This is an aptly-titled, awe-inspiring piece of software. As someone very interested in game design, but with very little programming knowledge, this title immediately piqued my interest, and it doesn't disappoint. The suite of tools available combined with the user-friendly interface really does let you just run wild with your imagination and build pretty much anything you want. And there are some great tutorials to get you acclimated to the basics. Most of my time so far though has been spent playing other people's creations, which of course vary greatly in quality, but the gems are up there with some of the best indie games I've played, and have inspired some new ideas of my own that I hope to work into my very first creation. Let me start off by saying that I loved the LittleBigPlanet games, and to be honest Dreams nearly slipped under the radar for me even though it's by the same developers. But I finally got to play it and mess around in the creation system and I have to say it is definitely one for all you creative minds out there. There is a learning curve to the creation tools and while I haven't gotten all of them down yet there is literally endless potential to what you can create. It's all limited to your imagination (and the imagination of others). If you don't want to create your own you can play other peoples' creations. I have seen everything from Fallout 4 to Sonic the Hedgehog to even Avatar the Last Airbender on the list of creations that you can play. Even the game's story mode is a nice homage to art and creativity, being aptly named "Art's Dream". It's a nice campaign that was built using the creation tools in Dreams itself, so what you play in the campaign is fair game for you to create as well. Long story short, this game lets you experience the wonderful world of art, music and all things that inspire us to create. Dreams is a gem for anyone who appreciates the basic human knack for making things.

I bought it. Played the (just ok, 70 min) single player campaign. Then spent over 10 hours playing one broken user creation (facilitated illegally by Sony and/or Media Molecule's servers) after another with graphics that are truly SUB Playstation 3. And as I played I said at least 25 times, "Trademark violation". Also I was baffled this highly mediocre game was getting great reviews (thank you Gamestop for giving me $30 in trade 2nd week). DREAMS is not that great. The idea is interesting, but, the interface to create these graphics/game play is weak. Dreams is less a "game" and more a platform for creativity. It is Media Molecule taking the spirit of Little Big Planet to the next level, but not in a small leap but in bounds. If LBP gave people a galaxy of possibilities for design and creativity, Dreams gives them the universe. There's already a nearly bottomless selection of experiences to play through, some brilliant and many forgettable, but the pure joy comes from taking part in what others have created. There's a charm in that which not everyone will appreciate. Also, if you are not planning on ever delving into the creative tools yourself, you will not get to enjoy Dreams to its fullest potential and it may feel like half an experience for you. However, I do feel like a lot of people who go in not intending to be creative will be inspired by what they play from others and will decide to take the plunge themselves. This obviously would not appeal to all, and therefore that is why I feel this game is truly a masterpiece and a revolution of sorts in terms of the power put in gamers' hands. I also like the price being $40. Nevertheless, I highly recommend it for what potential it has. You never know when that spark of creativity might arrive, and Dreams will give you the tools to do something meaningful with it.
Media Molecule has given us tastes of using your own imagination before in the LittleBigPlanet series, but this is on a whole new level. After tutorials, some patience, and some time, you'll be creating art, music, games... or just experiencing and playing the hundreds of users' creations- whether photorealistic food, 3D modeled artwork of Deadpool in action, taking a stroll through Wonder Wharf from Bob's Burgers, or playing recreated games or their own interesting games, there's never a shortage of things to do in Dreams. Making it your own experience IS the fun. If you decide creation isn't for you, then just enjoy the THOUSANDS of games others have created. There's no right or wrong way to experience Dreams, while giving you more to do than your wildest dreams. ... MoreMedia Molecule has given us tastes of using your own imagination before in the LittleBigPlanet series, but this is on a whole new level. A must-own.
We've been waiting for this game forever. Had the digital pre-release and bought this copy to have on a different system/account. Made by the people that brought us Little Big Planet, this game takes the creation of games to an entirely new level. That's both awesome and intimidating as hell. There's so much to unpack about how to do things with this game which is really more of a platform than a game. To be perfectly honest, we have more fun playing the crazy games other people make than creating ourselves just because the really cool stuff takes a lot of time and a lot of effort. Wonderful concept and given what it offers, I can't see how they could have done any better with the interface when they did but still, making an awesome looking complex, deep game with ... MoreWe've been waiting for this game forever. Wonderful concept and given what it offers, I can't see how they could have done any better with the interface when they did but still, making an awesome looking complex, deep game with immersive sound, graphics and game play is an art and a skill. While Dreams makes it easier than ever before, you still have to put the work in to get something good out of it. Understand that going in and I'm sure you'll have a blast creating. If not, there is still plenty to do in "Dream Surfing" mode playing other peoples creations.
Dreams is really a hard game to review, because your enjoyment will largely depend on what you want to do with it. If you’re looking just to play games, you’ll likely be initially impressed with the variety of genres that are available. However, like all user generated content games, the quality of these games will vary greatly, so you’ll probably have to play through some garbage to get to the good stuff. The included story made by the developers is great, but only lasts 2-3 hours. As a creation tool though, Dreams offers you the most comprehensive suite of creation tools ever created in a regular video game. You can sculpt, paint art, make music, animations, and of course games. So overall, I would recommend Dreams to you right now in early 2020 if you enjoy creating digital art, or you enjoy playing/testing other people’s creations. If that doesn’t sound interesting to you, I would wait a while to see where the community takes the game in the coming months and years. *PS PLUS is not currently required to share/play people’s creations online. However, online multiplayer is not a thing yet, so that may become a requirement if it gets added.
This is a sandbox for creative types. You can make any number of wild and crazy game with this. It's mind-boggling the amount of content and game-making mechanics hidden under the hood. As I don't have the time to actually do all the tutorials for game-making, I instead just go online and try out the endless mass of games that other people have made. Many are simple, many are silly, but some are jaw-dropping! If you get this, please check out the game called slideout 3019. The music, sound effects, and graphics are CRAZY-GOOD! I thought this was a game for making cutesy little romps...But NO, this game hides a powerhouse of potential. This is a fantastic, ambitious program that I really enjoyed using. It really stimulates creativity and I was gobsmacked about how much you can do and in the game's "Dreamiverse" community. I have a lot of fun with it, especially mixing music and making rudimentary games. It will make you realize just how much work goes into programming games - the logic alone can occupy you for days. I am sad to report though that it is still a very complicated program and requires a lot of hard work to get desired results. The tutorials are fantastic but you have to spend a long time fine tuning what you are making so it will look and feel right...a lot of quality control and bug testing, etc. Most of it was beyond the scope of my patience and time. I wish it was selling better because it is a game-changer a la Minecraft...I just think that its learning curve is pretty steep.
When it comes to success, Dreams should be the next Minecraft. Like that game, its biggest strength is endless creativity. But unlike that game, you don't need to be a creative thinker to get the most out of the game. Instead you can play thousands of experiences that are created by others, all from a wide variety of genres. The negative reviews complained about the complexity of creating something (which should be expected when it includes essentially an entire video game development software suite and you can literally create ANYTHING), but neglected to admit they may have been better suited to just enjoy the experiences created by other people. Like any artform, the skills necessary to create interactive experiences requires dedication, it is an endeavor that takes far more time to get good at than people might expect. If you find out you don't have the patience, no worries, you have an infinite amount of content to experience as a player. One of the best things about Dreams is what's called Dream Surfing. You pick tags of the kind of things you are interested in seeing, click a button, and are instantly transported to an experience. If you don't particularly care for what you are seeing from one experience, just pause and click the next button. Each experience loads in about 1-2 seconds, so you can quickly experience a wide variety of creations. Like many fans of the company who made LittleBigPlanet and Tearaway, I bought the game digitally through early access. I hate to see that the game is missing out on hundreds of five star reviews because of this, which may eventually impact its sales for the physical version. Media Molecule had worked on this game for 6 years and incredibly generous with the $40 original price. This game is worth so much more than that, you won't regret buying something that has infinite content.
