First, I am a hard core fan of Dune, the novel. I have been waiting with anticipation for the movie's release. Not surprisingly, the special effects were superior. But one stood out in particular- those for the ornithopter. Neither the 1984 movie nor the Sci-Fi channel adaptation showed them the way Frank Herbert envisioned them. This movie does. The character portrayals were mostly good. Four stand out in particular: Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho, Dave Bautista as Beast Rabban, Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck and Javier Bardeem as Stilgar. I can only give an ok for Baron Harkonnen. Ian McNiece in the Sci-Fi channel adaptation was superior as the Baron. I'm sorry, you just don't change a story like Dune. No matter what you say, Fremen society is patriarchal in nature. Dr. Kynes as a woman would have a harder time getting the Fremen to embrace this vision to transform Arrakis.Lastly, there was a great deal of attention to include the little things (such as references to the Old Duke). All in all, this movie is a must-see.

When you have a 4k 85 inch television and a PS5 with the capacity for playing 4kUHD discs...You invest in hard copies!!! The difference is palpable and noticeable when comparing streamed 4K content versus the disc. When I saw this disc had gone on sale for just $10, it was destined to be mine.It was my wife's first time watching the movie at all, and for me the difference between watching it in this way compared to previously when we streamed it on the 65-in television was a far superior experience! We loved it! Shipping was fast and easy from Best Buy, in fact it took significantly less time than they originally estimated.Highly recommend.

I am a huge Dune fan and have read all of the books from the original storyline. I also own the other 2 Dune movies. Doesn't live up to the hype. Movie is well done as a movie, it does explain the background of the story better than the 1984 movie, but also skips a lot of information that is key to the story line. For instance, the Shadot Mapes role was for more than what was shown, the scene where Leto's father saves the harvester workers over the spice. Liet made a comment about Letos father saving the people versus the harvester, which later played a main role in the Fremen trusting the Atreides.

This movie is fantastic. From the soundtrack, to the picture, or the story; it holds up great in the sci-fi movie catalog. It's unfortunate that we couldn't get a timely back-to-back filming schedule due to executive decisions to withhold filming part 2 to see how well part 1 would do.I know the movie was well received and should be able to keep hype up, but I think if they just kept the faith and filmed on-time as the director wanted; it could help make the series shine even more. It's also sad to not see IMAX format scenes included, but perhaps that will be released in a director's cut edition. All other aspects of the film (sound, picture) are very well done. The regular copy was flawless otherwise. Just wish the steelbook wasn't plagued by issues (damages, ... MoreThis movie is fantastic. This film and adaptation of the Frank Herbert classic which itself is far ahead of it's time is truly epic and sweeping in every way as it certainly deserves. Including and in no way limited to the liberties taken that pervades this current society zeitgeist to implement flagrant and aggressive quotas in so much as altering specific indications and in essence rewriting history artistically and politically, misappropriation in fiction and non alike. Connoesseur's and devout nerds shall recognize right away. Otherwise this reviewer has no complaints. Villanueva's rendition including metaphorically and pun or not, heavyweight, heavy hitting actors and music composer included. It is grand in every way and in spirit and style true. It is also a much overdue successor to David Lynch's masterpiece which nearly 40 years ago in and of itself was greatly under appreciated and like the book, certainly ahead of it's time and highly applicable if not a bit misunderstood and under comprehended. Buy and watch this now on huge screen, ultra high def, high frame rate, thumping surround sound. Must have for deployment of justice! 11 out of 10 stars!
This movie isnt anything new if you've seen the 1984 version of Dune. Repackaged with better special effects and actors that are better fits for the characters that they are portraying. This movie really shines in its visuals and soundtrack. If you have a Dolby Atmos system, this movie will make you happy. The sound engineer used the height channels for more than music and the occasional grunt or explosions. You actually hear sand blowing and bouncing off of objects amongst other things. Anytime someone uses "The Voice" it shakes the house subterranean violence. The director really wanted you to feel the otherworldly effects and power of it.This is a worthy purchase to add to any collection, especially for those with Atmos systems and multiple subwoofers. This movie is simply brilliant. Every actor gives great performances and the direction is superb. The cinematography is stunning and the special effect being a mix of practical and digital really work well to immerse us into this world. For me though, the best part of owning this disc is the sound. The Atmos mix is top notch, completely immersive, thunderous while still remaining delicate and nuanced and dynamic, and the soundtrack is on another level and wholly fits within the context of the film. The one thing I will ding this movie for, and it was an issue in the excellent Dolby Theater I saw it in originally and also plagues this disc is that some of the dialogue, especially Lady Jessica, is mixed to low in the mix. They are whispered lines that have a ton of purpose. They are not throwaway lines and really must be heard, but it is difficult to make them out in parts. I truly think this is going to be my go-to disc to show of my home theater for a long time to come.
This is a pretty good adaptation of the beginning of the Dune books. I’ve read the books, so that helps me keep track of who is who and what’s going on. This film is the first of a trilogy or more. I do not know this for sure. I have not researched it, but no way could they conclude the story with only one more film. Technically, the movie was pretty good - the obligatory special effects and all. My only concern was that some scenes were dark - black really - but that may be on me. I just purchased a 4K tv and player and this was the first film I watched on the new system and I had not yet tweaked the picture settings. I will watch it again soon to see if the tweaking helps. Otherwise, a notable film to add to your collection.
This (2021) version of "Dune" is so disappointing it almost sucks! Of course, as expected from just any high budget production these days, effects and technical aspects are top notch, but it does not help because acting and directing are below decent level. No surprise almost all awards the movie received are for technical achievements (sound, visual effects, production design, cinematography, music, editing etc.) In only few brief moments, one can feel any genuine emotion from humans on screen. Actors feel disengaged, almost bored and tired. I could barely watch the whole movie. The 1984 version of the "Dune" is light years ahead of 2021 version despite obvious technical limitations of the old era, and probably most fans will agree that the book remains by far the ... MoreThis (2021) version of "Dune" is so disappointing it almost sucks! The movie does not offer much more than that.
I have not read the book yet, but I'll say it's really interesting when a movie like this feels as cohesive and legible as this one does after years of people claiming how "unfilmable" a book is. I think that makes this movie just a little more impressive. This isn't my favorite Denis Villeneuve directed movie, but I enjoy it quite a bit.My only real gripe is that this book, over the decades, has inspired such psychedelic & colorful art and imagery and even music, but that influence isn't really felt in this movie until... the closing credits, basically. All this to say, it's a little drab even though wonderfully photographed. Yes it does take place primarily on a dessert planet, but there's also a real lack of vibrancy in the other cultures and environments and ... MoreI have not read the book yet, but I'll say it's really interesting when a movie like this feels as cohesive and legible as this one does after years of people claiming how "unfilmable" a book is.
