pack that I have tried. Smart design, super comfortable, and the perfect size (I'm a minimalist, so I travel light). Love the shale color! Wasn't sure about the outer/back pocket, but once I figured out how to best utilize it, I love it! Only a couple MINOR gripes: Wish eh back was a bit more breathable, but still better than my Camelbak. Wish the side mesh pockets were an inch or two taller for longer water bottles, but still works fine.

Great design, though water bottles fall out easily
3 June 2024

Great backpack overall, though a couple of things worth noting: First, water bottles tend to fall out easily from the side pockets, since they loosen up and are not tall. Second, the bladder pocket narrows at the bottom, such that a laptop in a sleeve might not sit well in there. Both of these are important if you're thinking of using this backpack as a daily pack for commuting, which I wanted to do. Other than this, it is great.

Incredibly lightweight
12 July 2023

This backpack is really lightweight and a great size for half day hikes and general day use. It wears comfortably and the back is padded and breathable. It fits my frame well as a 5’3” female. I am pretty picky with the weight of empty packs and this is truly lightweight. It feels like nothing when worn. I love that the inside of the main compartment has a label with some first aid information. It is basic information, but very nice to have if the situation ever arises. There is a small top compartment that can hold keys, valuables, and other small items that you need easy access to. The outer pocket is spacious and feels secure. The pocket is formed by the dark and light colorblocked panels where the logo is. It is easy to put stuff in it, but I do wish to be able to open it up fully with a buckle or through other means. If I could change one thing, it would be to have taller water bottle side pockets. I have a 24oz bottle that is around 10 inches tall. While it technically fits, it does not feel secure enough. The pockets are better suited for shorter water bottles.

Lightest daypack
24 September 2023

I bought this pack a couple weeks ago and am so happy I did! This Deuter 21 is is super light yet comfortable. You can carry everything you need for a day hike. It has two big side pockets and a poker for valuables on top. 21 liters is plenty of room for food and extra clothing. It rides comfortably on your back. This pack comes in two colors and I love the slate. Best light daypack I’ve ever owned!

Previous version was MUCH better
24 May 2019

I was about to buy a second SpeedLite 20 since my original one has served me so well for the past 4 years, but Deuter has eliminated some of the features that made the previous version so durable and useful. The previous version had 2 upper and 2 lower compression straps- these offered a very useful way to provide extra security to large water bottles, and to strap on picnic blankets etc. Unfortunately the new version only has the upper straps, the straps are more narrow, and there is no abrasion-resistant flap reinforcing the compression strap attachment points. Samples I have seen in store feel much more sloppily sewn and the fabric feels cheaper.I’ll keep using my original Speed Lite 20 because it’s the perfect size, has no superfluous features, is very ... MoreI was about to buy a second SpeedLite 20 since my original one has served me so well for the past 4 years, but Deuter has eliminated some of the features that made the previous version so durable and useful. I’ll look elsewhere for a replacement when the time comes. as someone who appreciates truly durable gear, the decline in quality almost across the board in outdoor gear is a big bummer. Charge more per product and keep quality high! This is better for consumers, better for the planet, and better for your business. Please don’t become another empty Brand, Deuter!

Wanted to love; chest straps = thumbs down
12 September 2024

I want to love this backpack- which I bought for shorter hikes. I used it on one hike & had to return it- the chest strap is poorly designed as it goes literally across my chest- both uncomfortable & not flattering. It’s not adjustable. Tried hiking without the strap buckled but then the pack is just on your bag; the strap lifts it off your back. Went one size up (23L)- the chest straps are fine on the bigger pack.
