DJI RONIN 4D 4 Axis Cinema Camera 6K Combo

The DJI Ronin 4D 4-Axis Cinema Camera 6K Combo is a innovative camera gimbal that combines high-quality imaging, stabilization, and focusing in one lightweight rig. This carbon fiber and aluminum/magnesium alloy rig features the Zenmuse X9-6K Camera Gimbal Combo, which includes Z-Axis camera stabilization and 3-Axis gimbal stabilization. The camera supports ProRes 422 HQ video up to 6K60 and is equipped with a 5.5-inch 1000 cd/m touchscreen display. The rig also includes a LiDAR range finder/focus module, TB50 intelligent battery, and a selection of modular components such as left and right control handgrips, a top handle, and a baseplate. The Z-axis stabilization reduces unwanted vertical camera movement, especially during dollying moves. The tilt stabilization uses dual, symmetrical motors, and the pan and X (roll) axes have additional stabilization. The rig's combination design reduces setup time and is easy to transport in the included carrying case.

Like everyone else, I was skeptical at best, but I thought why not give it a try. Guess what? This thing is beyond phenomenal! No balancing whatsoever when using DJI lenses. The picture quality is fantastic. The tracking and autofocus are true game-changers. Just drag a box around someone's face and the camera does the rest.Every DP on set I've shown it to on set is ordering one. So glad this tool is in my arsenal. Worth every penny!

Let me start with saying, I was skeptical about buying this camera. I have been a long time fs7 user and have been debating an upgrade/new camera for a long time. I wanted something that was a big advancement in every way, and the 4D looked like the moment to finally pull the trigger. Obviously the big feature is the 4th axis, and I'll get to that, but I really wanted to start with the camera system itself. The image quality is insane. Super sharp, and great depth of field even with the DJI lens lineup. I was hesitant to see if it was going to producer better images then the fs7, but for me it does. The dynamic range is huge and the images are easy to color in post. Most of what I shoot goes to social media and I edit myself, and don't need that much data. The 6k files are super easy to work with in Premier which was a big must for me. I'm a manual focus person, but the auto is just so good here that I'm starting to convert. It also has so many options for focusing and lets you switch between them super fast which is great. The ergonomics over all are amazing, there are multiple options for controlling the camera depending on how you are holding it.Now the 4th axis, it is also, very impressive. If you calibrate everything right and use the system in the correct way, it is outrageously stable. Want to sprint backwards filming someone running in front of you? It looks like its on rails. I again, was skeptical of how well it would work. I hate gamble bounce and it's the main reason I've never bought one. I'm not saying its going to work in every scenario, and it has limits, but for basic walking or running shot it is shocking how well it works to keep the camera totally level.Negatives? It is heavy, for sure. I mostly shoot short form content, and am never really holding the camera for more then a minute without breaking so for me its not a massive problem. If I was doing a longer shoot and would be holding for extended periods of time, I would probably rent and easy rig or something similar. But for me, that kinda defeats the purpose of having this all in one small package if you have to use other gear to make it work. In the included case I can fit 3 batteries, 2 cards, and 2 lenses easily, so it really has everything I need for most of the shoots I am on.Is it for everyone? No. Does it do everything it claims to do really well? Yes. Honestly it feels like the future, and now picking up my fs7 feels like a fossil by comparison.

Honestly great
17 April 2022

I was skeptical for sure. Who's this really for I thought? The answer, anyone who enjoys great image quality with almost no setup.I bought it on a whim, but I'm super impressed. No balancing when using DJI lenses, awesome stabilization, and ProRes!So far I've been using this on shoots that require motion with no 1st AC. The focus system is next level. The best part is I really don't feel like I'm compromising, I truly feel like this camera deserves its own category because it's a unique and so far wonderful experience to use.I actually used it to film a piece that aired during a performance of the Grammy's and seeing it on the big screens it totally held up. Can't say enough positive things about it.

I Really Really Want To Love It But...

How can DJI sell this camera? It was like all the YouTubers on YouTube were paid to keep quiet. For $7K, it was the worst camera I have ever had. Sold my Komodo Stormtrooper to buy the 4D after all the hype. The first unit that I received, the rolling shutter was so bad, I couldn't believe it. Footage was so jittery, it was unusable. The LIDAR autofocus will not focus beyond 20 feet (rated for 10 meters) using the Sony E Mount and 24mm 1.4 GM. I tested the camera for a week trying to reduce judder before taking it on a big shoot. After 4 days of shooting the big project, I came home and found that any subject beyond 20+ feet was out of focus (and yes, they looked in focus on the monitor during filming and of course, I can only blame myself for relying on a camera ... MoreHow can DJI sell this camera? After 4 days of shooting the big project, I came home and found that any subject beyond 20+ feet was out of focus (and yes, they looked in focus on the monitor during filming and of course, I can only blame myself for relying on a camera that only cost $7K). While I was testing the camera, the autofocus worked perfectly because my kids were 10 feet or less so that was my mistake for not checking anything beyond that distance. Did I get a bad unit? I returned it and asked B&H for a replacement and the replacement unit came quickly but had all the same issues. I did not get two bad units, I know others in the 4D group that had the same issues. I know others that claimed to have good cameras showing me clips that had the same issue but they somehow did not see it. I did like that the tracking was good, the 4D 4th axis stabilization was superb, and I would have kept the camera if the jitter/judder/rolling shutter was not that that bad. Judder was the deal breaker for me. DJI's solution to the judder was to shoot at 2K resolution and switch to Super35 mode to reduce rolling shutter. However, nothing that I did resolved the judder/jittery footage (i.e. if you shoot at 48FPS and put that on a 24P timeline, the footage was so jittery unless you slow it down). I really wanted to love this camera as I am a solo shooter, and it saves so much time and extremely efficient. I turned it on and it was ready to go, never have to deal with balancing or carrying a ton of gears but I was so disappointed because I really wanted to love this camera so much...I guess it was never meant to be.

I can't believe I shot it!
2 February 2023

This camera has put me 10X closer to shooting footage that looks like it came straight from Hollywood. I'm always looking for equipment to increase my production value, and this Ronin 4D is the most significant improvement in production value that I have achieved in my life! The lidar focus and tracking are outstanding, but the 4th axis makes everything so smooth that you won't believe you shot it! I can literally shoot an entire movie with one long moving shot... by myself! This isn't just another piece of equipment, this is the one that closes the gap between Hollywood and Indies.

It is ok, but please do your research before buying
1 June 2022

I bought this with high hopes, but to be truthful I was let down from the start. B&H did a great job so nothing bad on them. The issues I have are by DJI. I watched the Vic Stah Milien video and read his quick start guide which is the only reason I gave it 4 stars. Prior to his information, it was a one-star and I was going to return it. So just do your homework before buying as it might not be what you think it is.

The camera allows for a wide array of sony e-mount and M mount lenses and will have you shooting like a pro nearly out of the box. While it is extremely user friendly, there are some seriously advanced technology. Lidar focusing is nearly flawless, yet easily overridden with a flick of the thumb and the "birdseye" lidar depth map. The magnesium alloy body is solid yet (relatively) light considering you're carting around a massive chunk of camera. The ONLY downsides with this camera are: You cannot shoot with a full-frame zoom lens without a counterbalance, significantly increasing the weight of this camera, and the camera is NOT compact. Actually, it is compact considering it's a cinema quality, 6k cinema camera with built in gimble, but you know what I mean. it's not going to win any awards for being discreet. But if you're not planning a glacier expedition, or packing it long distances, this camera will get you pro-grade shots out of the box that will only get better with practice. I've been very impressed with the results. As an aside, invest in the SSD upgrade. Worth the money. Also, get the bright Remote monitor, the transmiter, a few spare batteries and the e-mount adapter. The Sony lens options are MUCH better than the DJI options.I shoot with Sony Prime lenses... 14, 28, 55 and 85 mm..
