Crackin' Boots: Quality for a Lifetime

I was able to get a boot stretcher to widen them out, and they are lovely and fit well now. Before I wore them, I spent some time to get them properly prepped. I sprayed mink oil on them, then laid a few coats of the Balsam Shoe protector I got with the shoes. then it was time for Angelus show polish (yes, if you invest in good boots, you invest in good tools to clean and shine them). These boots are well made. I did not want the high platforms, as I swore off the motorcycle years ago. The stitching is a work of artistic care. The leather is smooth and supple, taking a polish and retaining it well. I love the hot cotton ball to loosen up the leather, the warm pasted carefully rubbed in with microfiber, and the cold cotton ball turning every surface to a gleaming resilience. And yes, the boots are crackin' too! Rick from Colorado

I know these boots are popular and alot of people I know rave about them, but for me it’s a no. They come up very large so being a size 11 I purchased a size down and still too big. The leather is also very hard, almost rigid and not comfortable at all. Although they have a very good sole I personally think the leather is poor and certainly doesn’t reflect the price tag. I don’t want a boot I have to suffer blisters for weeks to wear them in. I want a good quality winter boot out the box.I have however just purchased the comb tech utility boots and the difference is phenomenal. Perfect for, soft leather and much less common they the 1460s. My review of those will be a 5 star, but sadly not these ones.

Dr Marten's Air Wair boots are simply the best footwear there is. I always have two pairs on the go. They are so comfortable to wear you could almost feel there's nothing there at all. But they are also very supportive too - I stand around for long periods with my job and I find that Air Wair boots are perfect for my needs. I could never recommend Air Wair boots highly enough - I think that they are fantastic - practical, comfortable and stylish. What more could you possibly ask for. Thank you Dr Marten.

I have been wanting a pair for a long time. I cannot believe I waited until I was almost 40 to get a pair , but they are everything I expected and more. I have been wearing them every day to break them in and doing all the suggestions from others with balm right when I got them, I also got the insoles from Dr. Martins for added comfort these nailed it for added cushion and breaking in faster I believe. At night I take them off and put 50 oz water bottles in each to stretch them, it has been helping as well I am a size 13 so the stretching out is fine on them. In comparison to the other shoes I wear I buy all 13s they are true to fit, especially for a leather shoe as well. Thanks Dr. Martins for the high quality and commitment to excellence!

My Docs
6 December 2023

I was hesitant to order Doc Martens because I have read so many comments about blisters, etc during the “breaking in period”. I ordered a men’s size which is a bit wider and purchased a pair of padded socks. I have worn the boots several times and so far so good. The tongue and back of boots are pretty stiff. but an application of mink oil has helped. I have been wearing the boots for about 3-5 hrs at a time. The sole is fairly small thick and pushing gas pedal feels off and sometimes stub my toes. The only negative comment and really not negative is that the bottoms of my feet feel numb after a few hours but that has improved with each wear. Overall it’s a good looking boot, had a sturdy sole and I feel sure I will wear them for a long time.

Ouch!

Living in the far north of the uk, and remembering nostalgically the warm, dry, comfortable feet I had in my first pair of docs I had in the 90s, I bought a new pair of docs a week ago, waited patiently to mug the postman, they arrived! Weather was horrible so I excitedly put my left boot on, bliss! Perfect fit, so comfortable! Just as I remembered, a little tight across the top of my foot but okay. My right boot, ouch, instant pain across the top of my foot, okay they need to stretch, I had thick socks on, so I persevered, nope not getting any better, if anything worse each time I wore them. There is a little overlap on the seam that rolls over when my foot goes in creating a hard rolled ridge that presses into my foot, extremely painful, out comes the painkillers. I know docs are famously stiff until worn in, but this is a whole new level! I love my docs but I don’t remember this being a feature of my original boots and not in my polleys either, clearly quality control is not working! I am now going to resort to my leather skiver to try and remove the overlap.

I'd been wanting docs for a while and I chose these to be my first pair over the original style of 1460s because a, vegan; b, I prefer these gold accents; and c, I read a review that these were more waterproof due to the faux leather or something and I'm going to be traveling to a relatively rainy climate this fall and need shoes to serve that purpose. Anyway, I love these shoes, though I've not yet tested them in rainy weather to determine whether that claim is true. However, here are the impressions I have ascertained after about 1.5 months of having them:1. they do run true to size, in my opinion. I wear Converse quite a bit and tend to be a 6.5-7 in those; I ordered these in a 7 and while there is wiggle room in the toes and ankle area, it's no biggie for me. I wear Converse quite a bit and tend to be a 6.5-7 in those; I ordered these in a 7 and while there is wiggle room in the toes and ankle area, it's no biggie for me. I kind of like it better that way.2. They are extremely squeaky, especially if you've been wearing them all day. I'm not sure if this will get better as they're more broken in, but the people I live with find it very annoying and typically refuse to let me wear them in the house.3. Regarding the breaking-in process, it's not too bad. The first few times I wore them i did have to wear them every other day because I had actual bruises from the top of the shoes rubbing against my calves, but after a week or so, there was no issue.4. These are not shoes for people in a hurry. To put them on, I have to significantly loosen the laces all the way down and then tighten them all the way back up to tie them. This does take longer than it would take in other shoes because of the stiff material.Overall, I love them and wear them nearly every day. They definitely have a few limitations, but they're surprisingly comfortable to trek around in for a full day or more. Would recommend!

These vegan leather replacements have come a looong way
13 February 2024

I've had these Docs for a few weeks now, and I love them! I haven't owned any DMs in years, and when I went vegetarian and then vegan years ago, I resigned myself to the fate of maybe not being able to own any of the rad leather stuff I used to love. I was glad to find that DM and many other brands are hopping on it and offering vegan options. Years ago, the vegan options out there were plastic-y and uncomfortable at best, and, dare I say, junk, at worst. After wearing these daily and on many shifts bartending, these broke in nicely, and leave nothing to be desired compared to leather, imo. They run ever so slightly large -- I wear an 11 in most footwear, but got the 10 in these. A little tight with thick socks, but an 11 would have been miserably loose. If a 10.5 was offered, that would likely have been perfect. Another reviewer mentioned a squeak in the sole that they returned them over -- mine had that too, at first, but it went away after they broke in. Time will tell, but I anticipate that these will serve me well for a long time and just get better and more "distinguished." Glad to be traipsing around in 1460s again.Punk AF!

Very disappointed.
1 December 2023

Very disappointed. Boots Dr. Martens, for me it's not about cost, not about expensiveness, not about status. This is, first of all, about quality, about reliability, about safety, about an undeniable advantage over other brands of shoes. It's a pity, I waited a lot for my boots, when I received them I was so happy that I didn't notice right away, Dr.Martens, it's sad, but it's turning into a mass-market, the quality that was before, the reliability of the materials has gone into history. It's a pity to overpay for shoes that do not bear the label of the world-famous, reliable, high-quality brand "Dr. Martens” Very disappointed with this quality of work. they were simply cut on the finish.

Wish I'd bought them sooner
2 May 2024

I'd been mulling over purchasing a pair of docs for a while. Should I shouldn't I? The cost and the subsequent effort of breaking them in being the main barriers stopping me making a quicker purchase. I'm glad I bit the bullet! The quality shines through and they will easily justify the price tag and fit seemlessly into my wardrobe as I can wear them with pretty much anything. Yes, they can rub a bit on my achilles... but, they're new and nothing truly worthwhile comes without effort so I'm just donning a thicker pair of socks and gradually wearing them for longer periods / walking slightly further with them. The breaking in period has been better than I thought it would.Very pleased with the purchase.
